Steve Martin may be riding high on his success with comedy-crime series Only Murders in the Building but, in a new documentary, he reflects on some troughs in his long career as well as the many high points.
The comedian – who got his big break as a writer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, became one of the all-time most popular hosts of Saturday Night Live and went on to huge success with movies including The Man with Two Brains, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Roxanne and LA Story – is the subject of the two-part documentary Steve! (Martin), directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville, which premieres on Apple March 29.
The doc includes an angst-inducing clip from 1996 when Martin was ambushed at the premiere of Sgt Bilko, one of his least successful movies, by the British red-carpet disruptor Dennis Pennis, played by comedian Paul Kaye. Footage, which went viral at the time, showed...

Jerry Seinfeld calls him ‘the most idolised comedian ever’. Yet after five decades at the top, success still makes him cringe. He discusses doubting himself, starring in a documentary – and that Dennis Pennis encounter
I didn’t expect Steve Martin to be funny. Sure, it was his skewwhiff sensibility that made The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains, LA Story and Bowfinger so deliriously inspired. And he was comedy’s first double-platinum-record-selling, stadium-touring megastar; he began wearing a white suit on stage only so that he could be seen by fans in the cheap seats several postcodes away. He crafted riotous slapstick crescendos in All of Me and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and displayed a literary flair even at his silliest. No one who has seen Roxanne, the modern-day interpretation of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac that found Martin investing his comedy with emotional weight for the first time, will...

It's hard to read the news these days without feeling a sense of existential dread flare up in your soul. Of course, we're nearly four decades removed now from Steve Martin picking up a newspaper and screaming in his classic '80s rom-com "Roxanne," so it's not as though fretting about the state of the world is a new sensation. Be that as it may, filmmakers have spent much of the 21st century postulating how human society might come toppling down. Perhaps global warming will do us in, like in "The Day After Tomorrow." Or maybe humanity's tampering with nature will produce a super-virus that plunges our global civilization into chaos, like in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." That movie feels especially prescient in the wake of 2020.

Stewart Copeland, founding drummer of The Police, will document his band’s humble beginnings in his upcoming book Police Diaries.
Out October 26th, Police Diaries is billed as “the band’s truest account of their early days.” It compiles scans of original diary entries written during The Police’s “starving years” between 1976 and 1979, supplemented with new commentary to give those candid accounts some context. It’s all fleshed out with a series of photos, including some never-before-published.
Police Diaries is available to pre-order now in three different editions: Standard, which includes just the book; Signature, which includes a signed copy and a bonus demo CD; and Ultimate, which features a vintage-bound hardback, a Giclée print, and more. In Stewart’s own words: “It’s a big, noisy book about one heckuva ride.”
Copeland also recently hopped on Consequence’s The Story Behind the Song podcast to discuss The Police’s hit “Roxanne.

Shelley Duvall was a Texas college student when she basically just fell into an acting career. She happened to meet director Robert Altman at a party while he was in Texas shooting his movie Brewster McCloud. Intrigued by her “upbeat presence and unique physical appearance”, the director and crew members talked Duvall into taking a role in the film. Suddenly she was an actress who started racking up credits: Nashville, Annie Hall, The Shining, Popeye, Time Bandits, Roxanne, The Portrait of a Lady, and fifty more, including hosting her own TV show, Faerie Tale Theatre. She retired from acting over twenty years ago (although she recently filmed a role in the horror movie The Forest Hills)… and in recent years, she has been in the news for her struggles with mental illness. ABC’s American Idol 2023 has already had its ups and downs. The season might have some of the best singers yet, but fans have also seen a few jarring forfeits midseason. Two competitors quit during Hollywood Week ahead of Showstoppers. Here’s who left — and here’s the one competitor who nearly quit before returning.
Why did Sara Beth Liebe quit ‘American Idol’? Sara Beth Liebe and Clay Aiken | ABC/Eric McCandless
Sara Beth Liebe wasn’t so sure about American Idol 2023 from the very beginning. She hit the stage during the auditions and impressed the judges with her voice — and she then shocked them when she admitted she had three kids at home. At just 25 years old, Katy Perry went on to make a not-so-subtle joke about Sara Beth lying down for too long, which Sara didn’t like.
During Hollywood Week, Sara broke down completely. She performed “Roxanne...

Los Angeles, April 7 (Ians) American rapper Diddy said that he is paying Sting $5,000 per day for sampling the Police frontman’s 1983 blockbuster hit ‘Every Breath You Take’ on his own 1997 song ‘I’ll Be Missing You’.
Diddy tweeted in response to a resurfaced video clip from a 2018 interview Sting did with the Breakfast Club, reports Variety.
As noted by the Shade Room, the clips shows interviewer Charlamagne Tha God asking Sting to confirm whether Diddy pays him $2,000 daily for sampling the song on ‘I’ll Be Missing You’. Sting said yes, “for the rest of his life,” to laughter, and then confirmed that Diddy asked for permission to sample the hit after his own song was released.

American Idol contestant Sara Beth Liebe quits after speaking out against Katy Perry’s ‘mum-shaming’
Sara Beth Liebe, a contestant on American Idol, has quit the show after speaking out about Katy Perry’s “mum-shaming” comments.
Liebe quit the series on Sunday night (2 April) after a performance of The Police’s song “Roxanne”.
“This opportunity is really rad, but this is actually gonna be my last performance ’cause my heart’s at home,” she told Perry and co-judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.
“So I’m gonna get home to my babies. They kinda need me. So thank you,” she added before rushing off the stage.
The 25-year-old shocked the judges with her decision, with the three stars urging the musician to come back.
Perry told Liebe: “Sara Beth, I know life is scary. I also know that it’s easier to walk away than to be rejected. But then I also know that you lose out on your fullest potential.”

Katy Perry and former “American Idol” contestant, Sara Beth Liebe, appear to be on good terms after Liebe expressed last month that she felt hurt by Perry’s “mom shaming” comment during her audition.
In fact, during Sunday’s episode, Perry rallied for Liebe as she tried to convince the singer multiple times to stay in the competition as she struggled with wanting to go home to be with her three young children. The 25-year-old ultimately chose to quit the competition despite Perry’s efforts.

But then I also know that you lose out on your fullest potential and I know that you love your family for your kids. I know that as a mother. But remember, self-love is just as big as motherly love.

For instance, Sting – whose own stage name has an interesting backstory – was inspired to write his 1993 hit song “Fields of Gold” by his 16th-century home. Here’s what we know about how one of his most famous tunes came to be.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Sting entered the music business as the lead singer of The Police. During this time, the singer headlined several hit songs, including “Roxanne,” “Message in a Bottle,” “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” and “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.

Coincidentally, George T. Miller’s rise as a filmmaker closely paralleled that of his fellow Australian, “Mad Max” director George Miller.

After more than 60 years in the industry, Steve Martin is hinting that it's only a matter of time before he retires. In 2021, Martin made his "Only Murders in the Building" debut as former TV star Charles-Haden Savage, sharing the screen with Selena Gomez and longtime friend Martin Short. Prior to hosting a fictional true-crime podcast and investigating murders on screen, Martin, who turned 77 on Aug. 14, spent decades winning the hearts of fans with his acting, iconic comedy routines, and impressive banjo skills. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on Aug. 10, Martin admitted that his "Omitb" role is likely his last.
"When this television show is done, I'm not going to seek others. I'm not going to seek other movies."
"We were very happy just doing the live show," Martin said. "There may be a natural end to that - somebody gets sick, somebody just wears out -...

It’s no mystery why Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” is nominated for 17 Emmy Awards including comedy series, actor and guest actor and actress: a delish plot, snappy dialogue, pitch-perfect directing, and a cast to die for led by Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. They are “The Three Amigos” for the 21st century. To celebrate the series, which recently had its second season finale, why not look at some fun facts and trivia of the cast many of whom already have mantle full of honors.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

Moulin Rouge is perhaps the most beloved big-screen musical of our modern era. However, it was not the smash hit people remember it as being. In fact, director Baz Luhrmann recently made headlines for the fact that his latest film, Elvis, has become his top-grossing movie ever at a relatively modest 145 million. Surely Moulin Rouge made more? Actually, it only grossed 57 million at the domestic box office, being widely considered a flop when it came out. However, over the years, the film’s cult grew and grew, thanks to a fully-stacked DVD release that led to the film becoming a cult sensation. It’s definitely one of star Nicole Kidman’s most iconic roles, while Ewan McGregor became one of the biggest romantic heartthrobs of his generation in its wake.

After solving Tim Kono's (Julian Cihi) and Zoe Cassidy's (Olivia Reis) murders — not to mention outing Teddy Diams' (Nathan Lane) criminal enterprise — the "Only Murders in the Building" sleuths finally got the chance to celebrate their investigative achievements. Of course, as soon as the crime-solving trio popped a bottle of champagne in Season 2, Mabel (Selena Gomez) discovers the body of the dreaded Arconia's building board president. Worse, whoever killed Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) sets up Mabel, Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin) to take the fall.
As "Only Murders in the Building" nears its Season 2 finale, it's fair to say that this sophomore outing has been a vast improvement overall. That's not to say Season 1 failed in its comedy-mystery approach: there's a good reason why the second season received 17 Emmy nominations, whereas Season 1 snagged none. The cast's chemistry and comedic timing soar in its latest season, showcasing a...

Steve Martin has been many things — a comic, an actor, a filmmaker, an author, a musician — and he’ll soon be one more. He’s going to be the subject of a documentary.
Martin is participating in a two-part feature from A24 which is set to be released by Apple TV+. Morgan Neville, who helmed Oscar-winning doc 20 Feet From Stardom as well as Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and dozens of other film and TV projects, is directing and producing. There’s no title or anticipated release date as of yet, but production has been ongoing.
“It’s somebody else’s take,” Martin tells THR of the process. “They found a lot of archival stuff. “They found a photo of my father in 1944 in Germany, touring Our Town with the Uso.”

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Hulu is certainly hoping its version is the definitive one.

Joe Wright’s Cyrano twirls onto 797 screens, the highest-profile specialty release in weeks (as the market awaits Focus Features The Outfit with Mark Rylance and Sony Pictures Classics Mothering Sunday). But the well reviewed period musical romance from Uar starring Peter Dinklage is landing in a tough place. Industry estimates anticipate a low single digit opening given the inconsistent reception for movie musicals and the fact that its key older demos, especially women, have been the slowest to return to theaters.
Cyrano is based on Edmond Ronstand’s late 19th century drama Cyrano de Bergerac – itself loosely based on a French nobleman known for bold adventures and a large nose. It premiered at Telluride last year, had a weeklong LA theatrical run in Dec. and garnered an Oscar nomination for Costume Design (and BAFTA nom for Outstanding British Film of the Year). It’s 86% Certified Fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

When filmmaker Joe Wright was first invited to see a workshop of Cyrano, a new musical adaptation of the Edmond Rostand play, he thought he already knew the material. He grew up reading and relishing the original Cyrano de Bergerac, and still admits with a faint smile that the first thing he thinks of when he hears that name is the character’s big nose—that nose, plus the character’s even bigger mind and sense of pride.
Yet when actress Haley Bennett invited him to her theatrical debut in a little workshop production in Connecticut, Wright saw something new: a Cyrano who really lived the character’s encumbrances. A Cyrano played by Peter Dinklage.
“I went along and was shocked to find myself somewhere around the end of Act III weeping my eyes out, and I still had two acts to go,” Wright tells us years later and on...

Kelvin Harrison Jr. feels like one hit film away from being a full-fledged movie star. In Joe Wright’s Cyrano, the young actor shines as Christian, a handsome soldier who pines for Roxanne but lacks the words to express his feelings. Luckily, he has Cyrano.
Lucky for us, Harrison Jr. has plenty to say without any help. And quite eloquently I might add. The Film Stage was lucky enough to speak with the actor ahead of the release of Cyrano, opening this weekend in theaters. We dish on getting back to work after a long quarantine break, figuring out how to mesh competing working styles between himself and his director, and coming into a project as the new guy and figuring out how to get comfortable.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Sting has become the latest elder rocker to cash in his songwriting catalog, selling his back output to Universal Music for a reported $300 million.
In doing so, the 70-year-old Sting joins several such recent sales by artists, including Sony buying Bruce Springsteen’s songwriting catalog and recorded music copyrights for an estimated $550 million in December. Earlier last year, David Bowie’s estate sold his publishing catalog to Warner Chappell Music for $250 million.
Sting’s catalog includes hits like “Roxanne,” “Every Breath You Take,” and “Message in a Bottle,” songs written for his solo career and for The Police. Universal Music already owns his recorded music catalog.
The copyrights to more than 600 songs and future royalties on the catalog are included.
“I am delighted to have Jody and the team at Umpg curate and manage my song catalog,” Sting said in a news release, referring to Universal Music Publishing Group CEO Jody Gerson.

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

From stage to screen, there have been many adaptations of Edmond Rostand’s elegantly lyrical Cyrano de Bergerac. British director Joe Wright is the latest to step up to the mark and put his musical twist on the opening film from the very first Red Sea International Film Festival and manages to stay respectful of the original author’s vision.
Based on the stage musical by Erica Schmidt, Peter Dinklage and Hayley Bennett take on the roles of Cyrano and Roxanne respectively, reprising their roles from previous stage adaptations. Wright has erased Cyrano’s glaring humongous nose flaw and uses Dinklage’s height as Cyrano’s major insecurity and it works flawlessly well thanks to Dinklage’s charm and magnificent brilliance.
Set in the 17th century, there is an understated sophistication with just a hint of clownery as Cyrano, a poetic genius and master swordsman dotes on his unrequited love for childhood friend Roxanne.

MGM has released the debut trailer for "Cyrano," the musical twist on the classic French love story hailing from period piece master Joe Wright and starring "Game of Thrones" icon Peter Dinklage as the lovesick poet Cyrano de Bergerac.
What is the twist? Well for one, in the original play by Edmond Rostand as well as subsequent film adaptations including Steve Martin's contemporary version "Roxanne," Cyrano is typically portrayed as a man with a grotesquely long nose, but here the source of his insecurity is dwarfism. Also, even though the play is written in verse it...

English audiences have long been partial to Romeo and Juliet, but in this critic’s outside-the-box opinion, Edmond Rostand’s “Cyrano de Bergerac” is the more romantic play. For starters, its tragedy hinges not on teenage impatience and suicide but deep, long-unrequited affection. Convinced that his physical appearance makes him unworthy of his beloved Roxanne, the chivalrous Cyrano dares not express his ardor directly, ultimately taking his secret to the grave. And yet, Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers is told and retold infinitely more often than Rostand’s.
On those occasions when “Cyrano de Bergerac” is performed in English, it’s often stripped of its verse or played for laughter and farce (à la 1987’s “Roxanne”), whereas Joe Wright’s splendid new adaptation presents “Cyrano” as 21st-century MGM musical. By enlisting Bryce and Aaron Dessner of the National to compose the songs — lovely, wistful pop ballads for which Matt Berninger...

Arizona Zervas’ debut single “Roxanne” is four-times platinum in America and has more than a billion streams worldwide — but he started out as an unsigned artist self-releasing via DistroKid. That was 2019, when the DIY trend and the might of independent, non-label distributors became acutely clear to the music industry.
Now, DistroKid ingests and processes 35,000 new songs every day, which is “significantly more than any other distributor,” the company announced on Friday. (To put that in perspective: Spotify gets about 60,000 new tracks a day in total, both from labels and independent distributors.

For the last month, amid the usual teen flicks and true-crime shows, an erotic drama has sat at the top of Netflix’s list of most popular offerings. That film, 365 Days (365 Dni) — which movie critics have called a Polish 50 Shades of Grey — has garnered an intense, if controversial, reaction on social media, and it’s now sending a spate of new artists to the top of music charts to boot.

In early March, the veteran A&r Chris Anokute was listening to a SoundCloud link from an aspiring artist. The track came to an end, and the platform’s algorithm automatically queued up Curtis Waters’ “Freckles.” “I felt like he was telling my story,” says Anokute, who worked with Katy Perry at her hit-making peak and now runs an entertainment company called Young Forever Inc. “I became a fan immediately.”
The chance SoundCloud encounter was timely: Anokute became Waters’ manager before the May release of “Stunnin’,” a beach-party ready slab...
