This week Silent Scream looks at the dark obsession student Jim Martin had with Jane Vogler (Trenka) and how it almost turned deadly. Jane Vogler was an adopted Korean scholarship student studying in Minnesota, but her world started to turn a bit crazy when a fellow student made unwanted advances towards her. Jim Martin was a bit of a awkward character and when Jane turned him down he continued his obsession with her via a video project he was working on. One night the family were alerted to a noise in the basement and her father spotted Martin running away...read more...

Growing up as far as I was concerned, there were two kinds of kids, Nightmare Kids and Friday Kids. It all seemed to hinge on what you happened to see first. For me it was a Friday the 13th marathon on USA’s Up All Night. I would never be the same.
In the summer of 1980 a group of counselors are trying to reopen Camp Crystal Lake. Camp Cook, Annie, is hitchhiking her way to the camp when she has her throat slit. The other counselors, including a studly Kevin Bacon, are being picked off one by one. The killer doesn’t make their presence known until only Alice (Adrienne King) is left.
It’s amazing to think the hockey mask that launched a thousand ships has such humble beginnings. Director Sean Cunningham saw Halloween and wanted to make one just like it. But then again so did everyone else.

Ahhhh. ‘Enjoy the Silence’. Or, ‘The Sound of Silence’. Maybe, ‘Silent All These Years’. Or maybe, if you’re that Richard Marx fan (and he knows you still exist), it’s a ‘Silent Scream’. Any which way you look at it, when you live alone, you get used to the sound of silence. Alone with your thoughts. Thoughts like, ‘I’ll pretend I’m a spy under house arrest’ or ‘when I’m cleaning the kitchen, I’ll pretend I’m a forensic detective’. Thoughts like that.
People who live with, well, other people, have to be all grown up and talk about bills and the weather and stuff. If you live alone, you don’t have to do any of that. Not getting dressed today? So what? Forgot to eat again? Who cares? Beer o’clock starting at approximately 8.37am? Not a problem (apart from the crumbling descent...

The season premiere of Gordon Ramsay's "Hell's Kitchen" is June 4, and PETA has a bone to pick with Gordon Ramsay's screaming... sort of. The animal rights group has introduced a new video (see below) that shows that while Gordon Ramsay may be able to scream as much as he wants, the screams of fish are silent. To draw a parallel between Ramsay's screams and the silent screams of fish, PETA has written a letter to Fox asking the network to run its "groundbreaking new fish empathy public service announcement."
"It may be easier to identify with our favorite "Hell's Kitchen" contestants than with the fish they fillet and sauté, but fish feel pain and fear, and they suffer enormously when they are impaled, crushed, suffocated, or cut open and gutted, all while they're fully conscious ," says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange in a press release emailed to The Huffington Post.

The Silent House is a Uruguayan chiller from debut writer/director Gustavo Hernandez. A handful of this week's releases came out a day early -- on the 23rd instead of the 24th -- but even so, there aren't a lot of familiar names to choose from. The picks of the week are two Blu-rays: My Bloody Valentine (Special Edition) and The Monster Squad (20th Anniversary Edition). If you don't have the tech yet for those, then read on for what you might want to put on your shopping list.
Illustrated film Godkiller releases its second episode on the 24th, and fans of classic horror won't want to miss out on the 1980 slasher Silent Scream. Japanese film lovers have a lot to pick from among Devilman, Ichi 1, and Blood: The Last Vampire (the animated version). Take a few moments to look over the rest -- there's bound to be one hidden gem among them!

It’s hard to surprise people when putting together a list of the best slasher movies and, in the interest of doing so, I thought I’d exclude all the genre mainstays from the list. This list doesn’t necessarily represent the “ten best”, but rather some of the slasher subgenre’s more ‘overlooked’ offerings.
10. The Mutilator (1985)
It can be argued that this film’s greatest asset is its amazing tag line (By Pick, By Sword, By Axe, Bye Bye!), but that’s doing a bit of disservice to director Buddy Cooper’s only attempt to run with the slasher big dogs.
First we’ve got one of the most preposterous killer motivations in the subgenre: a child, cleaning his father’s gun in an attempt to gleam his daddy’s affections, accidentally shoots his mother dead. Dad comes home, flips his lid and viola! Instant slasher!
If you track down the uncut version,...

Lol did the company Code Red change their name to Scorpion Releasing to wash the stink of their past failures away? I'm not really sure, but all the other horror websites are raving about the 1980 slasher film Silent Scream finally coming to DVD, which I agreed was exciting news, until I noticed this on Shock Till You Drop; "Formed by Code Red's Walt Olsen, Scorpion Releasing will debut Silent Scream on DVD on November 24th." Code Red is kind of notorious with slasher fans for being a company that tends not to deliver on their promised DVD releases (Brain Hammer Vs. Code Red), but I will just assume this one will actually see the light of day on Nov 24. However, don't be surprised if this new company turns out to a dud like Code Red. Here is the press release everyone is posting:...

Children Of Bodom, the esteemed Finnish Heavy Metal band that features frontman and modern day Guitar Hero Alexi Laiho will release a full album of cover tunes containing 17 impressive remakes of the group’s all-time favorite songs this fall. Titled Skeletons in the Closet, the record will drop on September 22, 2009 via Spinefarm Records / Fontana International.
Long known for employing a lighthearted musical modus operandi despite both a weighty work ethic and no joke dedication to its craft, Children Of Bodom (or Cob) has joined the ranks of the world’s finest heavy music acts over the course of the last decade. In Finland, Children Of Bodom has released three consecutive albums that have debuted at number one on the Finnish album charts and the band's latest album, 2008's Blooddrunk landed at #22 on Billboard’s Top 200. Cob has been recording cover songs since the early days of its career, some expectedly heavy ("Silent Scream" by Slayer,...

Vikram K Kumar has an interesting premise for making 13B, simultaneously released in Hindi and Tamil with minor cast rejigs in the two versions. During the 2006 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Aiadmk promised 20 kg of free rice every month, ten sovereigns of gold for the daughter's wedding and a computer free to every eligible family if elected. Dmk countered it by saying every eligible family would also get a free TV set. As we all know, the TV won. That, says Vikram, short film Silent Scream had won a National Award in 1999, think of developing a story with the ubiquitous TV set at the centrestage.
