The title actually refers to a bull rather than pioneer stock in this rollicking Universal potboiler derivatively scored by 'Johnny' (as he then was) Williams and prettily photographed in Technicolor by veteran cameraman William Clothier - albeit in frequently obvious studio sets - that proves director Andrew MacLaglan is a chip off the old block, filling the screen with non-stop rowdyism and fisticuffs in the able hands of old reliables Jack Elam, Harry Carey Jr and Ben Johnson.

Maureen O'Hara and Juliet Mills make a comely pair of wenches in Eastern riding gear, the former - as usual wearing green - plays a comely widow encroaching on male territory personified by Jimmy Stewart in a role requiring a lot less introspection than usual and Brian Keith (assuming that it really is him beneath all those whiskers and a wild Scottish burr).
