Kent Melton, the animation sculptor who created maquettes made of clay for iconic characters found in movies including Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, The Incredibles and Coraline, has died. He was 68.
Melton died Thursday at his home in Stone County, Missouri, of Lewy body dementia, family members told The Hollywood Reporter.
One of the few artists left in the industry who still sculpted in clay, Melton was a key player in the Disney animation renaissance of the 1990s. Later, he helped Laika Studios become a stop-motion powerhouse. Along the way, he was entrusted by animators to bring their two-dimensional drawings into a three-dimensional world.
Melton’s first Disney credit came on Aladdin (1992), followed by work on such other studio films as Thumbelina (1994), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), The Prince of Egypt (1998), Tarzan (1999), The Road to El Dorado (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...

Studio Ghibli, like Western counterparts Disney, Pixar and the UK’s Aardman, is one of the most important animation studios in movie history. Since its first feature film, “Castle in the Sky” in 1986, Studio Ghibli has delivered two dozen thought-provoking tales beautifully rendered in a unique brand of animation. To date, its output has racked up have a lucky seven Oscar bids for Best Animated Feature.
“Spirited Away” was the first Studio Ghibli movie to break into the Academy Awards conversation and did so with aplomb in 2003. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (Miyazaki the recipient) over “Ice Age,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” and “Treasure Planet.”
In 2006, Miyazaki was again nominated — this time for “Howl’s Moving Castle” alongside “Corpse Bride” and “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” with the latter movie, an Aardman creation, reigning victorious.

Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of animation. Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio that he founded with Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata, has produced such classics as “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” and “Princess Mononoke.”
Miyazaki has contended for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars three times: in 2003 for “Spirited Away,” in 2006 for “Howl’s Moving Castle,” and in 2014 for “The Wind Rises.” He won for “Spirited Away,” beating out “Ice Age,” “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” and “Treasure Planet.” Meanwhile, “Howl’s Moving Castle” lost to “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” and “The Wind Rises” lost to “Frozen.” Miyazaki was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2015, too, alongside Jean-Claude Carrière and Maureen O’Hara.

Howdy pardners! Today, we’re galloping back to 1988, when Christopher Cain and a band of rootin’ tootin’ outlaws shot up the silver screen for the American Western action film Young Guns. Presented as a retelling of the adventures of Billy the Kid during the Lincoln Couty War, Young Gun features a murderers’ row of talent, including Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney, Casey Siemaszko, Terence Stamp, Jack Palance, and Terry O’Quinn.
Cain directs from a script by John Fusco. Young Guns revolves around a group of young gunmen, led by Billy the Kid, who become deputies to avenge the murder of the rancher who became their benefactor. However, when Billy takes their authority too far, they become the hunted.
Historian Paul Hutton once called Young Guns the most historically accurate of all films focusing on the dirty deeds of Billy the Kid as of its year of release.

Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in Disney’s animated feature of the same name, is set to narrate a new documentary titled “Pencils Vs Pixels.”
Co-directed by Bay Dariz (“Hypochondriac”) and Phil Earnest, “Pencils Vs Pixels” is a celebration of 2D hand-drawn animation.
The documentary, which will have its world premiere at Annecy International Animation Film Festival next week, will explore the Disney-led 2D animation boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s which was soon eclipsed by the dawn of computer animation. But, as the film shows, a resurgence of 2D animation suggests there is still hope for the medium.
The documentary features interviews with the great and good of the animation world including Pete Docter, John Musker (“The Little Mermaid”), Tony Bancroft (“Mulan”), Jorge R. Gutiérrez (“The Book of Life”), Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”), Glen Keane (“Beauty and the Beast”), Tina Price (“Hercules”), Lorna Cook (“Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron...

Generationally wealthy royals: they're just like us!
Queen Elizabeth II's favorite movie was reportedly Mike Hodges' gloriously campy "Flash Gordon." Her son, King Charles, is apparently a fan of morose singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. When Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud isn't ordering the mutilation of journalists, he evidently enjoys pro wrestling.
Entertainment is essential. It's what gets us through the drudgery of day-to-day life, and even the most monstrous people who've ever existed require this escapist outlet. Adolf Hitler was a cinephile. So was Joseph Stalin. Donald Trump reportedly loves Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita."
King Abdullah II of Jordan is no exception. In 2002, the first child of King Hussein visited Hollywood, and, keen on meeting Steven Spielberg, visited the set of "Catch Me If You Can." He was also a fan of "Shrek," which prompted Jeffrey Katzenberg to give Abdullah II a tour of DreamWorks Animation...

Netflix is on the cusp of taking down a wide selection of movies and TV series.
The streaming service removes numerous titles each month, but without fanfare; unless you happen to select the thing that’s about to leave, you will have no idea there’s a limited amount of time left to watch.
Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of every movie and TV show being removed from Netflix in April 2023.
We’ve aggregated all the impending removals from Netflix in the UK and US, which we’ve signalled below. If there isn’t a territory listed next to the title, then it will be leaving both.

It seems like just last month Netflix was releasing the long-awaited fourth season of its stalker drama You. And that’s because it was just last month that Netflix released You Season 4! Now, with its list of new releases for March 2023, Netflix is finishing off what it started with You Season 4 Part 2.
The five episodes that make up You Season 4 Part 2 will premiere on March 9. The ending of Part 1 left things off on quite the cliffhanger so soon we will get to see how Joe (Penn Badgley) reacts to the reveal of the other serial killer in his orbit. Netflix is premiering a fresh season of another one of its TV hits this month as well with Shadow and Bone Season 2 premiering on March 16.

March is a time for madness, whether it comes from basketball, Mercury retrograde, or a person’s home streaming habits. Netflix joins in on the chaos by updating its library with all three “Hangover” movies, a whole lot of workout content, “Magic Mike Xxl,” and much, much more.
On March 9, the streamer will premiere Part 2 of “You” Season 2, starring Penn Badgley, Charlotte Ritchie, and Ed Speleers. The five remaining episodes find Joe (Badgley) trapped in a volatile dance with London mayoral candidate and serial killer Rhys (Speleers), trying to prevent more murders but also not go down for the many he’s committed in the process. The trailer shows Joe and Kate (Ritchie) growing closer, more brushes with Kate’s wealthy socialite friends, and the return of Victoria Pedretti as Joe’s wife Love — or maybe the ghost of his wife, and of sins past.

Goodbye to Andy Fletcher, a beloved New Wave uncle to countless Depeche Mode fans over the years. It was far from a surprise, but Tuesday’s 2022 Oscar nominations crowned Queen Bey for the first time thanks to “King Richard.”
Long predicted by pundits and Gold Derby users alike, Beyoncé and co-writer Dixson landed an Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song category for “Be Alive” from “King Richard.” The inspirational track plays over the end credits of the family sports drama about Venus and Serena Williams. All told, “King Richard” earned six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Will Smith, Best Supporting Actress for Aunjanue Ellis, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.
As Smith explained previously, Beyoncé became involved in “King Richard” after seeing an early screening of the film. “The marriage of a movie and a song is a kind of magic that’s unmatched in entertainment,” Smith, a nominee as a producer of “King Richard” was well, told Entertainment Weekly. “I was so happy when Beyoncé called.

Since Billie Eilish‘s theme song for the latest James Bond film “No Time to Die” hit the charts two years ago, the pop star and her brother Finneas O’Connell have remained Oscar frontrunners for composing the track. It makes sense since the pair cleaned house at the Grammy Awards for Eilish’s debut album (which O’Connell produced). She’s the “it girl” right now and both Adele and Sam Smith took home Oscars for their own Bond franchise efforts, “Skyfall” and “Writing’s on the Wall,” respectively. But Eilish following in their footsteps with a Best Song statuette isn’t the slam dunk some people think it is.

For the Dreamworks Animation film “Spirit Untamed,” composer Amie Doherty had to straddle a difficult line: writing a musical score that worked for both the feature’s target audience of young kids and also their savvier and more emotionally mature parents.
“That’s something we talked about a lot. For Elaine Bogan’s animated feature film directorial debut, DreamWorks Animation’s Spirit Untamed, it seemed like there was a constant bit of kismet at play.
“When I was first called and contacted to become part of the Spirit franchise, I jumped out of my car,” Bogan told Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles on Sunday while sharing a panel with composer Amie Doherty. “I was sitting in the parking lot at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center just after having ridden my horse, so the timing of everything felt great.”
Bogan said she’d long held a deep affinity for the Spirit property, going back to the initial film in the franchise, 2002’s Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.
“I’ve been an equestrian since I was a kid, and I grew up watching the first film until I broke the DVD in half,” she revealed.

This sequel to the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron may please very young children, but it is a much lesser beast
The 2002 family animation Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron told the tale of a noble stallion’s battle to stay free in the 19th-century old west. Now comes a sequel in which the truly wild creature is not a horse but a 12-year-old girl with a stubborn streak. She is Lucky (voiced by Isabela Merced), whom little kids may recognise from the Netflix spin-off series. This film is a sort-of origin story to the show, an account of how Lucky and Spirit the stallion meet. It’s a sweet, undemanding film that, despite the title, is tamer than a sedated bunny. That said, the four-year-old I watched with spontaneously yelped “this is the best!” 20 minutes in. So really, what do I know?

The lore of the “Boss Baby” universe is as extensive as it is bewildering. Loosely based on the book by Marla Frazee, 2017’s “The Boss Baby” — which was, shockingly, Oscar nominated — covered the existence of Baby Corp, the company in the sky that creates infants and sends them to Earth either to be raised by human parents or on missions to ensure babies’ hegemony as the most loved creatures. (Puppies are a close runner-up.)
A magical milk formula prevents those chosen ones from growing up, and a whole protocol à la “Men in Black” erases the memories of the adults who received these babies in suits that were never meant to be part of the family but just transient employees for the corporation.
All of these plot points remain in place for the sequel, “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” which follows the franchise’s Netflix spin-off series. With director Tom McGrath,...

Just over a week ago, The Fate of the Furious revved into cinemas, posting the highest opening weekend since the pandemic began. Many exhibitors were therefore excited about the future promise of school holidays and two other upcoming major releases, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and In The Heights.
But what a difference a week can make. New outbreaks of the virus are impacting cinemas across the country and disrupting the market.
The situation is rapidly evolving, but cinemas in Greater Sydney, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour, are now shuttered amid a city-wide lockdown that will last until at least July 9.
That date will already see Sydney cinemas shut during the highly anticipated release of Disney/Marvel’s Black Widow, directed by Aussie Cate Shortland, on July 8.
Elsewhere in Nsw, mask-wearing indoors, including cinemas, has been re-introduced, as has the one person per four square metres rule.

Ves Award-winning How To Train Your Dragon franchise alum Simon Otto has been set to make his animated feature directorial debut on Locksmith Animation’s That Christmas. Based on a trio of children’s books by writer/director Richard Curtis, and previously known as The Empty Stocking, the film is currently in development at Locksmith Animation’s studios in London.
Elisabeth Murdoch, Sarah Smith, Julie Lockhart and Bonnie Arnold are executive producing That Christmas. Curtis is writing the screenplay with Peter Souter and will also exec produce along with Colin Hopkins and the book’s illustrator Rebecca Cobb.
The three Curtis books in the series — The Empty Stocking, Snow Day and That Christmas — tell charming family stories which take place in the run-up to Christmas. The Locksmith film places these stories in a small English beach town and interweaves them to create what the studio describes as “Love Actually for kids.

Photo: ‘Spirit Untamed’/Dreamworks The More Stars, The Better Get ready to ride with the Dreamworks animated film, ‘Spirit Untamed’. This film is meant to be a sequel to the beloved and severely underrated animated film, ‘Spirit: Stallion of The Cimarron’, and also the Netflix adaptation ‘Spirit: Riding Free’. The film had been released in theaters on Friday, June 4th. The Dreamworks website has a list of all the theaters where the film will be screened, along with the showtimes. Reportedly, the film is expected to be available to stream in the upcoming weeks. The film’s director, Elaine Bogan, has been involved with many Dreamworks productions in the past, doing storyboarding for the animated films, ‘Megamind’, and ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. However, her directing credits are very minimal. She only has four animated films credited to her, with two out of those four being spin-offs or sequels. Despite this,...

Warner Bros./New Line’s “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” is helping to bridge the post-covid box office between Memorial Day weekend and bigger releases in late June, opening this weekend to $24.2 million from 3,102 screens as it also debuts on HBO Max.
This total is slightly above the series-low opening for the eight-film “Conjuring” franchise, which was $20 million for the 2019 spinoff “Annabelle Comes Home.” Produced on a $39 million budget, the horror film is on its way to turning a solid profit for Warner Bros. Reception for the horror film has been fairly positive with a 61% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ on CinemaScore, consistent with “Annabelle Comes Home.”
Prior to the weekend, “Conjuring 3” had been projected for a $16-20 million opening, though analysts who spoke to TheWrap said that an opening in the low $20 million range was possible if the stronger-than-expected turnout that appeared on...

The new animated feature “Spirit Untamed,” in theaters June 4, celebrates the power and importance of friendships, but at its heart is a theme of fearlessness.
Director Elaine Bogan makes her feature in the follow-up to the popular 2002 movie “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.” This time the focus is on a new character, 12-year old Lucky (voiced by Isabela Merced), a headstrong girl with a sense of adventure, who learns about her true self when she moves from the Eastern U.S. to the Wild West during the frontier era. Along the way, she forms an unlikely connection with Spirit, a wild mustang.
She also collaborated with composer and songwriter Amie Doherty to create the film’s theme song, “Fearless” which runs through the movie, reflecting Lucky’s resilience. Bogan discusses the film and how it came together in a pandemic.

With movie theaters open and as vaccination rates in the United States continue to rise, the prospect of summer blockbuster season is not some far-off dream, but a burgeoning reality. Ahead, here are the new movies in theaters starting Friday, June 4.

Memorial Day weekend gave us proof that audiences are ready to return to the cinemas, as long as there is strong enough content to draw them in. With an overall weekend haul of $80.6 million, over 85% of which came from A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella, the domestic box office saw its best weekend since March 2020. While a repeat of the holiday weekend’s numbers is unlikely, AQP2 will battle it out with this week’s major newcomer, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, to lead another weekend that shows the business continues on its road to recovery.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is the third proper Conjuring film, with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga returning as the demonologist couple, and it is the eighth film overall in the Conjuring universe. The series’ top opener was The Nun with $53.8 million, followed by the first two...

When “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” hit theaters in the summer of 2002 — after an out-of-competition premiere at Cannes, no less — the DreamWorks animated adventure didn’t seem necessarily poised to kickstart a sprawling, decades-long franchise. It was mostly well-received, with some critics heralding it as a new classic while others took umbrage with some of its more predictable elements, and it pulled in a very respectful $122 million at the global box office. A mix of computer animation and traditional hand-drawn styles, the tale of a free-spirited Mustang and the Lakota Native American who helps save him offered a classic fable with some forward-thinking ideas, and was also just lovely to look at.
Fifteen years later, the film — which literally ends with its equine hero riding off into the sunset, the point of the entire movie — inspired a strange followup: a computer-animated Netflix series about a plucky tween girl who befriends...

A kid named Lucky loses her mother, moves to the frontier with her father and befriends a wild mustang in “Spirit Untamed.” While experienced professionals fail to break the strong-willed stallion, Lucky (who has never ridden a horse) feeds it a few apples, and before long, the youngster has tamed the obstinate animal — which is inconsistent with this cheap and all-around lazy animated movie’s title, but chalk that up to marketing.
While Disney churns out live-action remakes of its most popular cartoons, DreamWorks Animation has another strategy: For every modestly successful theatrical release, it spins off an episodic TV series to Netflix or Nickelodeon to keep the characters alive and the merch in demand.

When the best thing about a film is the music being used in the trailer (Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams”), maybe you need to go back to the drawing board. Dreamworks Animation’s “Spirit Untamed” has vivid moments of beauty, but loses its gallop with a facetious storyline about identity as it keeps trying to define itself as an “empowering” film for little girls, missing the mark on both fronts

When DreamWorks’ Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron came out almost 20 years ago, critics praised the film for its breathtaking animation and deft merging of traditional 2D drawings and newer 3D technology. Some also, I think unfairly, bemoaned the clichés in its straightforward narrative of a wild Kiger mustang stallion in the American West refusing to be tamed by either blood-thirsty white colonizers or compassionate indigenous people. The film was light on dialogue and heavy on plot-moving music cues (Bryan Adams to be exact), but its simplicity made it distinctive and emotionally resonant.

Movies are back. We didn’t have a proper summer movie season last year thanks to Covid, but as more and more people get vaccinated, audiences have already shown a willingness to return to theaters, that is if there’s good stuff to actually see. Thankfully this summer movie season has us covered, and with delays and constant schedule shuffles, we’ve been waiting a really long time for some of these. Here are the 32 movies we’re most excited for coming soon.

Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson star in this “Saw” sequel that casts Rock as a detective investigating a Jigsaw copycat killer and a new series of grizzly murders.
“The Woman in the Window”
Amy Adams stars in this updated take on “Rear Window,” in which she plays an agoraphobic woman who witnesses the murder of her friend, only to realize the woman she thought was murdered is someone else entirely.

On Monday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, host Jimmy Kimmel offered his two breakdown of former president Donald Trump’s latest missives, also discussing a controversy surrounding Kentucky Derby winner, Medina Spirit.
“Thanks for joining us on the day after Post About Your Mom On Instagram Day. I hope you didn’t screw that up,” Kimmel joked in his opening. “There’s a lot of pressure on Mother’s Day. I usually just pretend to be kidnapped, and I’m returned later that night.”
Like Presidents Biden and Obama, former president Donald Trump sent out a Mother’s Day message on Sunday. But as Kimmel reminded his viewers, Trump is no longer allowed on Twitter. Therefore, he turned to his own website to share his Mother’s Day message with followers.
“Happy Mother’s Day to all,” Trump wrote on Sunday. “It will all come back Bigger and Better and Stronger than ever before.

That’s what happened early in the Oscar season, when “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” star Colman Domingo revealed what really happened in a key scene with Chadwick Boseman, and how the film’s most powerful moment almost didn’t happen at all.
Just before the April 22 Independent Spirit Awards, I asked the Spirit-nominated actor to share the moment that could win Boseman a posthumous Oscar, the second in history after Peter Finch’s win for “Network.”
It was the sixth week of shooting. With Viola Davis wrapped, director George C. Wolfe focused on Boseman and Domingo — two band members in a basement rehearsal room.
“This was rigorous, and George knows how to work his actors,” Domingo said. “We dramaturged every scene; we went deep and were able to dance and play with it in every way possible.

The independent film community is not assembling under a billowy white tent for the 36th Independent Spirit Awards on the Saturday before the Oscars. Mounting a live awards show on the Santa Monica beach just wasn’t going to happen. Yes, the Oscars will give it a try April 25 via two Los Angeles hubs and another dozen or so satellite feeds around the world, but the Academy has millions to spend on safety protocols. Nonprofit arts organization Film Independent will hold the annual awards ceremony as a IFC primetime live broadcast April 22 at 7pm Pt, 10pm Et.
More people voted for the Spirits this year than ever before: Film Independent has grown to over 7,000 members, adding more international voters. Spirits have a $22.5 million budget cap; international film qualification is based on the writer, director, and producer’s country of origin. A foreign-language with an American story is not an international film; nor is “The Father.

When the Netflix film “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” debuted in 2018, Lana Condor became a household name. Condor starred as Lara Jean Song Covey, who wins the heart of class heartthrob Peter (Noah Centineo). She reprised the role in the film’s sequel, “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You,” and the third film, “To All the Boys: Always and Forever.”
This week, Condor will host the Costume Designers Guild Awards on April 13, and calls it a “dream job.” Ahead of the event, Condor shares her excitement for hosting the evening which celebrates excellence in costume design and her favorite film looks.
What is it like to be hosting the Costume Designers Guild Awards?
I did not think that this would ever have been possible. The fact that I’m getting to host this incredible awards show is a dream come true.
I get to dress up and go wild.

Written, directed and starring Julie Delpy, the family drama My Zoe from Blue Fox Entertainment hit theaters this weekend before dropping on VOD on May 25. As the big banner and specialty box office attempt to find its footing as restrictions of the pandemic lift at a cautious glacial pace, the film managed to add some coin to its box office till, earning an estimated $32,506 for its opening weekend in 237 theaters.
Also reporting numbers for their opening weekends in the specialty box office space are a pair of thrillers starting with the pandemic-themed feature Safer At Home from Vertical Entertainment. The thriller hit 79 theaters in its debut and banked an estimated $41K — not too shabby. The Vigil, an IFC Films supernatural horror that is steeped in ancient Jewish lore, opened in 55 theaters and earned $25K. Another healthy number for an opening considering the circumstances.
