Neither snappy or happy

The 26 Little Lulu cartoons made during 1944-1948 (and the two made in the early 60s) were uneven (individually and the series as a general overview) but watchable.

'Snap Happy' is one of the average Little Lulu cartoons, without being one of the best or worst, very much like 'I'm Just Curious' and 'Daffidilly Daddy'. Comparing it to her previous cartoons (and there were both better and worse since though they'll be talked about individually at later times), there are better ones such as 'Hullaba-Lulu', 'Magica-Lulu' and 'Beau Ties'. There are also worse Little Lulu cartoons such as 'Lulu Gets a Birdie', 'Lulu at the Zoo' and 'Lulu's Birthday Party'.

Let's start with the good things. First and foremost, the animation is nice. The style of it may take some getting used to but when you compare this cartoon to Little Lulu's debut 'Eggs Don't Bounce' the difference is staggering, here the drawing is more refined and the colours more vibrant. Winston Sharples' music score is whimsical, beautifully orchestrated and characterful as always. The main song is infectious.

Parts of 'Snap Happy' are funny, such as with the bra, the photographer's very colourful reactions and the ending. The photographer is amusing, a funnier and more interesting character than Little Lulu, and Jackson Beck does a great job voicing him. In fact the voice acting in general is dependably solid.

However, Little Lulu has been more engaging in personality before and since. Here some of her antics do get a bit irritating, that it was amazing that the photographer didn't resort to drastic measures sooner. Too much of the humour is annoyingly contrived and like you've seen the same material before and much better executed.

Regarding the story, that's just as contrived as the gags and it's also pretty thin and routine. Parts try too hard to be cute and it comes at the expense of more consistent laughs and imagination.

Overall, not awful, not great, just average. 5/10 Bethany Cox

Snap Happy was one of the more irritatingly contrived Little Lulu cartoons

Just watched this Little Lulu cartoon on YouTube. Like a previous one I reviewed called Bargain Counter Attack, this has Lulu at odds with a male adult figure only unlike that one, Lulu is really pestering him whereas in BCA, she's only doing things that simply bother the store manager who at least had a set-up scene of how mean he was to other employees that made it easy to laugh at him. Oh, and like that short's manager, the photographer here who is constantly bothered is voiced by Jackson Beck, he of the Bluto voice in the Popeye cartoons. There are some funny sight gags like a woman's bra ending up in some movie star's face or a speaker at a fountain statue unveiling ending up in a couple of the female statues' arms and talking to them. The ending is also pretty amusing. But the whole premise is too contrived with Lulu doing outlandish stunts that you wouldn't expect a kid to do (though I tolerated them in BCA) and her bothering the photographer was really just irritating. And where are her parents in all of this? Having said all that, at least the print I watched was clear and it had the original Paramount credits instead of that of the UM&M ones on red background...

extreme pedophilic references!!!!

my theory is that Little LULU is based on Shirley Temple. and most child actors are Mkultra sex slaves to the elite.

There are so many moments where lulu will end up somewhere in the genital area of an aggressive man in power.

she is always sucking a lollypop in a suggestive manner to these men.

chasing this Photographer around trying to get him to take her photo, in a very demanding way, clearly shows the child under mind control, having been created for the industry, now its overtaken her sense of normal behaviour.

And she gets away with everything because she can woo old men with her charm?? she is like 8??

anyway, i suggest watching the show and seeing the show is nothing but an inappropriate setanic sexual reference to a little girl on TV who is loved by rich men in power…..
