7/10
The monsterverse at its highest

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not a King Kong fan, I'm definitely much more of a Godzilla fan but after seeing the 2 films they just had together, I thought I would give Kong: Skull Island a chance and to my surprise, it's better than your ordinary Monsterverse film.

This film takes place during the 70's so it has a lot of 70's influence in it. 70's pop music, 70's style camera work, 70's style monster action etc. The premise wasn't anything too deep or stellar but hey it has a good story and decent enough execution to satisfy me and not get me hating on this film like I did to the others.

Despite the title, Kong: Skull Island, there is far more humans in here than monsters themselves. You'd be surprised when I say Kong definitely isn't the main character, rather its Marlow, who is a WW2 who got stranded on the unknown skull island after getting shot down. Even if the captain had more screen time overall, he doesn't have the same heart as Marlow who gives an amazing performance aided by his knowledge, vivid nature, and enthusiasm.

So because of the reasons I just mentioned, there is a lot more human action scenes than monster action scenes. Although not as thrilling as the ladder, it's still something entertaining which won't make you get bored at all. But then from the 2nd half, we start to get the monster fights the audience came to see. The team often includes the surroundings during a particular monster confrontation which makes it all the more entertaining

However one major sting was some of the human cast, specifically Packard and Randa. Packard was just straight out an idiot and Randa was basically on auto-pilot after the adventure began. Both of these 2 characters had a big role so more characterization or better writing for those 2 would have easily made this film more exciting and propel it up towards the 8/10's

Overall a much better film than your average monsterverse film but it could've been better

Rating: 7.5/10.
