Following a years-long development process, Apple will officially make a TV series based on William Gibson’s acclaimed sci-fi novel Neuromancer.
The tech giant and streamer has handed out a 10-episode series order to the drama based on the 1984 cyberpunk novel that launched Gibson’s career and the so-called Sprawl trilogy that also includes novels Count Zero (1986) and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988).
Dark Winds creator Graham Roland and J.D. Dillard (The Twilight Zone) created the series for television. The series, a co-production between Skydance Television and Anonymous Content, will see Roland serve as showrunner with Dillard on board to direct the pilot.
Apple says Neuromancer revolves around a “damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”

The Monty Python legend and director of 12 Monkeys and Brazil will be receiving his first Aardman Slapstick award for visual comedy next month. Ask him anything here
Terry Gilliam has directed 13 feature films including 1981 fantasy adventure Time Bandits with Sean Connery and John Cleese, 1995’s sci-fi thriller 12 Monkeys with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt and 2005 fantasy adventure The Brothers Grimm with Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. It all started, of course, with 1975’s Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the first Monty Python film, which Gilliam co-wrote and starred in along with his fellow Pythons, as well as directing.
Although American-born, Gilliam renounced his American citizenship in 2006. He was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay for 1985 sci-fi dystopian dark comedy Brazil and a Golden Globe for best director for 1991 fantasy comedy-drama The Fisher King. John Cleese is best known as a member of the British comedy troupe Monty Python. Let’s look back at the Oscar-nominated funnyman and his 12 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1939 in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, England, Cleese rose to prominence thanks to the British sketch series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” which ran for four seasons on the BBC from 1969-1974. The troupe — which also included Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin — revolutionized comedy with their surreal, experimental sketches, the best of which were assembled into the film “And Now for Something Completely Different” (1971). This led to other cinematic outings, including “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (1975), “Life of Brian” (1979) and “The Meaning of Life” (1983).
Cleese achieved big screen success of his own with “A Fish Called Wanda” (1988), which he wrote and starred in as an uptight English barrister who becomes entangled in an elaborate...

U.S. writer-director Terry Gilliam had the crowd in stitches throughout his masterclass at the Lumière Film Festival, where he presented the restored version of his 1995 cult movie “12 Monkeys.”
The former Monty Python member, whose career as a director started with the 1975 satirical comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” said that while he was keen to approach difficult subjects, he had learnt from Mary Poppins the secret of success.
“She taught me that the sugar helps the medicine go down,” he quipped, to the audience’s delight.
On a more serious note, Gilliam said that his main goal as a filmmaker was “to make films that make you think about the world in a different way.”
Rejecting the way reality is presented by the media, which he described as “too limited,” Gilliam said it could be “more fascinating, bizarre and surprising.”

In the sixth season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," in a two-part episode called "Chain of Command", Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) was released from his command of the U.S.S. Enterprise so that he may engage in a top-secret mission to a planet called Celtris III. His mission was to infiltrate a secret underground facility and locate a massively dangerous biological weapon that the Cardassians were said to be developing. The mission, however, was based on tainted intelligence, and there was no weapon. Instead, Picard is captured by a sadistic and terrifying Cardassian general named Madred (David Warner) who aims to torture Picard.
Madred didn't need information from Picard, however. The aim of Madred's cool and calculated infliction of pain seemed to be to break Picard's will, to merely prove that a stalwart and loyal officer could be snapped and conditioned. In a particularly vicious game, Madred illuminates...

Home to the Taylor Sheridan stable and to the “Star Trek” franchise, Paramount+ is looking for “populist” dramas that hold a wider sway and can span several seasons, said Paramount TV president Nicole Clemens at her keynote at Mia Market in Rome on Tuesday.
“We’re not looking for shows that just play to New York and Los Angeles,” Clemens explained. “That doesn’t mean they’re not edgy, that doesn’t mean [they can’t be] dark. But we want to have a broader, propulsive appeal. Something like populist literature would be a good [description.]”
Pointing toward the recent “Frasier” reboot, Clemens described her company’s half-hour remit as “big, loud, funny, hard comedy,” and if that comes with recognizable star or brand name I.P. – or both, as luck would have it for the Kelsey Grammer-led reboot – then all the better.
More importantly, the shows would have room to grow over several years.

With the notable exception of the beloved Carrie Fisher, many of the iconic lead actors in the "Star Wars" saga are still with us. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, and Natalie Portman are all going strong, and so are the stars of the space opera's most recent episodes. Some of the actors from the original film who were already veterans at the time, like Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing, died some years ago, but both enjoyed long lives beyond the average age.
Sadly, this cannot be said of numerous other actors involved in the big screen franchise and its recent TV spin-offs. Performers have died in their 70s, 60s, and 50s, many of them leaving us wishing we could have seen more years of great performances from them. Whether they had spotlight roles or were hidden behind alien masks, here are the "Star Wars" actors we lost too soon.

Celebrated director (and sometime actor) Werner Herzog and his longtime cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger will be bestowed with the Cinematographer-Director Duo Award at this year’s 31st EnergaCamerimage festival this fall in Toruń, Poland, a European celebration of the best-of-the-best cinematographers around the world. The honor will also include a retrospective of their work which will include narrative features as well as documentaries.
Herzog and Zeitlinger first collaborated on the 1995 German film “Gesualdo: Death for Five Voices” and have teamed up for many of the former’s most notable films, including “Grizzly Man,” “Rescue Dawn,” “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” and “Into the Abyss.” It is expected a number of these films will be shown alongside the soon-to-be-announced competition films at Camerimage.

New Zealand’s government has announced changes to its rebate schemes for both international and local production, the conclusion of a major review of the country’s incentives programs that started in late 2022.
The tweaks include a name change – New Zealand’s Screen Production Grant (Nzspg) will now be known as the Screen Production Rebate (Nzspr). However, the core rebate offered to international productions of 20% of qualifying New Zealand production expenditure remains unchanged.
The 5% uplift to the rebate, first introduced in 2014 to generate “greater economic and cultural benefits for New Zealand”, has been redeveloped to make it “simpler to navigate”, while the application criteria has been made “clearer and more objective”, according to a government statement.
The statement also said that the redeveloped uplift will have more weighting on New Zealand screen workforce development and production activity; recognizes repeat business to encourage studios and productions to return; and introduces sustainability...

Camerimage Film Festival, which is devoted to the art of cinematography, is to pay tribute to Peter Biziou. The British cinematographer, who won an Oscar for “Mississippi Burning,” and was BAFTA nominated for “The Truman Show,” will receive the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Biziou, the son of cinematographer-animator Leon Bijou, started his career at an animation company in London. In the mid-sixties, he started to light film sets for commercials and shorts, which helped foster “his innate intuition and his courage to implement innovation,” the festival said. He worked with the likes of Len Fulford, Bob Brooks, Terence Donovan, John Swannell and Frank Budgen.
His work with fashion photographer Robert Freeman brought an invitation for Biziou to be in charge of the visuals on Freeman’s fiction film debut, 1969’s “Secret World,” starring Jacqueline Bisset, which was well-received.

The satire that would pervade Terry Gilliam’s subsequent Brazil is largely confined to the first few minutes of 1981’s Time Bandits. The film opens in a modern, English household where a boy, Kevin (Craig Warnock), pores over a book on ancient Greek history while his parents (David Daker and Sheila Fearn) both watch and read advertisements, discussing the relative merits of their various gadgets and appliances compared to those of their neighbors. The living room is lit with harsh artificial light and decorated like a showroom, a place designed as a boast, not to be lived in. Only Kevin’s room, naturally lit via a window and adorned with self-taken photographs and childlike drawings, betrays any humanity.
Soon, the cozy retreat of Kevin’s room is invaded, though not by his parents, but by a medieval knight on horseback, and then a sextet of time-traveling dwarves who recruit the...

Terry Gilliam walks, trots actually, through the white alleys of Monopoli. Humming as he goes: “I’ve got two legs from my hips to the ground/And when they move they walk around/And when I lift them they climb the stairs/And when I shave them they ain’t got hairs.”
“That’s the most important and well-known song I’ve ever written,” he jokes, “and I understand this now more than ever: Being an almost 83-year-old man, I thank my legs every day. They haven’t betrayed me yet!”
Far from being an “old man,” Gilliam remains a force of nature. In person, he is almost too much: At turns sensitive, raw and irreverent, with a razor-sharp intelligence and irrepressible imagination. The only American member of legendary British comedy troupe Monty Python, the man whose contributions to cinema include gems like Brazil, Time Bandits and The Fisher King,...

The New Zealand government said on Tuesday that the country’s generous screen production incentives systems are to be continued.
The decision follows a New Zealand government review of the local and international production incentives and the post-production and visual effects schemes that began in late 2022.
They also follow expansion announced earlier this month of the rebate schemes in Australia. The two neighbors compete for international or ‘runaway’ productions on criteria including: locations, English-language skills, studio space, post-production and digital effects facilities, as well as cash rebates.
The screen sector contributes more than Nz$3.5 billion ($2.12 billion) to the New Zealand economy each year and directly employs over 13,900 people. The sector also has indirect benefits for other industries such as hospitality, construction and tourism, the government said.
The renewal of the New Zealand Screen Production Grant (Nzspg) system come with a handful of tweaks. One of these is to the scheme’s name.

A phenomenon familiar to those in England, but perhaps obscure to those elsewhere, is the notion of the Page Three Girl. In 1970, the lascivious supermarket tabloid The Sun, a paper run by Rupert Murdoch, began running photographs of up-and-coming models, usually topless, on page three. The photos became so popular that other tabloids like the Daily Mirror and the Daily Star followed suit. The models featured became known as Page Three Girls, and some of them became minor celebrities for their spreads. Page Three Girls, of course, sparked an enormous amount of controversy. From this author's own childhood recollections, some tried to pass off the topless pictures phenomenon as a bit of harmless, sexy fun folded into a newspaper that was already completely lacking in credibility anyway. Others objected to the outwardly prurient nature of the nudie pictures, pointing to them as a prime example of widespread sexism and the commodification of women's bodies.

When J.K. Rowling's popular "Harry Potter" series of books enchanted children and adults the world over, a Hollywood bidding war erupted. Every studio in town wanted the rights to the publishing phenomenon. Warner Bros. ultimately won out, at which point the hard work of finding the right filmmaker to launch the cash-cow franchise began.
Steven Spielberg was the obvious choice, but he envisioned the adaptations as an animated series. This was too limiting for WB, which turned the project into the most coveted open assignment in the industry. Many of the most desired directors were too auteurist for the assignment. Peter Weir, Alan Parker and M. Night Shyamalan had a distinctive style that might've overwhelmed or outright clashed with the mainstream-skewing material.
These films needed a steady hand, someone who could deliver a homogenized, four-quadrant take on the family-friendly books. They needed, and got, Chris Columbus. But if Rowling had her way,...

Following word of an incredible Pasolini boxset, the Criterion Collection have unveiled their larger June lineup. The 4K rollout continues apace, and for some reason Terry Gilliam now has the most releases––following The Fisher King and Baron Munchausen, his George Harrison-produced Time Bandits arrives in a well-stacked edition. Much as I might question more and more super-hi-def releases for this of all filmmakers, one must remember: everybody has their reasons. And it’s arguably a suitable compensation, for ourselves and film history at larger, that this same month brings an upgrade for The Rules of the Game.
Barry Jenkins joins the collection with his debut feature Medicine for Melancholy, whose lifespan––small SXSW premiere in 2008, minor theatrical release 12 months later, years of relative obscurity, and now a Criterion––we can only consider aspirational. But maybe my favorite movie arriving in June––even greater than Renoir––is Joseph Losey’s absurdly entertaining,...

Every year the “In Memoriam” tribute at the Oscars leaves off a few fan favorites and 2023 was no exception: Among those who weren’t included in Sunday night’s video montage were Anne Heche, “Saving Private Ryan” star Tom Sizemore and Charlbi Dean, who appeared in this year’s Best Picture nominee “Triangle of Sadness.”
Fans also noted the absence of Cindy Williams: While she was best known for the ’70s TV sitcom “Laverne & Shirley,” she notably appeared in two classic films of the era, George Lucas’ “American Graffiti” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation.”
And while the tribute included “Goodfellas” star Ray Liotta, who died unexpectedly on May 26, 2022, his costar Paul Sorvino, who died in July 2022, was left out.

A shakeup has hit management-production company Anonymous Content’s top ranks, with CEO Dawn Olmstead and COO Heather McCauley resigning.
“I can confirm that, effective immediately, I am resigning as CEO of Anonymous Content,” Olmstead said in a statement. “I am proud of all we accomplished during my two years at the company. I am especially grateful to my extraordinary team who worked alongside me to take Anonymous to exciting new levels. I wish them all the best.”
Olmstead had been at her post since late 2020, when she departed as Universal Cable Productions president. McCauley joined as COO in January after a decade at Netflix, most recently serving as VP, business and legal affairs. No reasons were given for the departures.
Said the board of Anonymous in a statement: “Thanks to Dawn’s contributions, the company is in a strong position, and we are confident that our team, values and talent will continue to thrive.

Many actors have a hard time watching their movies, and The Beatles were no different regarding their first movie, A Hard Day’s Night. While attending a screening of A Hard Day’s Night, every member failed to sit through the screening, except George Harrison. Harrison sat through the whole thing, which could be because he was the only one who could stand his acting.

The Beatles acted in movies such as A Hard Day’s Night, Help!, and Magical Mystery Tour. Each film was a musical comedy that featured excellent soundtracks promoting The Beatles’ music. None of the fab four were trained actors, so this was a new experience for them.

Exclusive: Anonymous Content is developing Ryan La Sala’s bestselling social horror novel The Honeys for film.
The Honeys follows a queer teen, Mars, who is investigating the connection between his twin sister Caroline’s violent death and the Honeys, a group of beautiful, otherworldly girls who she boarded with at her exclusive summer camp. As Mars probes into who — or what — the Honeys really are, he’s surprised to find them inviting him into their world. He discovers they’re guarding a dark and sickeningly sweet secret in the meadows behind their cabin that could cost him everything.
David Levine and Garrett Kemble will oversee the project for Anonymous Content’s AC Studios. La Sala will serve as EP.
La Sala’s bestselling and award-winning novels center around surreal things happening to queer people, including Reverie and Be Dazzled, both published by Sourcebooks, and The Honeys (Scholastic). His next...

Beatles songs are constantly utilized or referenced in pop culture. A majority of these songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. While George Harrison wrote a few classic Beatles tracks, his successful solo career proved he was a phenomenal artist outside of the fab four. His songs became iconic and were used in many movies and TV shows to improve certain scenes.

“What is Life” is one of George Harrison’s most recognizable songs, particularly due to the catchy chorus. In Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, the song is used during a montage scene where Henry (Ray Liotta) is stressing over a drug operation. He is trying to complete an illegal task while dealing with police paranoia and an apathetic teen to who he gives too much responsibility.
