Review of Unfrosted

Unfrosted (2024)
7/10
Bonkers but entertaining
4 May 2024
When I first heard about Jerry Seinfeld (who always seemed to have a thing for cereals) making this movie, I suspected it would be similar to movies like The Founder (about the rise of fast food restaurants in America), complete with nostalgic 1960s period detail. I didn't even research if Post had a similar toaster pastry product. I envisioned Seinfeld himself as the offbeat inventor of the pastry and even a subplot involving their "Danish-Go-Rounds" (remember those)?

Unfrosted is none of the above. It's a looney movie that goes for laughs wherever it can and allows for two comedians known for more raunchy material (Melissa McCarthy and Amy Schumer) to go "family friendly." This is not how Pop Tarts came to be and once you realize what the movie is, off the charts lunacy, you may end up enjoying it. The spoof of the January 6 attack on the US Capitol was a little cringe-worthy though...may be too soon for that. Although Hugh Grant does steal all of his scenes as the would-be Shakespearean actor reduced to playing Tony the Tiger. Also fans of the TV show Mad Men will get some good laughs at the surprise cameos. A good way to spend a rainy Saturday.
