This is not a complete review. I simply wanted to correct a single small plot point that others totally missed.
In a number of scenes we see Samantha interacting with her mother, whom she lives with. It is obvious that there is something wrong with the mother. Nothing nefarious, but mom is ill.
Another reviewer stated that Samantha "tried to get her mother out of the addicted slump she was in, which we never really see how that plays out." This statement is incorrect.
Samantha's mother is obviously severely depressed. She is not addicted to anything. A common misconception is that all depressed people are suicidal. This is absolutely not true. Samantha's mom just can't get past the depression and do anything with her life. In one scene Samantha comes into the apartment and finds her mother sitting on the floor sobbing. When asked what's wrong the mother replies that they are out of milk.
After Samantha enters her Mom's thoughts, we see the mom dressed in a business suit and getting into her car. If you are not paying attention you may not understand what happened. But in the end it is good news.
In a scene near the end of the movie we see a young woman, using crutches, leaving a medical clinic. As she passes the reception desk we can hear another woman talking. The young woman briefly looks at that woman. It is Samantha's Mom. So we might surmise that Samantha gave her mother a gentle mental nudge, to clean herself up, get dressed in business attire and go apply for a job. This is truly the one really good thing that happens in this whole movie. Enjoy.
