By the time the strains of my favourite of all U2 songs begins, ushering in the final minutes of the one hundred and eighty-seventh visit to Tree Hill, North Carolina, it was abundantly clear that this was a series-ender for the ages.
(Side note: I don't know what it cost the producers to get U2's epic in there, but it was worth every single cent).
A reunion for Tric's tenth anniversary conjures plenty of memories for Nathan, Haley, Brooke and the others - and, of course, for those who have watched One Tree Hill for nine memorable seasons - and the final minutes in the gym at Tree Hill High, where it really all began, are the pay-off every longtime, hardcore OTH fan wanted and hoped for. Ravens hoops in the gym, one of the real focal points of the series, offering certainty in the now and glimpses of the future.
Mark Schwan, for all his documented faults (of which there are many), crafted a brilliant farewell to be proud of.
There is, indeed only one Tree Hill.
