Why?

There must be a reason for Emma Thompson to play Robert Carlyle's mother, even if she's a mere two years older than him, but I just don't get it. She does not look much older than her age and he does not look younger, therefore they make for a weird pair and not in the least believable as mother and son. Apart from the bizarre and inexplicable casting, the movie just grated on my nerves.

It's the story of a most unappealing character doing a bunch of stupid things in a stupid way in a dreary location. I guess it's supposed to be funny, in a sort of Tarantino's way of exaggerating events, but it isn't in the least. It doesn't work as a thriller either, so I am not sure who was the target for this mess.
