The REAL toolman!
matlock-613 October 2003
Bob Vila is probably the best known fix-it, handyman, repair, renovation guy in history. He is remembered by many as the original host of This Old House, but his own show "Home Again" is just as good (except that it doesn't air on PBS and therefore has to contend with commercials).

Home Again doesn't usually take on the huge projects that they do on This Old House. Instead, they deal with smaller issues that many people can tackle themselves.

Bob manages to produce a show just as good as This Old House with the help of 5 people. Three of them are freelancers. He can distill a process so the average viewer can easily understand what is new or different. Occasionally, Bob moves the program ahead at the expense of the person who is on camera with him. This might be seen as being rude. Sears was a sponsor of Bob's show until they were bought by K Mart, who thought that Ty was more to their liking. Ty's "Extreme Makeover" has a lot of emotion but not a lot of how to information. There should be room for both of them on TV. We hope that Bob stays around for a long time. He is the godfather of "how- to" programs.

Questionable Horticulturist

Love most everything on the show, but why do you have that batty Ruth woman to offer landscaping guidance? She seems sweet and well meaning, and probably knows a lot about gardening, but she interviews terribly. She doesn't answer Bob's prompts or pick up on what he is saying. Repeats herself. Poor design choices and layouts. Promotes winged euonymus as a hedge when it is an established invasive species in New England and is NOT deer resistant, even as in her next breath she focuses on how she selected other deer resistant plants for the property.
