Black Mirror: Beyond the Sea (2023)
Season 6, Episode 3

Terrible Writing

Yikes! The episode is so badly written, it's hard to understand that anyone would want to produce it as is. I'm not sure what they were thinking but the episode starts off so strong and ends up in the realm of absolutely obtuse.

I wish I could say it's very well acted, but the motivations for the three main characters are so vague, you have to wonder why the actors never asked themselves the simple question of "Why would I do this?"

The real tragedy though is the garbage plot-line, and the fact that that they throw the central tragedy right under the bus as soon as it happens.

There was very little research into space flight as well. It's supposed to be a 'retro-tech' theme, but even with the fastest means of communication currently known to man, there would always be a delay between signal and receiver. Which makes the whole thing kind of... dumb.

Also the idea that there would be only 2 people on an interstellar flight is utter ridiculous (all flights since the Apollo missions have had 3 minimum, engineer, pilot, and medical).

I can't bear to watch this again and both my wife and I were so frustrated with the bad character choices the actors chose and the director allowed, that it made us verbally yell at the screen "Why? It makes no sense!"

It's highly predictable 2/3rds of the way through, but the inciting incident of this episode was thrown under the bus. It would have been far more interesting to see a man dealing with absolute loss while trapped a million miles away than this stupid garbage.

Overrated to a high degree.
