Before she was one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Julia Roberts was apparently subject to on-set mistreatment by the late director Herb Ross. Ross, who died in 2001, directed Roberts in one of her earliest hits, the heartfelt 1989 drama "Steel Magnolias." When the movie hit theaters, Roberts was just four months away from becoming a major celebrity thanks to the success of "Pretty Women." But in a recent interview with Vulture, her "Steel Magnolias" costar says Roberts, then in her early 20s, was subject to tough treatment by Ross.
"Herb was very, very, very hard on Julia," Sally Field told the outlet in February. "If you ever talk to Julia, she'll tell you." She continued: "We would all rally around Julia, because she was the baby. She was sort of the newcomer." In the film, Roberts plays Shelby, the daughter to Field's M'Lynn who suffers from diabetes. Years after the tragic death of Julia Roberts’ half-sister Nancy Motes, damaging accusations from Motes’ grieving fiancé John Dilbeck still threaten to tarnish the Oscar winner’s reputation.
Motes, a dog trainer, died by suicide at age 37 in February 2014 after years of turmoil involving Roberts. As per Dailymail, in her suicide note, Motes directly blamed the Hollywood icon for “bullying” her about her weight and causing her deep depression.
What does Nancy Motes’ fiancé allege Julia Roberts did? Julia Roberts in Steel Magnolias
According to The Sun, in an interview, Dilbeck doubled down on his previous claims that Julia Roberts intimidated Motes and deliberately kept her from spending time with their ailing mother Betty Lou Motes in her final years.
Dilbeck stated: “Julia always felt that Nancy had her time with their mother, now it’s her turn, as if she was a toy or animal…There should be no Betty and Nancy.

The character of Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch) was introduced in Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Dr. Marcus had invented a revolutionary terraforming technology called the Genesis Wave which could be fired into a planet and rearrange the entire world's ecosystem to make it livable. In "Khan," the technology was still untested, and Dr. Marcus was searching for a life-free planet -- sans even scant microbes -- to terraform. With her was her bitter son David (Merritt Butrick) who expressed quite openly how much he hated the formalism and military underpinnings of Starfleet. He would rather carry out scientific experiments with his mother in peace.
It would eventually be revealed that Dr. Marcus was an old lover of Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) and that David was actually Kirk's long-lost son. "Star Trek II" was at least partially devoted to Kirk reconnecting with Dr. Marcus,...

Julia Roberts is an icon of the romantic-comedy genre, but there’s one famous rom-com the Oscar-winner happened to turn down: Nora Ephron’s 1998 classic “You’ve Got Mail.” Roberts revealed the scoop during a recent appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”
Ephron’s film memorably paired Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the story of business rivals unaware they are falling in love with each other online. “You’ve Got Mail” marked the third Hanks-Ryan romantic comedy after “Joe Versus the Volcano” (1990) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), the latter title also being directed by Ephron. Had Roberts taken the role, it would’ve extended her 1990s rom-com streak that already included hits like “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997).

"Alien" is a watershed horror and science-fiction film; many have tried to recapture its foreboding magic but director Ridley Scott is confident no one can beat his classic.
The film follows the seven-person crew of the space mining vessel Nostromo; in the 22nd century, space travel is the job of regular working Joes. They pick up a distress signal and, in investigating, pick up an eighth passenger: the titular beast, a phallic and half-cybernetic horror spawned from a human (specifically John Hurt's Kane) but utterly devoid of humanity. The alien blends into the leaky, industrial hull of the Nostromo, and as it picks off the crew one by one, their goal shifts from destroying it to escaping it.
Next year marks the 45th birthday of "Alien," but it still holds up no matter its age. However, in the decades since its release, more than half the cast has passed on.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has pushed the boundaries of comedy many times over the years. Some controversial episodes featured blackface, others included homophobic slurs, and one included an homage to the beloved 1990 rom-com, "Pretty Woman." The film is fondly remembered as one of Julia Roberts' breakout roles following "Mystic Pizza" and "Steel Magnolias." It is lauded as a romantic rags-to-riches fairytale, a modern Cinderella if you will — but the "Sunny" creators had a slightly different take on the premise.

By the time Pretty Woman was released, Julia Roberts was already one of Hollywood’s top up-and-coming actresses, having earned an Oscar nomination for her role in Steel Magnolias. But, at the time Pretty Woman started filming, Steel Magnolias had yet to be released, and Roberts’s standing as a box-office draw was not yet certain. Of course, Pretty Woman wound up being the film that cemented Roberts’s status in Hollywood, as she earned a second consecutive Oscar nomination and, more importantly, Pretty Woman became a huge hit, spending four months in the Top 10 of the U.S. box office. During that run, we spoke to Roberts, who admitted that she was a little surprised by the movie’s success, because so much of it was made up as they went along. If watching a movie can be compared to taking your emotions for a walk, then sad films challenge audiences with a full-on sprint. Since before Rose said goodbye to Jack or even Bambi lost his mother, tragedy has played a vital role in cinema’s most well-loved stories of every ilk.
For romance, the possibility of heartbreak raises the stakes, pitting lover against lover or, worse still, lovers against time in dazzling depictions of humanity’s enduring quest for security and acceptance. “Titanic,” “A Star is Born,” “Moonlight,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Up,” and countless other legendary titles have crafted couples so heart-rendingly believable that their joyous reunions and painful partings have provided powerful parallels to our own.
Epic tales of war and survival position total devastation similarly, dangling all-consuming grief and loss like narratively juicy carrots motivating the plodding agony of movies from “War Horse” to “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

If “Barbie” tells us anything, it’s that a movie doesn’t have to be gay to be, well, gay. So what makes a movie gay if it isn’t explicitly? Cast a few top-shelf gay icons in there — your Bette Middlers, your Joan Crawfords, your Faye Dunaways playing Joan Crawford — and especially have them reparteeing bitchy lines tearing each other to pieces, and have an aesthetic that’s outre and unironically camp, and you’ve got the winning-formula starter-pack for something deliciously fabulous and queer, even if not by intentional design.
Some films have gotten swept up into the queer canon by virtue of their unintentional awfulness or arguable quality while others actually push forward the cinematic medium to create something that stands the tests of time and the weathers of queer folks and their mercurial tastes. Dolly Parton typically creates wholesome songs that appeal to the masses. She rarely expresses any divisive or controversial messages, but sometimes she makes her voice loud. One track she based on a true story stirred the pot, as many weren’t happy about the message she was promoting.
Dolly Parton’s ‘Just Because I’m a Woman’ sparked controversy
“Just Because I’m a Woman” is the title track from Parton’s 1968 album. The song is about a woman who is questioning why she is being judged for her sexual past while her boyfriend did the same thing. While this double standard is a common point of contention in today’s world, it was daring for unmarried women to speak about their sexual history in the 1960s.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Parton said the song was based on a true story. Her husband asked her if she had had sex before they met.

This post contains spoilers for the seventh episode of "Yellowjackets" season 2.
Misty Quigley (Samantha Hanratty) is a bit of an odd duck. I recognize that may be a bit of an understatement for the girl who destroyed a crashed plane's black box, went full "Misery" on her crush, and accidentally yeeted her best friend off a cliff. "But Yellowjackets" fans love to describe Misty in the most judgemental, prescriptive terms, seemingly unable to talk about the character's complexities without diagnosing her. Is she a sociopath? A psychopath? Something else entirely? It's not my place to say, but I do know this: she's an odd duck.
In the latest episode of "Yellowjackets," she's also just a scared girl who's grieving. Misty has never been more relatable to me than when she stood at the edge of the cliff, sobbing to Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) not to jump because she's lost so much already.

The start of any month brings with it batches of movies added to streaming services’ libraries. As of this week, Netflix has “Girl, Interrupted,” “Steel Magnolias” and “Traffic,” HBO Max has “Blue Valentine,” “Hustle & Flow” and “Parasite,” and Hulu has “Atonement” and “Boogie Nights.” A handful of newer titles are also premiering digitally. First up is a spellbinding thriller featuring some of Hollywood’s hottest young actors.
The contender to watch this week: “How to Blow Up a Pipeline”
Neon picked up this eco-thriller out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, after which it won raves for its gripping portrait of young DIY environmental activists who band together to destroy oil pipes in West Texas. "Yellowjackets" spoilers follow.
We first got hints that Misty was a fan of musicals in season 1 of "Yellowjackets" when she listened to the "Overture" and "The Music of the Night" from "The Phantom of the Opera." She also teased Nat by listening to "Mr. Mistoffelees" from "Cats" while driving. In season 2, we discover that Misty's relationship with musicals has a lot to do with Crystal, a theatre nerd who also survived the plane crash.
Walter, the other half of her detective duo, also enjoys musicals. During their road trip to find the cult, Walter gives Misty a set of cassette tapes that include "Singin' in the Rain," "The Wizard of Oz," "Les Miserables," "Rent," and more. Misty dismisses "Starlight Express" before she turns on "Rainbow Tour" from "Evita": "Oh, let's tell the story of Cinderella, except every character's a train? Ugh." This article contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2 episode 5.
There's something not quite right about Misty Quigley (Samantha Hanratty/Christina Ricci). She's a stereotypical nerd; book smart but socially ostracized with no clue how to relate to others. As the Yellowjackets' equipment manager, she is only technically part of the champion soccer team, but that still means she's on the plane to nationals when it goes down over the Canadian wilderness.
As we learn more about Misty, it becomes apparent that her unpopularity isn't just because she's awkward. Something is very wrong with Misty Quigley, as she relishes "nurturing" the incapacitated coach Ben Scott (Steven Krueger), with one attempt to do so ending with her accidentally poisoning all the other survivors with psychedelic mushrooms. In the present, she's an elder-care nurse and has been shown denying her patients treatment if they displease her. I've compared her to Annie Wilkes from "Misery" before and like her,...

This post contains spoilers from the latest episode of "Yellowjackets."
From Natalie's chicken-killing tips to Jeff's hatred of strawberry lube to Misty's "I want my lawyer" cake, season 2 of "Yellowjackets" has already delivered dozens of delightful little moments -- which is especially impressive considering it's a horror story about cannibal teens. The show has so far managed to strike a rare tonal balance, often delivering dark humor, endearing character-driven moments, and disturbing new developments over the course of a single scene.
This week's episode was no exception, as a wilderness baby shower for Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) took a turn when Lottie's (Courtney Eaton) occult symbol-emblazoned blanket seemingly caused a flock of birds to slam into the cabin and die. A strangely sweet scene turned sinister, but before "Yellowjackets" dipped its toes back into the (possibly) supernatural, it let the teammates have a moment of genuine celebration. In addition...

Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers from “Digestif,” the third episode of “Yellowjackets” Season 2, now streaming on Showtime.
From destroying the team’s only way out of the wilderness in the past to conducting citizen detective investigations in the present, Misty Quigley’s ambitions are always an attempt to further her relationships — switching from being a misfit, and an unknowing laughingstock — and to become a vital member of the soccer team at the center of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”
As played by actor Samantha Hanratty, in “Digestif,” teenage Misty outdoes even her Season 1 antics, with one particularly eccentric breakout moment. While the girls grapple with their latest decision, to feast on their late teammate Jackie, they prepare for the birth of Shauna’s (Sophie Nélisse) baby. They decide to celebrate, and throw Shauna an impromptu baby shower. But with limited resources, Misty, with the guidance from her new “bestie” Crystal (Nuha Jes Izman...

By just about any metric, Dolly Parton is a living legend. The singer-songwriter has been killing it in country music ever since she made her 1967 debut album. And she’s continued to make a cultural impact ever since. However, one of the things Parton’s fans love most about her is her openness and honesty. For instance, she recently revealed a secret about her custom wigs.
Dolly Parton is known for being a fashion icon
In addition to her music career, Parton has spread her wings into a variety of other fields. She has appeared in several hit movies, including 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Steel Magnolias. She has become a successful businesswoman too, mostly through The Dollywood Company, though she also produces projects such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Dolly Parton appreciates that some of Miley Cyrus’s antics are for “shock value.”
The country music icon is no stranger to it herself, though she thinks her honorary goddaughter is at an age where “she can afford” to surprise or even upset an audience. And one thing she said she’ll “never ever” do is “bad-mouth” the “Flowers” singer, adding that’s a promise she’ll keep “no matter what she does.”

“I didn’t happen on the scene as a purebred,” says Sally Field. “I was the runt of the litter.” Having led three sitcoms by the time she was 28, she first gained notice as a dramatic actor in 1976’s Sybil, for which she earned her first Emmy and, she says, her first chance to put her talent to good use. An accomplished film career ensued, one that saw Field balancing dramas (she won Oscars for lead roles in 1979’s Norma Rae and 1984’s Places in the Heart, plus a nom for her supporting turn in 2012’s Lincoln) and comedies (Smokey and the Bandit, Steel Magnolias, Soapdish, Mrs. Doubtfire and this year’s 80 for Brady). She has also returned to TV multiple times, winning Emmys for a guest spot on ER and a lead role on Brothers & Sisters, the latter also earning her a SAG Award. This year, she will...

Tom Brady might have retired (again) at age 45, but the cast of the new movie 80 for Brady is still going strong. Rita Moreno, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin star in the film about a quartet of friends who are determined to see the legendary quarterback play in the 2017 Super Bowl. The movie is inspired by a real-life “Over 80 for Brady” fan club, but how old are the actors who play the main characters? All but one has hit her 80th birthday.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" went on quite a wild journey. The 1992 film, while not a total flop, didn't do too well at the box office. Reviews were mixed at the time, but largely skewed negative and in the years since its release, the movie has not been looked upon kindly — though honestly, it's better than you remember. The film's writer, Joss Whedon, famously hated what director Fran Rubel Kuzui did with his script, so he jumped at the chance to make a "Buffy" TV show.
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" remains my very favorite series, despite the incredibly upsetting revelations about Whedon's abusive on-set behavior. It's fascinating to consider the undeniable impact of a show that rose from the ashes of a failed movie. Longtime fans will recognize Kuzui's name, whether they've seen the film or not. Sam Raimi's 1990 film "Darkman" may be classified as a superhero film, but it bears just as much genre resemblance to a 1930s Universal monster movie. The titular Darkman, Dr. Westlake (Liam Neeson), barely survives and explosion and facial acid bath, leaving only a small fraction of his skin left unburned. Fleeing the hospital, sans a lot of his face, Dr. Westlake begins operating out of a dank basement, working to construct a mask of synthetic skin that will allow him to appear as his did prior to the accident. Synthetic skin, you see was his field of expertise. His realistic mask, however, begins to melt and degrade if it's in direct sunlight for too long, hence his need to be a Darkman.
The aforementioned explosion/acid bath was done by goons working for the crime boss Robert G. Durant (an excellent Larry Drake) who was looking for some incriminating documents uncovered by Dr.

Carole Cook, a protege of Lucille Ball who would become a familiar face through appearances on Ball’s TV shows, movies like The Incredible Mr. Limpet and Sixteen Candles and stage musicals 42nd Street and Romantic Comedy, died today of heart failure in Beverly Hills, California, just three days before her 99th birthday.
Her death was announced by husband Tom Troupe.
Born Mildred Frances Cook in Abilene, Texas, Cook made her Broadway debut as a replacement in 1954’s Threepenny Opera. After moving to Los Angeles, she became a favorite of Ball’s, who suggested the name spelling of Carole in honor of movie star Carole Lombard. “Like her, you have the same healthy disrespect for all things in general,” Ball told Cook.
Cook would subsequently make guest appearances on Ball’s sitcoms The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy. The two remained life-long friends, with Ball serving as matron-of-honor at Cook’s 1964 wedding to Troupe.

With the 80th Golden Globe Awards coming up Tuesday, a collection of showbiz veterans are poised to potentially receive some Golden Globes hardware after a lengthy time out of the winner’s circle — in a handful of cases, several decades.
Since it always helps to have a scorecard, here is yours:
Henry Winkler (nominated as Best TV Comedy/Drama Supporting Actor for “Barry”): He has seven Golden Globe nominations to his credit and won twice, but the last time was in 1978 for “Happy Days.” The 45-year victory drought is historic enough, but we also know he would be the first actor ever to win comedy lead and supporting trophies. Steve Martin (Best TV Comedy Actor for “Only Murders in the Building”): Martin has seven Globes noms to his credit but never won, dating back to the film “Pennies from Heaven” in 1982 — a mere 41 years ago. Some might say he’s a tad overdue.

As she said when she collected her second Oscar for Best Actress, Sally Field hasn’t had an orthodox career. Plucked out of a drama class when she was barely out of high school Field was cast as the perky surfer girl Gidget for one season on TV. She then did three seasons in the preposterous series “The Flying Nun.” Not exactly the kind of work that would portend a serious new actress had arrived. In fact at the age of 24, Field found herself to be somewhat of an industry joke.
While many sitcom stars who fell into obscurity, Field managed to turn her career around. She began working with famed acting teacher Lee Strasberg and slowly things started to change for her. She found work in a series of well regarded TV movies and won an Emmy for the miniseries “Sybil” about a child abuse victim that developed 16 different...

Plot: Spoiler Alert tells the love story of Michael Ausiello and Kit Cowan and the heartbreaking turn it takes with Kit’s battle with terminal cancer.
Review: Tragedy and romance go hand in hand in Hollywood. From the Golden Age on, the lovestruck couple facing impossible odds can often connect with audiences on a deeply emotional level. When you look at films like Beaches or Steel Magnolias, the appeal is the drama and the cast. And now, in the new movie Spoiler Alert, we have a romantic tale that is very aware of previous ones that have come before it. The film stars Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge as two men who fall deeply in love and share their life together before tragedy comes calling. It’s a heartfelt film with fine performances from the two leads and co-stars, Sally Field and Bill Irwin.
Michael Ausiello (Parsons) is a nice guy who writes about television.

Julia Roberts stole our hearts in the late 1980s. First, with her role in Mystic Pizza, followed by her 1989 role in Steel Magnolias with its ensemble cast and heartbreaking moments. However, it was not until she starred as the uncouth, poorly-dressed hooker in Pretty Woman that she stole the show. It was the role of a lifetime, the makeover that made us all over, and one of the greatest movies of all time. She cemented her role in Hollywood as the best of the best; nothing has changed in the past 32 years. She is an icon, and we
