Apocalypto (2006)

Apocalypto is a survival film directed by Mel Gibson, who have made the brilliant Braveheart. This film though is impressive in visuals but lacks a rigid characterization. It has the power to captivate the minds of viewers through its spellbound scenes ; like those of tribal lifestyles, the natural setting, the war scenes, the sacrificial scenes, the survival strategies and the thrill involving throughout the plot etc. But it is really difficult to connect with those technical aspects in a movie for long time. You need some real base upon which one could relate well to in life. In such aspects the film lacks the substance. There is a storyline involved but is shadowed by Gibson's technical expertise. The narration sometimes gets draggy without much content to sit through, one may lose interest in it. I saw it once and could see it again only a few scenes, not the whole film.

The acting is nothing much important in the film, it is heavily neglected, emphasizing upon the presentation of the film. It succeeded in it's intention too. The film is still remembered for its precise visual details regarding the forest and the survival strategy, also notable for its gory details. The gore themes are selected for depiction, perhaps to give a deeper feeling of Wild. But that's not brilliant narration. It implies expert cinematography.

Summing up , I feel it's an average historical action film with survival themes. It will definitely entertain you the first time but not sure about the 2nd watch. A 6/10. On a scale of 100 it would be 64.
