The Spell (1977 TV Movie)

Carrie ...but Wealthy and Voluptuous!
8 September 2023
A rich girl has a very moderate weight problem but since she's a rich girl living in the suburbs of San Francisco all of the girls at her school weigh 98 pounds because it's also 1977 and anorexia is "in." Her own mother - a rather narcissistic woman though attractively 40 - smokes to stay slim and even ceremoniously crushes a cigarette into a bowl of broth at one point.

In fact what makes this film bearable is how unbearable the family is. These people are so gross and white and upper middle class you want to watch curvy RIta crush their stupid heads. Her father, first of all, emotionally abuses her and gaslights his 15 year old daughter within the first 20 minutes of the film. Additionally, he's a money-obsessed distant husband and he seems to favor his 13 year old daughter who he deems prettier (Helen Hunt, looking all of 11 years old) which is creepy AF considering how mean he is to Rita and how he pushes his wife, their mother, away.

That's just the beginning! This is definitely a D-movie and is only for die hard 70s people who late night fall asleep to old Aaron Spelling dramas.
