I stumbled upon this 1998-1999 TV series as part of sitting through a "The Crow" movie marathon here in 2023. I remember seeing it sometime back in the stores back in the 2000s, but never actually got around to watching it. And seeing that it had Mark Dacascos on the cast list definitely was a convincing argument to sit down and watch it.
As much as I enjoyed the original "The Crow" movie that starred Brandon Lee, then I have to say that this 1998-1999 TV series was just a slap to the face. Couldn't they have come up with a new character, a new storyline and left Eric Draven for the portrayal done by Brandon Lee?
I was in no means or ways interesting in a re-interpretation of the original movie from 1994, which was what "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" turned out to be. And it was just cringeworthy to sit there and watch the same storyline being told, but with added material and such. It just felt utterly unnecessary for this series to have been made, and I have to say that it felt like a mockery of the 1994 movie and of Brandon Lee's legacy.
Sure, the acting performances in "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" were good, and there are some good talents on the cast list. But it was just distasteful to sit through this and watch everything anew and watch the beloved characters from the 1994 movie being reinvented and presented in a new light throughout this series. Mark Dacascos certainly was well-cast for the series, but it was just difficult to accept him taking over on the iconic performance left by Brandon Lee.
"The Crow: Stairway to Heaven" is something I have delved into once here in 2023, and it will forever be shelved and forgotten. I have to say that I was really, really disappointed in what this series turned out to be. Especially since they had so much untapped potential for new storytelling, new characters, etc., but instead they cashed in on the 1994 movie and made a mockery of it.
