A fascinating film that is brilliantly well done.

Warning: Spoilers
I found this film on Youtube.com, and at first thought it would be another low budget, poorly done World War 2 movie made by 2 high school kids, because almost all the other WW2 films on youtube are, but after watching the first 10 seconds I knew I was wrong. Dead wrong.

It is so well done, and is entirely serious (until the end anyway) and I was absorbed into the film.

Nearly everything is accurate (the story isn't, but the props, uniforms and vehicles are) and the acting is great. I wish more films were like this.

A must see.

Dramatic and stylish - a stunning achievement. We need more like this!

I first encountered this film at Cannes in 2002 and would just like to say for the record what a great achievement I think it was. Of all the shorts I've seen in my career as both film maker and viewer (too many, I sometimes feel,) none have had the scope and sheer bravery that this exhibits. The story is fascinating (and true if the opening credits are to be believed) and the design and camera work far more stylish than a lot of big budget feature films out there. As a director, Jack Jewers strikes just the right pitch, handling actors with a sensitivity and the action with a flair that puts far more experienced directors to shame. You want to know how to do top-notch drama without a budget? Well look no further. Brilliantly filmed, acted and directed. Give me more like this.
