Review of Nyad

Nyad (2023)
4/10
I was very hopeful and excited, but this was bad, very bad.

This was by far one of the worst movies I've ever seen on Netflix. Netflix, come on, you can do better. I honestly don't even know which component to pick a part, or what exactly contributed to the downfall of this movie. First of all, I think the premise is pretty interesting, as I remember this woman swimming back in the 70s. Of all the people, or of all the strong, lesbian women, I don't know if I would've chosen her as someone to whom to aspire. I don't think most people will know who she is, but they will now, so that is a good thing, and I do like to highlight women doing amazing things in our culture, that are probably overlooked by the main stream media, so I can kind of see it. But come on, were you really trying to highlight Nyad, or were you trying to just make a woke statement? Do we need more movies about women doing spectacular things? Yes. Do we need more movies about gay characters? Sure, why not. But I felt like I was being knocked over the head with a woke theme stick.

The cinematography was pretty good, and I did like the look back scenes of her into childhood, and all of the horrific things that happened to her, that probably created the person she was, so determined, even in spite of serious adversities.

Oh, the music, I've always found my music is a terribly important component to any movie. The soundtrack is critical in invoking emotions from the viewer. The music in this was so awful. I think they picked three top songs from that era and just threw it in there. It just didn't fit, so whoever chose the music did not do a good job. Are they good songs? Yes. But they didn't fit with this movie.

I also think the writing could have been better. It is so poorly written. I think it would've been better to highlight how and why she wanted to compete on such a level versus showing her flailing away in the water the whole time. It just didn't feel right.

Now here comes the kicker. The acting was so god awful. I actually thought at one point I was just being punked. Annette Bening and Jodie foster perhaps contributed to the downfall of this movie. I've never seen such a bad acting in my life. I even played a little bit of it for a friend and they just started laughing. I really honestly think that if Netflix started to choose, fresher faces, not meaning in age, but not recycled actors over decades and decades, it may have made it with a better script. But this acting felt like a 1980s sitcom. And, I love Annette Bening. Jodie Foster, meh. She's never been that good. But I have loved Annette Bening for so long, so I'm very sad that she chose this role.

I have noticed, however, over the past few years at the quality of what Hollywood puts out is so poor. The streaming channels just turn out crap after crap after crap. But it's not all crap, half of it is brilliant, but this was a stinker.

I watched all of it just to sit here in amazement at how bad it was, and to see if there was any glimmer of hope as the movie progressed, but no, there was nothing redeeming about this.

Save yourself some time and choose something else. Netflix you can do better. Jody and Annette, you can do better.
