Launch of Japanese Man-of-War 'Chitosa' (1898)

This Edison film shows the Japanese cruiser Chitose at a San Francisco shipyard where it is being taken out into the sea. This film runs just 52-seconds and I'm sure many would just roll their eyes and wonder what the big deal of this thing is. Well, to me the big deal is simply seeing a part of history and something that wouldn't be around had these early film pioneers not gone out and filmed pretty much everything they could. Seeing this ship was certainly very entertaining as was seeing the people standing around on shore watching the events. Apparently this was filmed on January 22, 1898 and released to theaters two months later. The history of the boat is available on several different sites and makes for an interesting read after viewing the film.
