Early Abstractions #2

Harry Smith was an American animator of abstract art who's most known work occurred from the 1940s into the 60s. During that period, he produced a series of short, avant-garde animated snippets of about 2-6 mins each, every one receiving a different number from the order they were made in. In 1987, these short animations were edited into a twenty-three minute movie entitled "Early Abstractions", and the clips are best remembered as being part of this half-hour sequence.

"Number 2: Message from the Sun" is basically no different from 1 which I reviewed earlier. It's the same type of animation, there are differences in what the shapes are of course but other than that not especially any better or worse than the previous movie. Apparently also hand-painted like its predecessor, this animated snippet, made two years later from the first, consists of a series of circles and squares moving around themselves through the usual static. Like the previous one, the hand-drawn aspect adds to the animation quality and makes it eye-catching to see. Again, not comprehensible for people who don't watch avant-garde but pleasant for someone with a fancy for this type of movie.
