quirkified 80's
11 March 2024
It's 1989. Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) is a depressed high school teen after losing her mother. Her father quickly remarries Janet (Carla Gugino) and Taffy (Liza Soberano) is her new overly helpful cheerleader stepsister. She is obsessed with a specific grave in a nearby cemetery. When lighting strikes, the body (Cole Sprouse) comes back alive.

This is a quirkified 80's Tim Burton adjacent with a Heathers sensibility. In fact, I'm picturing this with a young Winona Ryder. Mostly, I'm not sold on Lisa. I'm not sold on her character arc and her turn into a semi-villain. It's her love of a constructed dream-boy. It's her turn from goth to mean girl to psycho killer to a victim of love. I'm not in love with this love story although I do like the weirdness. Instead of a dead mother, I would suggest a dead boyfriend. That would solve all my concerns.
