Louie: New Jersey/Airport (2011)
Season 2, Episode 13
9/10

A lot of this show has found a perfect way of blending comedy with drama, but for the finale we get served up a straight tragedy, with humorous elements. It's probably the only real way that this season could have ended; looking back at Louie's journey throughout the entire thing, it really seems to have been about him finding some kind of love in his life outside of work. With this episode, both segments reflect that very well, although they do it in different ways. And it may have been the perfect, bittersweet note to end this show on, which is both sad and sweet.

In many ways, the finale turns around Louie's luck and offers him an easy solution to his loneliness problem. He literally gets offered the chance to spend the night with a woman, which would make up for a lot of misery that he has been going through for the entire season. But, because Louie can't do anything simple - and because of another little mishap along the way, including the woman's personal life - Louie is once again put in his place and has to go home in shame, calling up one of the show's greatest guest stars so far to come and pick him up. And as if that wasn't enough, the second segment, which sees Pamola leave for Paris, just serves a huge wake-up call to Louie, that the show then takes away immediately and leaves the entire show on a happy note for him. And to be honest, can we blame him? He has gone through some of the worst moments of his life during this season, so to give him a little bit of hope at the end is a perfect sendoff for this round. Although we as the audience know that there's nothing waiting for him in the immediate future with Pamela, there's something else out there for him, and that hope will keep him going long enough to find that. "Louie" keeps changing the game in a good way, and if this next season goes on with the same pace and good humor as this, it's going to be another classic.

"New Jersey/Airport" is the perfect conclusion to Louie's journey, showing that while what he's looking for may not be there yet, it's coming soon. It ends the season on a bittersweet note for us, but gives Louie that happy ending that he has been craving for so long, and after all this, why not?
