Redundant remake
20 February 2023
This remake of Preston Sturges' "Unfaithfully Yours" (1984) is mostly uninspired, apart maybe from one bit: the "violin duel". It is extremely laborious: it has the pacing and the length of a "serious" movie, but with an elementary farcical "Idiot Plot"; the whole movie hinges on a stupid misunderstanding that could be resolved in ten seconds if Dudley Moore's character could behave like an adult for that long. The original film had this problem as well, but was redeemed by a truly hilarious late sequence where reality clashes with the carefully devised plans in the conductor's fantasies; here those scenes are midly amusing at best. Positives: Nastassja Kinski sparkles and the location filming around N. Y. C. Is pleasing. ** out of 4.
