After 32 years, I still remember this film...

I saw this fine little piece in a Romanian-subtitled print, in Bucharest in 1968. It was titled "In Orasul S." ("In the Town of S."), and I was so delighted with it, I went back the next night and saw it again. Essentially, it is a composite of several of Chekhov's stories, and the actor playing the lead role was in fact Chekhov, as a very aloof character who did little more than watch the events unfolding, somewhat like Pogo's role in the Walt Kelly comic strips. The film was a very warm-hearted view of people in Chekhov's Russia, variably eccentric, filling the observant Chekhov with his famous material. I'd love to see it again.
