With production now underway on Noah Baumbach’s next feature for Netflix in New York (before heading to London), the full ensemble has been unveiled. While currently untitled, reports indicate the drama, described as a “funny and emotional coming-of-age film about adults,” could be titled Jay Kelly.
Joining George Clooney and Adam Sandler in the feature are Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Greta Gerwig, Jim Broadbent, Patrick Wilson, Emily Mortimer, Lars Eidinger, Grace Edwards, Patsy Ferran, Isla Fisher, Thaddea Graham, Josh Hamilton, Eve Hewson, Stacy Keach, Nicôle Lecky, Louis Partridge, Alba Rohrwacher, and Charlie Rowe.
Aside from Gerwig, of course, the film marks a number of reunions for Baumbach, including his Marriage Story star Dern, his White Noise star Lars Eidinger, his Kicking and Screaming star Josh Hamilton, and he also wrote the script with Mortimer. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing the film, which we expect will get a 2025 release.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Blonde Chick Underestimates Her Powers in Icy Tribute to Being Single
Cinematic homonyms are something of a small passion for me.
Whether it’s British spies vs. American superheroes in “The Avengers,” or Noah Baumbach’s “Kicking and Screaming” not starring Will Ferrell, movies that share the same title are fun oddities that recall anecdotes of auditoriums mistakenly shown the wrong films. (Shout out to the “Peter Rabbit” patrons who bore witness to a trailer for “Hereditary” in 2018; still beats me how that one happened.)

Josh Hutcherson may have gotten his big break when he was cast as Peeta Mellark in the Hunger Games franchise, but he'd actually been a staple in Hollywood since he was very young. His most recent starring role is in the horror film "Five Nights at Freddy's," based on the video game of the same name, but he's been in tons of other movies as well, dating all the way back to his days as a child actor.
Way before he was running from demonic animatronic characters in "Five Nights at Freddy's," Hutcherson was just a kid working his way up. He had minor roles in 2004's "The Polar Express" and 2005's "Kicking and Screaming," and one of his first major starring roles was in the 2007 film "Bridge to Terabithia," which he starred in when he was 13 years old. You Hurt My Feelings. At a Friday-night showing of Nicole Holofcener’s latest film You Hurt My Feelings (2023), I noticed several people who had come with their moms. Holofcener makes great films to watch with your mom, if her definition of a great film is something that will make her laugh but won't treat her like an idiot. Holofcener’s stories are smart, funny and heartwarming, a little bit sad in the right places, sophisticated but palatable. Invariably, a great actress plays the lead—Catherine Keener, for the most part, though Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars both in Enough Said (2013) and You Hurt My Feelings. In the film, Beth (Louis-Dreyfus), a writer, overhears Don (Tobias Menzies) telling her brother-in-law that he doesn't like her latest novel. It hurts her feelings. She dry retches on the sidewalk, sobs to her sister, and swears she will never look at her husband the same way again.

Endeavor Group Holdings has taken a minority stake in Velvet Hammer Media, a non-scripted production company co-founded by Jennifer O’Connell and Rebecca Quinn in February.
With a focus on both premium and global formats, Vhm has secured multiple series greenlights with a range of streamers and networks, including “The Big Bakeover” for The CW, Roku’s “Empty Nest Refresh” and others not yet announced. O’Connell and Quinn serve as executive producers on all projects, with Vhm also providing production services.
Vhm also has development deals and projects in the works at Netflix and NBCUniversal, among other platforms. Development executive and producer Nick Alarcon joined Vhm as vice president. As we creep towards summer, Netflix has a hot new list of fresh content, including the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the sophomore season of ‘Human Resources” and the highly anticipated sixth season of “Black Mirror.”
Kicking off the start of the month on mega streamer are lots of family-friendly goodies like both “Nanny McPhee” and “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and the “Angry Birds Movie.” But the adults won’t be left out of the conversation, as more mature flicks and series like “Jarhead,” “Funny People” and “We’re the Millers” are also hitting the platform this month.
And it wouldn’t be Netflix without its originals. “Take Care of Maya,” “Extraction 2” and the Sarah Snook-led “Run Rabit Run” will land on the site in June. And even if this isn’t enough to get you watching, Netflix will be streaming its Tudum festival on Saturday,...

Exclusive: Marriage Story filmmaker Noah Baumbach has set his next project, but it’s not for the screen.
We understand the writer-director is working on his first book, a memoir, which is currently untitled, and has been snapped up in what we hear was a highly competitive auction.
Knopf has taken North American rights. Jordan Pavlin, Knopf SVP and Editor-in-Chief acquired the book from Byrd Leavall and Albert Lee at United Talent Agency. Knopf will publish the book in hardcover, e-book, and in audio by Penguin Random House. UK Commonwealth rights were sold by Sophie Lambert of C&w on behalf of Byrd Leavell and Albert Lee, and acquired, at auction, by Jocasta Hamilton Publisher at John Murray.
Specific details about the book are being kept under wraps, but we understand the work will, in some way, chart the Barbie co-scribe’s life and career through key experiences and his relationship with cinema.

Who’s ready to party?
Parker Posey’s beloved 1995 coming-of-age comedy “Party Girl” celebrates a 4K restoration with a national tour to mark the 28th anniversary of the film. “Party Girl” kicks off in New York City at the IFC Center on April 28, followed by a live Q&a with lead star Posey. The film simultaneously debuts in Los Angeles at Glendale Laemmle Theatre and Landmark Westwood Theatre also on April 28, with a live Q&a with film director Daisy von Scherler Mayer.
In the classic film, a 20-something, irresponsible party girl is bailed out of jail by her librarian godmother. To repay the loan, she starts working at the library and gradually turns her life around.
“We made this movie for ‘the kids’ — as we called them — young people from small towns, who had big dreams, and who weren’t, for whatever reason, conforming to the status quo,” Posey shared with IndieWire.

Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Michael Jackson was scheduled to perform at the O2 Arena in 2009, although the event was later canceled. When Miley Cyrus headlined the same venue, she was sure to mention the “Thriller” singer in her own original song. Here’s what we know about this performance — and Cyrus’ thoughts on Jackson.

Cyrus has some impressive performances under her belt, recently hosting a New Year’s Eve Special with Dolly Parton and earning a Grammy nomination in the Best Pop Vocal Album category for Bangerz. In 2009, the singer headlined a concert at the O2 Arena in London.
This concert included songs from Cyrus’ Hannah Montana fame, like “The Climb,” “Spotlight,” and “Let’s Get Crazy.” There were some references to other artists in Cyrus’ setlist.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Sarah Michelle Gellar is talking about how Dolly Parton was a producer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
During a visit to The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Gellar was asked about Parton being an uncredited producer on the show she starred in for seven seasons.
“Yes, little known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer,” she said on the NBC late-night show. “We never saw her [but] we’d get Christmas gifts in the beginning that would have our name, and I would think, ‘She doesn’t even know who I am.’ And then one day, someone asked her about it, and she complimented the show and my performance. I was like, ‘Oh, I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.'”
Sandollar Productions, which Parton started with her then-business partner Sandy Gallin, was behind the supernatural drama, alongside Mutant Enemy Productions and 20th Century Fox Television.

Let’s take a look at the distinguished career of writer/director Noah Baumbach, who was Oscar-nominated twice for the film “Marriage Story.” It was his second outing with Netflix, following “The Meyerowitz Stories” starring Adam Sandler and Dustin Hoffman. A third film for the streamer was an adaptation of “White Noise” for 2022, starring his partner Greta Gerwig, a nominee for writing “Little Women” and directing/writing “Lady Bird.”
Baumbach is no stranger to the Oscars, having been nominated for 2005’s “The Squid and the Whale” starring Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney. All of these films are featured in our photo gallery above, which ranks all 10 movies directed by Baumbach from worst to best. Our list also includes “Frances Ha,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Margot at the Wedding,” “Greenberg,” “While We’re Young” and “Mistress America.”...

Following the success of “Marriage Story,” acclaimed filmmaker Noah Baumbach has singed a multi-year deal to write and direct films for Netflix.
Baumbach, an indie stalwart who broke out with the 2005 drama “The Squid and the Whale,” will exclusively work with the streaming giant in the feature space for the duration of the deal. The filmmaker is repped by UTA.
His next project is an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s iconic American novel “White Noise,” widely reported to be his partner Greta Gerwig’s return to acting following the success of her writer-director effort on the adaptation of “Little Women.” Adam Driver, who earned a best actor Oscar nomination for his role in Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” will reportedly star alongside Gerwig.

“When I started in the film industry I dreamed of having a home. It took me about 25 years, but it was worth the wait,” Baumbach. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be making movies with Ted and Scott and everyone at Netflix, who are wonderful collaborators and friends and family.”
Baumbach’s first film with Netflix was The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Emma Thompson, which premiered to rave reviews at the 2017 Cannes International Film Festival. He followed that up with the highly acclaimed Marriage Story, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern, which garnered six Academy Award nominations, including two for Baumbach, and a win for Dern.

Frances is a dancer by trade, but I think it’s fair to say that throughout Noah Baumbach’s Frances Ha her real art is poor decision making. In that regard, her impromptu trip to Paris is her masterpiece.
The spontaneous journey to France is the quintessential youthful indulgence. “Oh to be so young and free that I could drop everything and jet off to Europe.” Unfortunately for Frances, Baumbach’s films delight in subverting such self-consciously grand gestures. In Kicking and Screaming a character engages in the classic end-of-movie race to the airport only to find he can’t get a last minute ticket. When the cashier offers him a ticket for the following day he deflates and declines. The moment will have passed by then. Frances doesn’t merely run to the airport, she flies to the other side of the Atlantic. As such,...

Let’s take a look at the distinguished career of writer/director Noah Baumbach, who is Oscar-nominated twice for his latest film, “Marriage Story.” Three of his stars also made the cut at the Academy Awards: Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern. It was his second outing with Netflix, following “The Meyerowitz Stories” starring Adam Sandler and Dustin Hoffman.

Baumbach is no stranger to the Oscars, having been nominated for 2005’s “The Squid and the Whale” starring Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney. But this past year has been particularly meaningful since Baumbach and his partner Greta Gerwig were both Oscar-nominated in the screenplay categories (thankfully split up into original and adapted so not against each other).

Netflix is expanding its presence in the Criterion Collection library’s slate of essential films past and present. In addition to the previously announced debut of “Roma” in every cinephile’s favorite home video library, Netflix will now be adding “The Irishman,” “Marriage Story,” “American Factory,” and “Atlantics” to the Criterion Collection. Though Netflix has yet to announce street dates for the newly announced pack of titles, “Roma” will hit Criterion on DVD and Blu-ray February 11, with these four additions set to follow later in 2020.
Martin Scorsese’s gangster epic “The Irishman” will mark the director’s third film to be featured in the Criterion Collection, alongside his swooning Edith Wharton adaptation “The Age of Innocence” and searing epic “The Last Temptation of Christ.” Director Noah Baumbach, meanwhile, can add “Marriage Story” to his preexisting Criterion selections “Frances Ha,” “The Squid and the Whale,” and “Kicking and Screaming.”

Steeped in auto-fiction, crisscrossing between memoir and artifice until the distinction hardly matters, much of Noah Baumbach’s cinema responds to an urge to heal. His 1995 debut feature Kicking and Screaming chronicled a father’s struggle to overcome a post-college days spleen; the 2005 The Squid and the Whale a son surviving his parents’ divorce; Margot at the Wedding (2007) and The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017) focus on dysfunctional families fighting and exorcising feuds and traumas, a theme that’s also traversed many a collaboration between Baumbach and Greta Gerwig—surfacing perhaps most evidently in the 2015 Mistress America. Another study of broken families, Marriage Story feels like treading into familiar turf. Chronologically, it’s a follow-up to The Meyerowitz Stories; thematically, it harkens back to the portrait of a couple’s collapse dissected in The Squid and the Whale—this time told not from a child’s perspective, but from the parents’ own.

Hulu is out with its list of new and expiring content for the month of September, and what better way to beat the back-to-school blues than with a whole bunch of binge-watching.
Among the new goodies coming next month is the 12th episode and season finale of horror anthology series “Into the Dark.” Out Sept. 6, the finale is called “Pure,” and is described as a female coming-of-age horror story in which a group of teenage girls perform a secret ritual at a “Purity Retreat.” When one of them begins to see a “supernatural entity,” a scary question is posed: “What is more dangerous: the demon they’ve unleashed, or the pressure to conform to their fathers’ expectations?” Scary indeed!

“Marriage Story” is the Noah Baumbach movie we’ve been waiting for. It’s better than good; it’s more than just accomplished. After 10 features, released over a quarter century of filmmaking, this, at long last, is Baumbach’s breakthrough into the dramatic stratosphere. , one who shows that he can capture life in all its emotional detail and complexity — and, in the process, make a piercing statement about how our society now works.

The Nantucket Film Festival will honor filmmakers Noah Baumbach and Morgan Neville during the 23rd edition of the island festival that runs June 20-25.

Netflix has released a new trailer and four new posters for their fantastic looking new film The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). The film comes from writer and director Noah Baumbach and it stars Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Adam Driver, Judd Hirsch, Elizabeth Marvel, Grace Van Patten and Emma Thompson.
The film is the "emotional and comic intergenerational tale of adult siblings (Sandler, Stiller, Marvel) contending with the long shadow their strong-willed father (Hoffman) has cast over their lives."
The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) looks a wonderful and comical movie that I would enjoy. I've also enjoyed many of Baumbach's previous films which include Kicking and Screaming, The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding, Greenberg, While We’re Young and Mistress America.
The movie will be released on Netflix on October 13th.

Netflix may be in massive debt, but that hasn’t changed much for the streaming giant, which announced a robust list of new additions today. Todd Haynes’ “Carol” is heading to Netflix, as well as two other masterpieces from provocative auteurs: Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Requiem for a Dream.” As the summer movie season winds down, Netflix has plenty of gems to carry you into fall.
Other titles heading to the streaming service include the entire “Jaws” franchise, Martin Scorsese’s Daniel Day Lewis vehicle “Gangs of New York,” and Noah Baumbach’s “The Squid and the Whale.” Check out the complete list of all the new films joining Netflix in September, 2017 below, including our 7 must-see choices.

When a major artist finally makes it into the Cannes competition slate, despite consistently producing excellent work, the question becomes: what changed? Is it simply belated recognition? Or is the artist somehow pushing themselves in unprecedented ways, creating work deserving of a larger spotlight? Those are questions that one could ask regarding Noah Baumbach, who makes his first appearance at the Cannes Film Festival with The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), despite a filmography that goes back to 1995 with Kicking and Screaming. Oddly enough, the new film—a quiet New York-set drama on various members of the Meyerowitz clan—finds the Manhattan-based director in perfectly comfortable territory, far closer in spirit to his older work than his recent, more adventurous projects with Greta Gerwig. But familiar need not necessarily mean bad. And although it lacks the ambition that one typically associates with a Cannes Competition title (however much or little...

This is the latest installment of a series exploring significant films from the careers of directors showing new work at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
Noah Baumbach characters are almost always enduring growing pains, even if they stopped growing years ago. One of his most defining characteristics as a filmmaker is his ability to create coming-of-age stories for any age group.
‘The Meyerowitz Stories’ First Look: Noah Baumbach and Adam Sandler Compete for the Palme d’Or
“The Meyerowitz Stories,” Baumbach’s first film to screen at the Cannes Film Festival, sounds Baumbachian enough: It centers on an estranged family that convenes in New York for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father. The film stars Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, and Emma Thompson.
Soured relationships and artistic achievement are recurring themes in Baumbach’s work, and are often directly related to the painful transitions that take his...

The Tribeca Film Festival has long boasted hot-ticket events under their “Tribeca Talks” banner, and last night’s hour-long discussion between filmmaker Noah Baumbach and his newly-minted star Dustin Hoffman (who leads the star-studded cast of Baumbach’s next film, the Cannes competitor “The Meyerowitz Stories”) was another insightful entry into one of their best series.
The pair took the stage at New York City’s own Bmcc Tribeca Performing Arts Center to chat about Baumbach’s life and work, and the surprising ways in which he’s changed and evolved as a filmmaker during his two-decade-long career. Her are the best bits (not including a small, but hilarious aside about how Baumbach initially bonded with fellow filmmaker Wes Anderson because they had the same notebook, the kind of detail even those two couldn’t make up).

Potential awards contender produced by Scott Rudin will get day-and-date theatrical release and worldwide streaming launch in late 2017.
Netflix has pulled off the kind of prestige buy more commonly associated with its streaming rival Amazon Studios, swooping on worldwide rights to Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected).
Frequent Netflix collaborator Adam Sandler stars alongside Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Marvel of Homeland and House Of Cards, Grace Van Patten and Emma Thompson.
The plot centres on adult siblings dealing with the influence of their aging father. A producer roster of Scott Rudin, Baumbach, Lila Yacoub and Eli Bush further bolsters the film’s prestige credentials and a day-and-date theatrical and worldwide streaming launch has been earmarked for late 2017.
“Noah Baumbach is an important voice in American filmmaking and his films are always highly anticipated around the world,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos, whose team brokered the deal with Iac Films, said.

A cinematic guide to confronting postgrad malaise.Fox Searchlight Pictures
It’s getting to be that time of year where if you listen closely, you can hear millions of parents asking soon-to-be graduates about their plans for the future. Transitioning out of an academic setting can be tricky. And with it comes a very specific kind of funk; a strange and aimless limbo aggravated by the dreaded…so — now what?
I’ve heard that millennials are adult babies and back in the day dinosaurs walked uphill both ways and payed for their entire tuition with the quarters they earned selling lemonade during the summer. Which is to say: the financial and social pressures shouldered by recent graduates are very real existential threats. Thankfully, small comfort though it may be, the disenchanted former student has more than a few cinematic role models to choose from. The postgrad film, older sibling to the high school coming-of-age-movie, concerns...
