Sister Death (2023)
4/10
Nun too great.

Warning: Spoilers
An undeniably visually stylish film, Sister Death is, disappointingly, a rather unremarkable ghost story, one that employs a very slow burn approach that, unfortunately, doesn't have a strong enough payoff to make the wait worthwhile.

Ten years after her visions of the Virgin Mary, novice nun Sister Narcisa (Aria Bedmar) joins a Catholic school as a teacher where she witnesses strange occurrences and discovers that the other nuns are harbouring a terrible secret.

To sum up the plot in fewer words: an angry spirit takes revenge. That's all there really is to this slow Spanish spook tale - no clever twists or unique developments, just a very gradual and predictable reveal of what happened in the past to explain what is happening in the present. The cinematography is great, and the acting is fine, but the whole thing is just too derivative and drearily paced to make for a wholly effective horror.

4.5/10, rounded down to 4 for the death of Rosa, which I don't understand: why would the ghost kill an innocent child?
