The Venom series directed by Chang Cheh are a cycle of martial action pictures that show his progression from one that crafted some of the masterpieces of the Shaw Brothers era to one that was seeing how far he could go in terms of pure entertainment. “Flag of Iron” whilst not as famous as “Five Deadly Venoms” or as politically incorrect (as it would be deemed now) as “Crippled Avengers” still sees the team at the height of their prowess and so, once again, I am letting that familiar logo play and see what lies in store.

After finishing “Challenge of the Masters” and “Executioners from Shaolin”, Chen Kuan Tai left Shaw Brothers, but upon his return in 1978, he starred in “Crippled Avengers”. Better known as “The Return of the Five Venoms” in America, this action packed revenge tale also features four actors from “The Five Deadly Venoms”. However, the Chinese title which loosely translates as “Incomplete” is probably more appropriate.
Du Tien Tao (Chen Kuan Tai) is a master of the Black Tiger style of kung fu. While he’s away; his enemies, the Tian Nan Three Tigers, storm his mansion and because they don’t believe in killing women and children, they chop off his wife’s legs but she dies anyway. Seconds after they cut off his son’s arms, Master Du returns and kills all three intruders with his deadly three Black Tiger styles, one for each enemy nonetheless. However,...

“The 36th Chamber Of Shaolin” is a 1978 Kung Fu action film, mixing up a melting pot of action, politics, Buddhism, comedy, high drama and lots of cool moves. This is a film for men by men filled with men! The only female character is one of the students at Mr Ho’s college, who pops up occasionally, but atypically in this historical setting, a woman gaining an education! Apart from this one brave participant for femininity, this is a man-tastic film!

I had the chance to sit down with Taya, one of the stars of the El Rey Network show Lucha Underground. We discussed her career, the state of women's wrestling, plus what fans can expect from the Mid Season premiere of Lucha Underground on May 31st.
Lrm: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. For those unfamiliar, what is Lucha Underground and why should fans watch?
Taya: Lucha Underground is a show and original series that is on the El Rey Network. We are now in the midst of the Season 3 hiatus. We come back from break on May 31st. It's a show that combines lucha libre, combined with action and gritty actions sequences. Really like a graphic novel come to life. It's not a wrestling show. It is a tv series and it is unlike anything you have seen in your entire life, I can tell you that.

Thanks to my surprisingly contrarian adoration of Kevin Smith (amongst critics, at least), I sat down for Yoga Hosers filled with curious excitement. One Kevin Smith movie packs more personality than some filmmakers produce over an entire career, and his daddy-daughter feature teased bizarre delicacies beyond Earthly words.
Alas, my take on Smith’s Canadian zero-to-hero nightmare aligns with most other negative views, but it’s still an admirably passionate project that I salute the renegade director for tackling. Smith takes tremendous creative risks every time he pens a script, and sometimes they become Clerks, or Tusk, or Zack And Miri Make A Porno, while other times they’re Yoga Hosers. It’s a numbers game, really.
So – regrettably – let’s get to the not fun part.
Yoga Hosers is a hollow genre mashup that can be best described as Buzzfeed meets Jem And The Holograms meets a neat-enough podcast discussion.

Event Horizon is almost 20 years old but it’s midnight movie cult status is fairly new. I saw it when it was new and thought it was good, but over the years a lot of younger movie geeks, to whom Event Horizon as apparently struck a chord, have approached me wanting to talk about it, and now here we are presenting at midnight at The Tivoli. Good.
Event Horizon was made in 1997 and is a somewhat conventional science-fiction horror film that reflects upon earlier sci-fi efforts such as 2001 A Space Odyssey and Alien, yet owes as much to the some of the gorier horror films of the ‘80s,...

My mom died thinking she threw away a copy of Superman number one from 1938.
Yes, I do indeed realize just how lame that must sound, and it would be if I gave a flying fish about that book with regards to my mother. I don’t but it’s important to the story I’m trying to write and just so I’m crystal clear, I’d happily burn the last copy left on Earth to spend just a minute more with my mother.
It was Superman number two she tossed out, and you can read the whole story entitled A Comic Book Tale on ComicMix.
I told her it was number one while trying to make the point that she should never throw out another comic book of mine, ever, and she never did. I have been keeping that my secret weapon for when I needed a real ‘gotcha’ to use on my mom.

Like many children growing up in the 1960s, Kenneth Hall loved monsters. Ever since he was a toddler, his mother — who was an especially big fan of Vincent Price — took him and his brother to see films like The Brides Of Dracula, Curse Of The Werewolf, and The Pit And The Pendulum. And that was all it took. At age 10, Hall discovered Famous Monsters of Filmland, and with the help of the trusty TV Guide, he and his brother made a point to watch as many of the films they read about as they could, even if it meant sneaking out of bed and staying up late to catch a showing of The Deadly Mantis. Like many Monster Kids of his time, there was a now-or-never mentality that came with a lack of home video, but growing up in Jacksonville, Fl did give Hall an extra advantage. It was the...

The Gameboy (1989)
The Gameboy, an 8-bit handheld video game device, was created by Gunpei Yokoi and Nintendo Research & Development 1—the same staff who had designed the Game & Watch series nearly a decade earlier. Redesigned versions were released in the form of Game Boy Pocket, and Game Boy Light (Japan only), but for the most part, each version contains the same hardware as the original.
The GameBoy was the very first internationally successful handheld gaming system, and upon its release in the United States, it sold its entire shipment of one million units within a few weeks. It was a phenomenon and the start of the popular handheld gaming trend.
On the design side of things, the GameBoy was made simple and devoid of any true styling. The plastic is light gray in color and has a slight texture, but that’s about it. But where the GameBoy does stand out is in build quality.

Conan and Marshawn Lynch have struck gold again--well... gold, green, red, orange, and purple. The enigmatic Seattle Seahawks tailback famous for his incomparably bone-crushing stiff-arms, media strategy, and Skittles obsession joined Conan for the first time since their landmark entry into the Clueless Gamer series featuring Mortal Combat X. Another Classic Beast Mode move is his touchdown celebration which should be seen rather than described. Conan figured,"Why not get Skittles 'in' on the celebration?" Essentially, Lynch jumps into a 6'x6'x2.5' tank of Skittles. Taste the celebration. ...

It was a good weekend for director David Fincher and his leading man Ben Affleck. Not only was their new movie Gone Girl number one this weekend, it banked a total that is one of the highest for each. Gone Girl's $38 million debut is the highest ever for Fincher whose previous top opener was Panic Room which opened with $30 million back in 2002. Affleck hasn't has a movie break opening weekend past $30 million since Daredevil earned $40 million in 2003. Horror flick Annabelle took a very narrow second place with $37 million. That's a solid come back for director John Leonetti whose last notable contribution to cinema was 1997's Mortal Combat: Annihilation. While not largely likely, with less than $1 million separating them it's not impossible for Annabelle to slip into number one with actual numbers replace estimates tomorrow. In the early 2000's Cloud Ten Pictures pushed their DVD release Left Behind into...

As you may know, we here at SciFi Mafia are major, elemental, over-the-top, gushing fans of the smart, creepy, completely addictive Helix. After last week’s addition of Jeri Ryan as the teeth-filing Constance Sutton, we all have even more questions.
Ms. Ryan and showrunner Steven Maeda spoke with media outlets last week about the character and the show, and to start, I asked her what drew her to the role:
Jeri Ryan: You know, it was fun – well the concept of the show to begin with was sort of intriguing to me. I hadn’t seen any of it at that point because it was just being shot. I loved the people that were involved in it. So that was all really cool. And then when I sort of was hearing a little bit more about the character and I was seeing how she was written, then it was fun…...

Syfy hosted a Q&A with "Helix" guest star Jeri Ryan and exec producer/showrunner Steve Maeda last week, and they revealed quite a bit about what's ahead now that Constance Sutton (Ryan) has arrived in the Arctic.
Things kick off with some discussion about Sutton, who she really is and her motives, and then we hear about topics ranging from the likelihood of a second season, Jeri's love of gore, how long they can keep up the series' intensity, Hatake’s obsession with Walker, the current state of genre TV, and much, much more.
If you're a fan of the show and/or Ryan (whose appearance as Ilaria's corporate "face" first occurred this past Friday night in Episode 1.07, "Survivor Zero," and will continue in future eps), you'll want to grab your morning coffee or tea and settle in for a bit.
It's President's Day; you don't have to work anyway,...

If you're a fan of the show and/or Ryan (whose appearance as Ilaria's corporate "face" first occurred this past Friday night in Episode 1.07, "Survivor Zero," and will continue in future eps), you'll want to grab your morning coffee or tea and settle in for a bit.

The Crippled Avengers (a.k.a. Return of the Five Deadly Venoms)
Written by Chang Cheh and Ni Kuang
Directed by Chang Cheh
Hong Kong, 1978
By taking a moment to look at Chang Cheh’s career as a director at the Shaw Brothers studio, one might come to notice that several of the stories he shared employed unorthodox protagonists, namely for their physical attributes. In the late 1960s, there was The One Armed Swordsman, which told the exploits of a talented young student whose misfortune in love led to his arm being chopped off. Determination, practice, and spirit proved doubters wrong as he became a great hero, bringing justice back to the land. Then came the many films starring David Chiang. While true that his characters were never hampered by any physical deficiency resulting from an accident or the malfeasance of others, he was by nature short and lean. Upon first glance,...

From Mortal Combat to Avp to the insanely profitable Resident Evil and Death Race franchises, Paul Ws Anderson has his meat hooks in a lot of geek culture properties. But now, the self-professed fanboy has set his sights to one of histories greatest natural disasters, the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in his upcoming history epic, Pompeii.
The first trailer has dropped and it's all rock and roll destructo-porn with a decidedly ripped John Snow... c'mon, I call CG abs on that guy.
Synopsis:
Set in the days leading up to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, a slave on a ship heading for Naples works to get home to save the woman he loves and his best friend, a gladiator trapped inside of the city's coliseum.

As soon as Sylvester Stallone tweeted that he was looking for the "young" Sigourney Weaver, we knew that we wouldn't have to wait for "The Expendabelles" to see a femme tough action star join the "Expendables" universe. In fact, Lionsgate is priming the pump for that spin-off by adding a woman to its hitherto all-male "The Expendables" cast. So, arguably three women have current franchise-level followings on the kick-ass side: Michelle Rodriguez ("Fast & Furious"), Kate Beckinsale ("Underworld"), and "Resident" femme action star Milla Jovovich. So on a Lionsgate earnings call today CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed that Jovovich is in talks to join new cast members Nic Cage ("Ghost Rider"), Wesley Snipes ("Mortal Combat") and Jackie Chan ("Rush Hour") on the next "Expendables," which starts filming in August with director Patrick Hughes ("Red Hill") for 2014 release. Of course this only serves to remind us how much younger women are when they are considered to be veterans:.

We’ve had an eye on Injustice: Gods Among Us for a while now down here in the We Got This Covered Bunker. I don’t think there is a nerd alive who hasn’t had the arguments of which superhero would win in a fist fight, and for the most part there hasn’t been any way to settle the score. Sure, there was Mortal Combat vs DC Universe, however considering that game was pretty much terrible, I’m going to go back to pretending it never existed. (I’d really recommend that you do the same)

Only 5 designers left on Project Runway All Stars. Each of the designers are talented in his or her own right so the only way to weed them out is through more unconventional challenges. This week the designers’ technological skills were put to the test in an avante-garde challenge. Some went safe and some were a little too crazy. They all ended up as Jerell put it: “either fabulous of fugly.”
This weeks challenge combined technology and fashion. The designers were to put together an avante-garde look using different types of lights. Pharrell Williams was the guest judge this week and the winning design would be worn by one of the artists he works with.
There is still not too much going on in the work. The only interesting thing was Michael and his usual antics. He ended up making an array of dresseds before he settled on his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle look.

I am far from being a prude.
In fact, I’m so far away from being a prude the next level in my open mindedness would be to become a prude.
I’ve met a lot of prudes in my life and nothing makes a prude more prudish than their views on sex.
Me? As long as it does not include kids or animals I say what ever floats your boat sexually, have at it. You would have to be into some sick shit (kids, animals, Republicans) to disgust me.
I’m not quite at the point that I’m disgusted by the depiction of some women in superhero comics but I’m far from all right with it and have not been all right with it for a while now. It’s just a real turn off to me and it’s also one of the reasons a lot...

"You ever walk into a situation where you know exactly what's going to happen, and you go into it anyway? And when what you're afraid of happens, you kick yourself because you should have known better, but that's just who you are, so you keep punishing yourself."
This is a line from an episode of Once Upon a Time, but it could also be a quote from any fan of the show,Lost who has started to watch this freshman drama on ABC. Once Upon a Time is from the minds of a couple of Lost writers, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, who not only make allusions to Lost (The town clock being stuck at 8:15, 108 being Henry's home address, Apollo candy bars, etc.), but borrow the basic setup of an average episode of Lost: Inter-cutting flashbacks with the current storyline. This is a good formula until it isn't.

Paul W.S. Anderson is nothing if not consistent. The much-despised filmmaker is known for bastardizing video game adaptations and being a little too much in love with slow motion, but the man has an audience, and he knows what they want and gives it to them in heaps. With The Three Musketeers, one has to wonder: What audience did he make this for?
Is this umpteenth adaptation of Alexandre Dumas‘ classic adventure meant to be a kids film, considering the terribly immature and condescending humor? Is it intended to be cool, with all the stagy, slowed-down action? Or did Anderson set out to make a parody? After two hours of over-the-top, bland and empty bangs and noises, the parody argument starts to feel right. There are more than a few unintentional laughs going on here.
“Disaster” is a word that gets thrown around too much nowadays, but Anderson’s film more than earns the hyberbole.

The Film:
Fans will probably remember this film from its better known title, Crippled Avengers, as a group of locals are getting irritiated with a pissed off tyrant who raised his son after he lost his hands, into an unstoppable martial artist with metallic hands. Unable to stop him, these locals become crippled and soon bond and learn from an old master to use their disabilities to develop them into unique martial art masters in their own right. Evil tyrannt? Brotherly bonding? Awesome martial art fighting scenes? It must be a Chang Cheh film!
While the title The Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms makes it seem as if this film is a sequel to Cheh’s kung fu masterpiece in The 5 Deadly Venoms (here), it really only reveals its connection to the stars Philip Kwok, Lo Meng, Sun Chien and Chiang Sheng from that film. Okay, if there was a Pokemon movie in the works, someone would have written about it somewhere, which is why this leaked trailer is a hard sell to me. Sure, movie news falls through the cracks all the time. Even that pitch video of Mortal Combat remake threw us off a few months back, but still there were rumblings of that movie getting a remake, so it wasn’t totally out of the ordinary.
However, back to this Pokemon live-action trailer, someone really has a vision and made a really cool look to a world that for the most part seemed anything but dark. The trailer below features the classic elements of Pokemon, such as mythic monsters fighting and trading things like pogs or cards. However, the real grittiness is in the horror of it all, but also the maniacal Team Rocket, blasting their way through competition.

Overall it's a pretty jam-packed DVD release day, although you wouldn't know it to look at just the few high profile movies hitting stores today. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the big one, along with summer snoozers Just Wright starring Queen Latifah and Letters to Juliet starring Amanda Seyfried. Indie releases include Werner Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, Ken Loach's soccer dramedy Looking For Eric, and Thai action film Raging Phoenix. On Blu-ray, there's plenty of genre goodness like The Twilight Zone: Season 1, Return of the Living Dead, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and a ton of TV releases, including Fringe, Glee, Bored to Death and Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!. Do you see anything worth buying or renting anything this week? Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Just Wright [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Letters to Juliet [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) Boogie Woogie...

[Editor's note: If you want to see an example of just how kick-ass the fighting in Ud III is watch this fight clip and crank the volume.]
I may be new to the Undisputed series, but I ain't new to fight films - particulary those that go straight-to-video. Hell, I grew up in the era of straight-to-video. I remember a time where there wasn't any predjudice against them at all and any flick with badass cover art had the same chance of getting played as a blockbuster. Sure a lot of them were sequels to minor hits like Bloodsport or what-have-you, but as the years rolled on and more money got thrown into the Stv market, some of these titles got even better than the originals.
Which brings us to Undisputed III, a film that gives Stv tites a good name as is probably the best of the entire Undisputed series. Why is that? Two reasons: Scott Adkins is...

In case you cared, Dinner for Schmucks is moving back a week -- from July 23rd to July 30th -- because they don't want to get in the way of the Inception juggernaut. Me: I'm just happy that there actually might be a juggernaut this summer. It's been a huge bummer of a blockbuster season so far. (Variety)
Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, and Rashida Jones have all joined the cast of My Idiot Brother with Paul Rudd. Those four women, actually, would make 4/5ths of a pretty amazing freebies list. A lot of folks probably wouldn't complain if Paul Rudd were the 5th (I'd add him, but only if he danced). In it, Rudd plays an idealist who crashes at the homes of his three ambitious sisters and brings both havoc and revelatory happiness into their lives. (Variety)

I admit I watched Mortal Kombat opening weekend at the theater. Hot guys beating the shit out of each other? Why wouldn't I go? Plus, to hear "Mortal Kombat!" screamed in digital stereo was pretty fantastik. True, the movie wasn't all that. I caught it again on Netflix and it hasn't aged very well. But the guys are still hot if even if the beatings aren't quite that savage....
Anyway, this new video is going around the web. Apparently it's some kind of viral campaign, either for the new Mortal Combat video game, or to gauge interest in a new, more "realistic" take on the premise of super powered mutants kicking magic ass across the city.
I just say it looks cool.

Well, here's a good deal of noise on a franchise that barely seems to warrant the effort ... but it looks like Warner Bros. just hit a road block on their way to a Mortal Kombat 3. The legal kind that has angry people on both sides of the argument.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Larry Kasanoff and his Threshold Entertainment outfit are planning to sue WB for moving forward on a Mortal Kombat 3 without Threshold's involvement. Needless to say, Mr. Kasanoff is none too happy about the situation: "the Mortal Kombat series, as it stands today, is far more a creation of Threshold and Kasanoff than of Midway," states the lawsuit, and that the suit will tally "an amount which, considering Warner's enormous worldwide wealth and income, is sufficient to punish Warner, to set an example and to deter further such wrongful behavior." Yowch!

I’ve only walked out of two movies in my entire life: Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and, last week, Post Grad. I’ve come close to walking out of others but something or someone always gets me to stay in my seat. I first saw the trailer for Post Grad when I went to see I Love You, Beth Cooper (a movie that took every fiber of my being to sit through). I’ll be honest with you; I am recently out of college and jobless. I don’t know what made me think I could relate to Post Grad, but I knew I’d have to see it. If you read my last article, you know that I am also an absolute sucker for coming of age films. The added advantage that I have is the Optimum Rewards Card.
