Mastermind criminal Ricardo Montalban is nothing short of determined in keeping a clean reputation, even going as far as switching a businessman and secretary to fool private detective Sammy Davis Jr. He's desperately trying to keep Victoria Vetri from being abducted, and having partner Pat Boone trying to keep an eye on her doesn't seem very effective. His investigation leads him to Montalhan who wants a diary that Davis has in exchange for Vetri.
A big cast support Davis, and along the way, he encounters Dorothy Malone as Vetri's mother, Patsy Kelly as a dypsomaniac landlady looking for a drinking partner, and Roy Glenn, his own father. I could see this as a possible pilot, with Davis joking in character not to be referred to as Sam Spade. His easy going demeanor would have been perfect, and this is one TV movie out of many that could have churned out several seasons of episodes. A lot of fun with a groovy 60's feel.
