Celebrity Deathmatch (1998–2007)

Rich and Famous Mashup
21 February 2024
This is one of my favorite animated shows of all time. I was a teen from the 90's and I still watched "MTV" (when it was still good that is) but also, I was looking and watching anime and adult animation. As I was a teen, I had access to seeing the mature side of the animation genre which fascinated me because I was seeing how it can be more and take the next step with itself and this is one of the shows that prove it can.

The concept of this show is yeah, all kinds of ridiculous which is what makes it even more brilliant, and you can say predates "Robot Chicken" and others that go that extra mile in animated parody; though could also say the "Super Smash Bros" video games which has a lot of famous characters in a mashup. The show pretty much plays out like one big "MAD Magazine" cartoon as it parodies celebrities but also WWE wrestling and the "Mortal Kombat" franchise. All those things have been put into the blender and as you guessed it made one hell of a smoothie.

I really love Claymation which is something you honestly don't see much of these days and really makes me long for more. Reminds me of the work of Will Vinton as the designs, movements and the practicality are all top notches. But what I love are the gore effects, for gore hounds this show is worth sniffing out as it really goes all the way with it not holding back. I'll admit I was really surprised by this, describing what happens wouldn't do it justice and it would be a spoiler as part of the joy of this show is seeing it all for yourself to believe it.

The voice acting is top notch from the people that imitate and impersonate the celebrities, even though it would have been cool and even more funny is some of them did their own voices for the characters but oh well. However, it's the commentators and referee who in a way are the ones that really help drive the show. Comediators Johnny Gomez and Nick Dimond are probably another one of my favorite animated comic duos that I think are a little underrated. Both bounce off each other well and really have good voices that sound like they could be real sports commentator professionals. What makes them effective is how straight both play it, despite how much chaos goes on in the ring they both act as though it's another sports game day which makes sense as this violent sport is a regular norm.

Even like the referee Mills Lane, he's got a good voice too as he was an actual referee; it just funny how straight he plays it out where he states out certain odd rules before he has both contenders fight. And there's Stone Cold Steve Austin whom is voiced by the actual wrestler, he's in a few episodes and it's just funny how he plays that persona that we usually see from him but slightly exaggerated.

And of course, the other things that drive the show are the verbal humor, the dialog in the show is just hilarious. There are just so many memorable lines and puns that are dished out faster than the celebrities deliver the punches, kicks, and finishing blows. Some of them say some of the most ridiculous and outlandish things, but also in their dialog it's a parody and satire on the celebrity subculture and how crazy it can truly be. The action is great as we see the celebrities are just fighting the fight but what makes those fights stand out is how they're all playing all kinds of dirty. As they are breaking bones, tearing out limbs, using any to all kinds of bashing weapons, while dishing out the anger. The show was sort of a game show much like with the animated show "Wacky Races" (show I reviewed), as you couldn't help but wanted to place beats on who was going to win.

It would be awesome if there was a revival to this show (if it's done right and in good hands that is) as there are so many more possibilities to play with considering now. Like you can have an episode where's it's comic book movie fight night and you have the actors and actresses from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and DCCU (DC Cinematic Universe, pitted against each other; a nice thought to consider.

This mashup packs the punches and gore with hilarity to match.

Rating: 3 and a half stars.
