Review of 88

88 (II) (2015)
8/10
Riveting, Stylish Thriller

I am astounded this film has such a low score on imdb.

Being a fan of Katharine Isabelle's work in thriller and horror movies (American Mary, Ginger Snaps, Victims, The Green Sea) I finally found a copy of 88 and I was not disappointed.

This is a stylish and absorbing thriller. The production values are excellent from the sultry lighting to the cinematography to the frenetic editing which mirrors the protagonist's mental breakdown.

Because the main character, played by Katharine Isabelle, is suffering from amnesia and a psychotic break, we get to see her inhabit both an eerily cold but ferocious vigilante as well as a charmingly vulnerable woman thrust into a dark scenario she doesn't deserve; Katharine handles both sides of that persona splendidly. The movie starts in medias res and bounces around among different points in the story. Sometimes I find this type of narrative confusing, even draining, but here it added to the suspense of what precisely happened to set off this disastrous set of consequences.

Christopher Lloyd delivers as an antagonist and his chemistry with Katharine is gritty and believable.

The crescendo into the final revelation of the story, what actually happened, was a very fulfilling pay off to everything that came before, basically it stuck the landing, imho.

Highly recommended if you enjoy a good thriller, an intriguing mystery, visceral action and a compelling performance.
