A fine Macbeth
TheLittleSongbird26 July 2011
I love Verdi, I love the play Macbeth, so this opera is perfect. This is a fine Macbeth, my only complaints being the witches, well sung and acted but they do look silly. The costume and set design however are spot on, and the film is interestingly photographed. The story is still compelling, the banqueting scene and sleepwalking scene are particularly well done here, and the music is wonderful throughout. The orchestra play absolutely beautifully, and the conducting embodies passion. The singing is excellent, Shirley Verrett is a bloodthirsty and vocally strong Lady Macbeth, and Leo Nucci is excellent as her husband. Samuel Ramey and Veriano Luchetti provide very musical singing as Banco and Macduff, and their acting counterparts aren't too shabby either. Overall, a fine Macbeth. 9/10 Bethany Cox
