Golda is an extraordinary and chilling story about the former Prime Minister of Israel - Golda Meir. The story takes place during the most challenging period of her term of office, as of the most challenging war in Israel's history - The Yom Kippur War.
The film depicts the harsh terms and high stakes throughout the war, the many decisions that Golda had to take and the atmosphere of fear and chaos. Many of us probably cannot realize how this war was so impactful without experiencing it ourselves. Yet the movie does give this experience of high stakes in a genuine way.
First off, Guy Nattiv did a fantastic work along with writer Nicholas Martin. Both have created and frighting atmosphere and a feeling of Armageddon. The scene where Secretary of Defense Moshe Dayan (Rami Heuberger) is on the helicopter observing the battle scenes in the Northern front at night. With the explosions and firing is a chilling scene that will not get out of my head for a while.
Helen Mirren is just fantastic, a wonderful actress and one of a kind. Her portrayal was genuine and superb. The way she navigates the emotions in her head and evokes confidence is really impressive. She is a natural leader.
I should point out that the editing and sound departments were superb, fantastic work with showcasing the dark tone the movie has, from the general meetings up to the thoughts that are running in Golda's head.
The only issue I have with the movie is the fact that this is half an Israeli production, so why not have the actors who speak Hebrew speak it? This is a long-time problem in Hollywood where the big companies would take a real story from anywhere in the world and translate in English the whole dialogue. It just feels weird to see real life history figures speak English even though they were not native speakers.
Overall, I believe this was a chilling yet impactful movie, that was made with much effort and admiration to the historic figure.
