The key to the success of Rod Serling's original run of "The Twilight Zone" (and its enduring popularity) was ingenuity in all aspects of production. Obviously, the writing was almost always top-notch, with episodes boasting wildly clever premises from genre masters like Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont, and George Clayton Johnson. Though the budgets were modest, directors employed all manner of trickery and inventive makeup effects to dazzle and/or terrify viewers. Meanwhile, the strange tales conjured by Serling's stable of scribes required fully committed performances from actors both established and new to the scene. They had to roll with the weirdness.
On certain occasions, however, Serling and his collaborators couldn't resort to special effects to transport their audience. Sometimes, they had to shell out some dough and wow 'em with the real thing. And sometimes this forced the director to scramble a good deal more than usual. Such was...

The Mike Flanagan Netflix era has come to an end, as Flanagan and his partner Trevor Macy are leaving the streaming service behind for a new deal with Amazon. That means we likely won't ever get a third season of Flanagan's "Haunting" series, which kicked off with the excellent "The Haunting of Hill House" and continued with "The Haunting of Bly Manor." "Hill House" was a (loose) adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, while "Bly Manor" took inspiration from "The Turn of the Screw" and several other ghost stories penned by Henry James. But what tale of terror would Flanagan and company have relied on if the show had returned for a third season?
We now know the answer, thanks to Flanagan himself. The filmmaker has written an introduction for the new Suntup Editions release of Richard Matheson's "Hell House," and in said introduction, Flanagan...

This morning, Suntup Editions has announced a fine press limited edition of the 1971 novel Hell House by Richard Matheson, featuring new exclusive material including an introduction by R.C. Matheson, a foreword by Mike Flanagan and afterword by Nancy A. Collins.
In his foreword, Flanagan reveals that had there been a third season of his ‘Haunting’ series for Netflix, it would have been an adaptation of Hell House!
Flanagan explains, “When I adapted Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House as a Netflix series, there was much talk about how to continue the Haunting anthology. We followed Hill House with The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on numerous ghost stories by Henry James. Had there been a third season, I wanted that season to be The Haunting of Hell House. It was actually the first title we explored when Hill House was over, but the rights were spoken for and...

Everyone’s entitled to at least one good scare on Halloween, but writer/director Stephen Cognetti’s Hell House LLC found footage franchise is filled with them. Even better is that they all take place in and around Halloween. Now four films deep, with the most recent Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor arriving on Shudder this week, the franchise’s expansive mythology is only matched by its dedication to crafting found footage terror.
Whether Cognetti is layering in subtle background gags meant to quietly induce chills or delivering more visceral jolts through direct counters, these are the four scariest moments.

Writer/director Stephen Cognetti’s Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor, the fourth installment in the found footage series, leaves the Abaddon Hotel behind for new scares and terrain. And it’s streaming Now. Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor began streaming exclusively on Shudder on October 30, 2023.
For the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke to Cognetti about creating an original story away from the Abaddon and keeping the scares fresh within the found footage format.
For the filmmaker, Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire closed the chapter on Abaddon Hotel. The Carmichael Manor explores more of the origins behind the hotel’s mythology, yet it’s set in the present at an entirely different location, though not too far from the Abaddon Hotel.

The gate to hell may be closed, but that doesn’t mean the “Hell House” franchise is over. The fan-favorite indie found footage horror franchise is back with a new installment that takes us back into the world of Stephen Cognetti’s surprisingly complex lore.
Fittingly, “Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor” is both a sequel and an origin story that fills in the blanks on some unanswered questions from the Abaddon Hotel while introducing a new haunting ground in the Carmichael Manor.
The film debuts on Oct. 30, just in time for Halloween, and we’ve got a handy guide on how to watch it.

It is exciting to be alive in the 21st century in part because it's when the "Hell House LLC" movies started coming out. I didn't say how big a part.
Starting with 2015's "Hell House LLC" and extending now through four films, writer-director Stephen Cognetti has achieved a rare thing worth celebrating: the creation of an original film franchise that gained word-of-mouth recognition without studio support. A close peer in this space would be "Terrifier," the series of ultra-bloody killer clown films writer-director Damien Leone has been piloting into the world since the 2008 short "The 9th Circle." "Hell House" hasn't been going for quite as long and consists of haunted house films, not slashers. But it's another difference between the franchises that's most salient to raise for this discussion of "Hell House's" latest: the "Terrifier" movies have only been getting better, while the "Hell House" films have gotten worse.

Three intrepid film-makers set out to investigate spooky goings-on at a remote property. If you suspect this plot was worn out, you’d be wrong
It’s to Hell House franchise creator Stephen Cognetti’s credit that this fourth film in the series manages to lovingly revivify two horror tropes usually to be found mouldering at the back of the genre closet: the found-footage expedition and demonic clowns. That is partly on account of the mythology he has accrued over the last three instalments, centring on occult goings-on at the Abaddon Hotel on New York’s rural outskirts; it is embroidered and deepened by this quasi-prequel, helping fit out those cliches with an unsettlingly long shadow.
Everything in the film is framed by a group of documentary-style talking heads, discussing the tragic attempt of their friend Margot (Bridget Rose Perrotta) to make a true-crime exposé of the Carmichael Manor. This is the site of what,...

Joshua Zeman’s latest feature documentary “Checkpoint Zoo,” an inspiring story that unfolds in a war-torn part of the world, has wrapped principal photography. The film tells the story of the daring rescue of over 5,000 animals that were trapped in a wildlife park behind enemy lines during the early days of the Russian-Ukrainian War.
“Checkpoint Zoo” was produced by Zeman and Zach Mortensen for Ghost Robot, with Ian Davies and Torquil Jones for Noah Media Group, which is also financing the project. UTA Independent Film Group has signed on to lead worldwide sales of the picture.
In the early days of the war, a beloved animal refuge known as Feldman Ecopark, located in Ukraine’s second largest city, was in a precarious position. On one side of the park was the invading Russian army; on the other sat the Ukrainian front line. With thousands of animals trapped with little food and water,...

I know a lot of you have been asking for updates on the Japanese remake of Vincenzo Natali‘s sci-fi cult classic Cube, directed by Yasuhiko Shimizu (“Pension: Love Is Pink”). Well, we’re excited to reveal today that we bought it!
Yup! First reported by THR this afternoon, Cinedigm has acquired all North American rights to the remake of the 1997 award-winning Canadian cult classic and will be bringing it straight to Screambox subscribers on April 11th!
The newest Cube takes a deeper, darker and deadlier look at isolation and gore and follows a group of strangers who find themselves trapped in a sadistic maze without remembering how they got there. After waking up drugged and disoriented, the prisoners, who seemingly have nothing in common, find themselves in a mysterious room inscribed with an unfamiliar code.
Looking for ways to escape, they discover the room is riddled with lethal traps.

All homes filled with dysfunctional families are alike; each house cursed by ghostly manifestations of past and present sins is haunted in its own way. Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of a decrepit, rotting mansion populated by things that go bump in the night (and in the psyche) is considered by many to be the ne plus ultra of possessed-dwelling tales. The Guardian named it “the definitive haunted house story”; The New York Times declared that it had “the greatest opening paragraph in the history of horror”; no less than Stephen King,...

Horror fans don’t need a time-sensitive excuse to indulge in uncanny and unnatural literature, but there’s nothing quite like steeping oneself in a novel of the strange as the October winds blow, bringing half-imagined whispers of phantoms from the pages. Some books evoke this sense more effortlessly—and frighteningly—than others. Here are seven chilly, liminal examples of literature’s power to bring us across the veil.
Books of Blood by Clive Barker: While technically five volumes, Clive Barker’s masterwork of short horror fiction brings the perfect mixture of pulpy violence, grotesque monstrosities, and transcendentally disturbing themes. His tales take the reader through gritty urban wastelands, liminal spaces of decay or transgression, where the rejected pieces of society manage to make a life—and encounter monsters in the process. Particularly poisonous treats include the titular story, a nightmarish diatribe on the roadways of ghosts; “Rawhead Rex,...

I've got a crazy trailer for a new horror thriller called Halloween Pussy Trap Kill! Kill!. I don't know if you're familiar with the filmmaker Russ Meyer, from the 60s and 70s, but it totally seems like this is the kind of movie he would have made in the style of Saw. Meyer is behind such films as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Common Law Cabin, Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers!, Vixen, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and more. They are all very grindhouse-style type movies.
Anyway, if you're familiar with his stuff, then Halloween Pussy Trap Kill! Kill! is a film you'll probably enjoy. Here's the synopsis:
On Halloween an all girl rock-n-roll band called “Kill Pussy Kill” ventures out to play their biggest show to date. However, before hitting the road they manage to unwittingly upset a man. Unfortunately, this man turns out to be an evil genius dead set on revenge.

Thanks in large part to the overwhelming success of Paranormal Activity, the horror genre has been overflowing and oversaturated with found footage films. Cameras and editing equipment are now more accessible than ever before, so it’s only natural that independent filmmakers would explore the no-budget approach and try to strike the spot where Paranormal Activity’s lightning shattered the ground.
Unfortunately, that’s led to an overabundance of poorly executed movies made by filmmakers trying to make a quick buck rather than trying to make a good film. There have been a few diamonds in the rough, though, and thankfully Stephen Cognetti’s Hell House LLC is one of those rare gems.

James + Semaj is a column where James Franco talks to his reverse self, Semaj, about new films. Rather than a conventional review, it is place where James and Semaj can muse about ideas that the films provoke. James loves going to the movies and talking about them. But a one-sided take on a movie, in print, might be misconstrued as a review. As someone in the industry it could be detrimental to James’s career if he were to review his peers, because unlike the book industry—where writers review other writer’s books—the film industry is highly collaborative, and a bad review of a peer could create problems. So, assume that James (and Semaj) love all these films. What they’re interested in talking about is all the ways the films inspire them, and make them think. James is me, and Semaj is the other side of me.

Halloween 2016: 31 Movies to Stream on Netflix this October to Get You into the Spirit of the Season
One of my favorite things to do every October is to binge-watch as many horror and sci-fi movies as possible (something I can guarantee I’m not alone in doing), and for those of you with Netflix, the streaming service can be an invaluable resource this time of year, although I do remember a time when there were a lot more options than we get these days.
That being said, I culled Netflix's entire library and put together 31 great movie choices that will undoubtedly get you into a macabre mood to celebrate Halloween this year. Take a look at our Netflix list below, featuring one film for each day of October, and get ready to enjoy an entire month’s worth of fright-filled fun, courtesy of Netflix’s streaming database.
Creep (2014)
Looking for work, Aaron (Patrick Brice) comes across a cryptic online ad: “$1,000 for the day. Filming service. Discretion is appreciated.

Do houses have memories? These ones seem to. We pick our favorite haunted house movies and TV shows...
The haunted house is a staple horror device. Usually hundreds of years old, ideally massive, and imposing with as many turrets as its roof can bear, there’s nothing like a haunted house to give you the creeps.
But making this list wasn’t as easy as you’d think. To qualify for the list, a film had to feature an actual haunted house – which immediately rules out many of the films that spring to mind when you read that title. The Shining, for example, is about a haunted hotel, not a house. Paranormal Activity initially seems like it’s about a haunted house, but it’s not the house that’s haunted, and also the supernatural entity is a demon, not a ghost. Ditto Insidious, which has some ghosts,...

Special Mention: Spirits Of The Dead (Histoires extraordinaires)
Written and directed by Federico Fellini (segment “Toby Dammit”), Louis Malle (segment “William Wilson”), Roger Vadim (segment “Metzengerstein”)
France, 1968
The first thing you should notice is the three directors: Federico Fellini, Louis Malle, and Roger Vadim. Secondly, take notice of the cast, which includes Brigitte Bardot, Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, Alain Delon, Terence Stamp, Salvo Randone, James Robertson Justice, Françoise Prévost and Marlène Alexandre. Spirits Of The Dead is an adaptation of three Edgar Allan Poe stories, one of which demands to be seen.
The first segment of the film, Vadim’s “Metzgengerstein”, is unfortunately the least impressive, but is still great in its own right, and features a marvelous performance by Jane Fonda. Malle’s segment, which is the second of the three, turns Edgar Allan Poe’s 1839 story into an engrossing study in cruelty and sadism. This episode is an engaging enough entry,...

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions, and more.
The only directing duo contributing to Tales of Halloween, John Skipp (writer of A Nightmare on Elm Street 5) and Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy) have a lot to say about making a movie with their friends and the current state of horror. Their segment, “This Means War,” about a pair of neighbors feuding over Halloween decorations, deals with this very subject.
One of the things I love about Tales of Halloween is that so many of the segments deal with different aspects of the holiday. Yours tackles Halloween decorations... sort of. Where did the inspiration for your short, "This Means War", come from?
Andrew Kasch: Halloween haunts are my jam! Each year, I hit...

Inspired by the realities and legends surrounding the Winchester Mystery House, the 2002 mini-series Rose Red, written for the screen by Stephen King, centers around a desperate psychology professor and her team of psychics exploring the haunted Rose Red mansion. On the outside, Rose Red is a looming beast of a house that literally builds itself as it looks out over metropolitan Seattle; it’s a classic haunted mansion with gates and walls covered in dead vines and yards filled with mossy statues and clouds of fog. But within, it’s a fluctuating puzzle of dark, beautiful hallways and rooms where ghosts lead visitors to their doom.
Part of Rose Red’s charm comes from its characters. Matt Ross (American Psycho) is stunning as Emery, an anti-social, “momma’s boy” with the ability to see the dead, and Julian Sands is effortlessly charming as the mindreading Nick Hardaway. Nancy Travis has...

The following opinion/argument/rationalization/waste of your time is strictly my own. In no way am I speaking for any other person than myself.
Paul W.S Anderson these days could be considered Public Enemy #1 in the genre world. He has ticked off many fans with his adaptations of pre-established franchises such as 'Resident Evil' and 'Alien Vs. Predator' (though the sequel by the Brothers Strausse was infinitely more horrendous). He is a director who seems to value style over substance and doesn't appear to listen to the people who he tries to make these movies for. On top of that, as a writer, let's just say that the fanfiction I write could run circles around his, though obviously he gets paid and I don't. Additionally, he's married Action Amazon Milla Jovovich and has a darling little girl who he helping to protect from the paparazzi.

Welcome Back to The Stack Holiday Gift Guide. We are approaching the end of our look at the magnificent 2014 output of Scream Factory with only one more episode to go after this one. Legend of Hell House (1973) has long been considered the poor man's The Haunting (1963) and while there is some truth in that The Haunting is clearly the superior film in most ways, that doesn't detract from the very real intensity of Hell House. The film looks good all spruced up for Blu-ray and now might be a good time for people to reconsider whether or not they think it deserves a higher place in the haunted house hall of fame. The Final Terror is also a film that should get some reappraisal....

Charles D'Ambrosio's new collection, Loitering, out November 11, confirms what his devoted readers have known all along: He is among America's finest essayists. Slyly cumulative in their emotional power and inspiring in their moral insight, D'Ambrosio's pieces jump from personal history to cultural deep-digging. In honor of Halloween, we're running the book's "Hell House" essay, in which D'Ambrosio writes about his visit to a Christian haunted house in Texas. Hell House Hell House is a ramshackle arrangement of buildings meant to depict in a literal and somewhat medieval way the vast potential for ending up eternally damned. It’s a haunted house in a haunted world, and through it you wind, down corridors of billowing black Visqueen, through rooms luridly lit by strobes and TV screens, past stage sets peopled with rapists and murderers and terrorists until, briefly interred in a black coffin whose convenient and clever back door opens onto the afterlife,...

Despite the fact that it was released over 40 years ago, John Hough’s The Legend of Hell House still remains one of the greatest and most effective haunted house films ever committed to celluloid. Based on Richard Matheson’s screen adaptation of his own novel, Hough’s production offers very little in the way of explicit violence and gore. Instead, the British filmmaker smartly relies on minor in-camera special effects, a pulsating sense of atmosphere and dread, as well as a stellar cast of players to bring his terrifying vision to life, making The Legend of Hell House a timeless horror classic that’s still terrifying to watch.

Well done haunted house chiller offers plenty for the shiver‑and‑shock fans. A fitting swan song for [Aip co-founder] Jim Nicholson, this could roll up good grosses in general, ballyhoo, drive‑in markets if Fox gives it an appropriately strong sell. Rating: PG.
"This house... it knows we're here!" Of such ominous dialogue are classic style horror pictures made and The Legend Of Hell House, while no classic, is spookily amusing, sometimes scary stuff with plenty of mass appeal for summer playdates. In fact, this maiden effort from the late James Nicholson's Academy Pictures is slick and entertaining enough to register as one of the season's better attractions, if 20th Century‑Fox capitalizes on its considerable ballyhoo potential.

The Legend of Hell House The Belasco House had seen its fair share of tragedy and carnality even before the man who had it built disappeared, but the years since have seen a continuation of death and terror. It’s known as Hell House, the Mt. Two of them are going to find out first hand before the week is out. "Belle"
What's It About? This 18th century English romance is about Dido Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a biracial woman raised by her aristocratic great uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mansfield. She grows up alongside her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) as equals and best friends, but as they come of age, their differences become all too apparent -- to each other and to their would-be suitors. Meanwhile, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) is facing a trial as Lord Chief Justice of England that could change the future of slavery. Will Dido find love on her own terms?
Why We're In: It's an elegant period piece perfect for Jane Austen fans, and it's a subtle but effective examination of the intersection of class and race in 18th century England. Mbatha-Raw is fantastic, and director Amma Asante has an excellent eye for detail.

Whenever I reflect, and consider some of the best haunted house films in cinema history, The Legend of Hell House is almost always near to the top of the list. It’s just a creepy, effective exercise in the concept that less is more. It doesn’t assault the viewer with special effects, or cheap jump scares, it’s just good, old-fashioned film making, that makes the viewer walk away feeling like they’ve seen more than they have. The Legend of Hell House, is creepy, atmospheric, and wholly convincing, and it does so with a PG rating, even though it was made prior to the invention of the PG-13, that still says something about the impact a film like Hell House has on its viewers. Though it’s more along the lines of a haunted castle, than a haunted house, the basic premise remains the same. A group of...

It has been a long time since the last time I watched The Legend Of Hell House, so I’m very excited that I’m finally going to be given the chance to revisit it on Blu-ray, from none other than Scream Factory, of course. The disc drops on the 26th of August as part of the brand’s “Summer Of Fear” lineup, which includes titles like Ginger Snaps, Lake Placid, Motel Hell, Without Warning, and a ton more. If you’re a fan of classic horror films, keep your wallets handy. The extras on The Legend Of Hell House may not be plentiful, but they’re all-new, including a new interview with the director, and a new audio commentary with actress Pamela Franklin. We’ll keep you posted on any new announcements in regards to the lineup. Check out the official press release below, and pre-order your copy here.
