Less than snappy
TheLittleSongbird10 June 2017
Despite Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and his cartoons being popular and well received at the time, they have been vastly overshadowed over time by succeeding animation characters. It is a shame as, while not cartoon masterpieces, they are fascinating for anybody wanting to see what very old animation looked like.

Not all the Walter Lantz Oswald cartoons are bad, some of them are pretty to very good, but there are far better representations of both Oswald and Lantz. As well as worse, a few of them mainly to be seen for historical interest and with nowhere near enough to watch it more than once. 'Snappy Salesman' is not a patch on the best of the Disney and Winkler eras and is less than snappy.

Sound and synchoronisation is not bad. The music as always is energetic, a couple of gags are fun and Oswald is endearing.

The animation is uneven, though neither among the best or worst looking of the Lantz Oswald cartoons. Some of the backgrounds have good detail, and Oswald's gestures, movements and expressions are remarkably natural. In other parts, it's pretty primitive with a real crudeness in parts and transitions at times are jumpy.

A large problem is that most of the gags are not particularly funny, have less than crisp timing and go on for too long. This is enough to bring to bring 'Snappy Salesman' significantly. The child characters try too hard to be cute and come across as pretty annoying instead, apart from Oswald none of the characters really stand out. As to be expected, the story is flimsy and sometimes pretty dull, even for an Oswald cartoon that rarely have their stories as a strong point.

On the whole, less than snappy and while not awful not particularly impressive. 4/10 Bethany Cox
