Beautiful Relationship Drama
sushant_v14 September 2018
Thought of posting something after seeing the really low and misleading imdb rating. This movie is much better than what one would expect after seeing the low imdb rating.

Its about a husband wife relationship which is very stagnant and going nowhere. And after the wife suffers kind of a nervous breakdown, the husband makes a very sincere effort to get her back.

This one is a minimalistic movie with less dialogues but very nice cinematography. The mood and atmosphere is laid back, and the lead performances are also very convincing and touching.

...maybe the most beautiful film of them all

This is a very touching drama about a love that silently declines. It´s quiet, it´s sensitive, it´s thoughtful and it shows a warm heart and a cinematic grace. I want to see this on Criterion soon!

A very touching film.

I found Okaeri to be a very touching movie as it emphasised the loneliness that Yuriko feels in her marriage. Okaeri also makes a very strong stand on attitudes to marriage in contemporary Japanese society. One of these attitudes is that the husband's work obligations come before his marriage. This is seen in a scene where Takashi is calling Yuriko to say that he's hoing to be late because he'll be drinking with friends after Yuriko had prepared a meal for him. Another scene is where Yuriko is criticising Takashi for his lack of commitment to their marriage and how she struggles to tell him how lonely she is.
