Deliver Us (2023)
9/10
One Of- If Not- The Best Religious Thrillers In Recent History.
26 November 2023
Deliver Us is not only one of the best religious thrillers of the modern era...it's one of the best horror films of 2023.

It tells the story of a Russian nun, who becomes miraculously pregnant with twins- one good, and one evil- by what she claims to be immaculate conception.

Which harkens back to an ancient Zoroastrian prophecy, about the return of the Messiah...and the Anti-Christ.

Which leads her to request the help of an American priest, who is thought have performed a miracle of his own, after he freed a woman suffering from severe mental illness from the demons that were attacking her.

He is a bit of a doubting Thomas.

But, when faced with a series of events that seem to fulfill multiple prophecies, by various doomsday seers...he must come to grips with the role he is meant to play in the whole ordeal.

Which means he is to be the father of these two children...and the partner of their mother.

Making them somewhat akin to Mary and Joseph.

Though...if you pay attention to the underlying message of the film.

They are actually fashioned as Jesus and Mary Magdalene...passing down the Holy Grail, in the form of the bloodline (like is argued in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail).

Which is what makes this film so great.

On top of it's beautiful cinematography.

And the incredible performances put on by the entire cast.

Particularly Lee Roy Kunz and Maria Vera Ratti, in the starring roles.

As they are forced to endure, not only, tests of faith...but their own mental breakdowns, as well.

As they must fight to survive the attempts of a dark gnostic cult to wipe them out, and the mental games being played by the Anti-Christ child...as he tries to get them to kill his Messiah brother.

It has everything a great horror film should have...action, intrigue, nuance, and a fair amount of gore.

So, I'm not sure what the haters of this film are on about.

Because it seems to have a polar effect on people.

Where you either love or hate it.

That being said, however...there is nothing not to love about this film.

It goes full tilt from the very beginning, right through the end...and doesn't let up on the pedal for one moment.

What a truly incredible film.

That is as highly entertaining as it is stunningly shot.

It definitely ranks at the top of the list of horror films this year, alongside El Conde, Infinity Pool, and Evil Dead: Rise.

So don't pay heed to the haters and let this one pass you by.
