The Best Musical Moments of 2016The Best Musical Moments of 2016Adriana Floridia12/28/2016 4:41:00 PMThere's nothing quite as beautiful as when a film has an extraordinary musical moment. It's especially impressive in films that aren't musicals, as these moments are often risky, out-of-the-blue, and special moments that catch us off guard but add another dimension to the whole. Oftentimes musical moments become iconic: think Ferris Bueller singing in the parade, the cast of Magnolia mouthing to Aimee Mann's "Wise Up" or the spontaneous dance scene in The Breakfast Club. Countless moments like these have become stand-out aspects of the films in which they live, and 2016 was no exception. While many of the films on this list are music themed, just as many are not. Whether or not the film's plot or genre centered around music, all of these 2016 entries were the most memorable moments from their films. We compiled...

While the captivating, magnetic films of Paul Thomas Anderson have run the gamut of moods, settings and styles, there’s a singularity to each of them brought by the auteur himself, and that’s explored beautifully in “Paul Thomas Anderson Mixtape,” the newest 4½-minute video from Vimeo user Javier Virto. Read More: Retrospective: The Films Of Paul Thomas Anderson Taking choice clips from “Hard Eight,” “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” “Punch-Drunk Love,” “There Will Be Blood,” “The Master” and “Inherent Vice,” this melancholy, dreamy supercut communicates the consistencies, rhythms and harmonies found in all seven P.T. Anderson feature films. And accompanied by Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl,” found in Anderson’s second film, and then Aimee Mann’s “Wise Up,” featured prominently in his third feature, this video mixtape not only mirrors the filmmaker’s unplaceable allure but often equals his radiance in some key edits. Truly dynamic stuff. Since dropping out of.

Okay, I did not get it all right last year. Perhaps you think my crystal ball had a crack in it. But I did not say they would all hit this year. Check back on 2014′s predictions come the 2020′s and you might be surprised how right I am. Or not, but still if we don’t look at where we think we are going, how are we to pave the roads to take us there?
So what I do I predict this year for the years ahead? In examining this list, take in mind that I am not advocating for these developments, nor am I ranking them. I just took the moments needed to examine where we are today, what’s been said, and where it may all lead. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this and where you think it may go too.

Sylvester Stallone has revealed that Robert De Niro convinced him to step back into the boxing ring for new movie Grudge Match.
The acting legends pay homage to their iconic roles in Rocky and Raging Bull in Peter Segal's comedy, but Stallone admitted that he had reservations about the film turning into "a cartoon".
"When I read it I thought it was very, very funny and I knew Robert was involved but I thought I couldn't pull it off. I thought it was going to make fun of Rocky and Raging Bull - it's going to be a cartoon," he said.
"Robert convinced me, he said, 'Wise up, this could be good, it's an unusual situation'. It takes one fictional character [Rocky Balboa] and one real [Jake Lamotta] and puts them in the ring together, it's almost like a computer game."

Harry Connick Jr. is my favorite American Idol judge so far, and not just because he cradled a contestant like a baby on tonight’s season 13 premiere. (Anyone else jealous of that baby?)
In the face of a steady stream of mediocre contestants, “your mom’s favorite singer” did not sugarcoat his critiques. Plenty of times, Keith Urban and J. Lo said yes to someone and Connick Jr. had to be honest: “I don’t think you’re a good enough singer. No.”

For those who have stuck with "Hostages," Monday's (Dec. 2) episode pays offs. Big time.
Giving new meaning to the Stockholm Syndrome, FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle and Dr. Ellen Sanders (Dylan McDermott, Toni Collette) finally share a deep kiss. That's the penultimate scene of this episode.
The last scene has the kidnapper kidnapped. Carlisle is hogtied, duct tape slapped over his mouth and tossed in a van.
Before we get there, much happens to advance the plot, and five couples are highlighted.
Ellen has resigned herself to having the president die on her operating table. Carlisle explains to his co-conspirators, Archer, Kramer and Sandrine (Billy Brown, Rhys Coiro and Sandrine Holt) that they must take out the new team of hit men gunning for the president. He knows it's kill or be killed.
Carlisle also explains to Ellen's husband, Brian (Tate Donovan), that he needs Brian's contacts as a real estate...

When music fans heard that Elvis Costello was collaborating with the Roots, a few wondered if he might be making his first hip-hop album. Their recently released Wise Up Ghost does have the Rock Hall of Famer eschewing complex melodic turns for vocals that are nearly recitatives over some fairly spare, bottom-heavy beats. But he already had a history of that: You might go back and consider wordy classics like “Pump It Up,” “Tokyo Storm Warning,” and “Episode of Blonde” closer to being rap records than this one is. It’s hard to pin down the spirit

This fall, as usual, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is everywhere. He’s on your TV, he’s on your Twitter feed, he’s on the display table at your neighborhood bookstore — and, of course, he’s the one anchoring the relentless groove of the world’s funkiest band, the Roots, whose ballyhooed album Wise Up Ghost, a spiky soul-funk collaboration with Elvis Costello, is officially released today. Questlove’s omnipresence has even extended into the lunch hour: D.J.'ing the Lunch Break, a series of hour-long midday dance parties, co-sponsored by Absolut and Flavorpill. Vulture spoke to Questlove about the summit with Costello, his D.J.'ing “game theory,” and the teapot tempests of the musical summer just past, including Miley’s twerking and Robin’s “rapeyness.”One of the nice things about Wise Up Ghost is how organic it sounds — it doesn’t sound like one of those shotgun weddings,...

On “Wise Up Ghost,” Elvis Costello and the Roots make surprisingly compatible musical companions. From the first jagged synthetic rhythms that open the sinister-sounding “Walk Us Uptown,” it’s clear that there’s something special happening that unfurls through the course of 12 tracks. The British singer/songwriter, known for his often snarling observations, and the Philadelphia hip-hop collective find an immediate groove that plays to both their strengths: Costello’s trenchant, biting words and complex melodies and The Roots’ imaginative and creative song construction that pulls in a wide array of influences. [More after the jump...] After Costello admired how The Roots would...

It is a rare thing when two things you love from two different worlds come together, it does not happen often and can lead to great anticipation. Anticipation was what I felt when I first heard that Elvis Costello was going to be working on an album with Philadelphia’s The Roots crew. Anticipation for what could be an amazing album from two acts who have the capability to produce incredible music but there is also the chance that this album could lead to something best forgotten.
Although as surprised as I was when I first heard of this collaboration it immediately made sense; Elvis certainly has a soulful sound within him and we know The Roots are no strangers to Rock and Roll (remember the Seed 2.0 from 2002 for example). The album is released on September the 17th on the legendary Jazz label Blue Note. The...

It only took a brief introduction on the set of Late Night wIth Jimmy Fallon for Elvis Costello and the Roots to team up for their unique new project. Described by ?uestlove as “a moody, brooding affair, cathartic rhythms and dissonant lullabies,” their collaborative album Wise Up Ghost is the result of a year’s work in studio, creating a hybrid of the Roots’ organic, live hip-hop and Costello’s iconic status as legendary wordsmith. Not to mention that Costello “went Ham on some ole Ezra Pound shit,” according to ?uestlove. You can now hear their album in full on NPR now...

Elvis Costello and the Roots, “Walk Us Uptown” Elvis Costello has always thrived in the company of a fierce backing group, and if anyone can match the slashing attack of the late, lamented Attractions, it's the Roots. The first taste of Wise Up Ghost, the E.C.-Roots album that arrives in September, folds a whole lot of history into its three-plus minutes — what else would you expect from a Costello-Questlove collaboration, a summit meeting of pop’s biggest nerd-connoisseurs? There's dub; there’s New Orleans funk (listen to the horns); there’s some wonderful Steve Cropper–style guitar playing; there are menacing organ lines that nod to garage rock, and to Costello’s old keyboard ninja, Steve Nieve; there’s some vaguely psychedelic clatter that you may as well just call hip-hop. The groove is a monster, but “Walk Us Uptown” isn’t just funky, it’s smart — a song calibrated for optimal punch,...

In January, we first heard that Elvis Costello and the Roots recorded an album together. Well, it's really happening and here is the first single, "Walk Us Uptown." Previously, Questlove described the sound: "I went stark and dark on the music, Elvis went Ham on some ole Ezra Pound shit." This basically sounds like that, with Costello using his moody, "Spooky Girlfriend" voice. The song comes courtesy of a lyric video, featuring Costello and Questlove playing a record. The album, Wise Up Ghost, comes out September 17, two days before Jimmy Fallon's birthday. This might be a coincidence or maybe Fallon is a much more demanding boss than we ever imagined. "Make an album with Elvis Costello or you're not coming to the Tonight Show," he might've said.

Yes, you read that right: Elvis Costello and The Roots have combined for a collaborative effort, called "Wise Up Ghost," due on Sept. 17 on Blue Note. If anything, the holy union between British rocker Costello and the hip-hop jammers for a new album has yielded a classic Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson quote: “It's a moody, brooding affair, cathartic rhythms and dissonant lullabies. Fox hasn’t officially confirmed it, but sources close to American Idol are buzzing that Season 12 Top 4 week will be a two-theme kind of party: One-Hit Wonders and Contestant’s Choice.
The former — which topped an At&T “fan’s choice” vote — has the potential to be fantastic, as long as producers don’t try to force the contestants toward novelty hits or tired old songs that have been covered on Idol a million times before (and simply happen to qualify under the one-hit wonder header).

While Ivy may be all about Broadway (and the same can be said for Wicked alum Hilty), her CD takes an unexpected route. We chatted with her Monday about it and, of course, whether Ivy is ever going to get back into Bombshell:
TV Fanatic: I remember talking to you about a year ago about the CD coming together. How you feeling now that it’s finally coming out?
Megan Hilty: I can’t believe it’s happening.
Tvf: You’ve been through launching Broadway shows and TV shows. Is it a whole different beast putting out a CD?
Mh: It’s a totally different thing because it’s just me!

Bret Easton Ellis, who made headlines earlier this year for his Matt Bomer Twitter tirade and defending Paris Hilton's anti-gay remarks, proved Wednesday that he's an equal opportunity offender. The author, best known for "American Psycho," slams "Zero Dark Thirty" director, Kathryn Bigelow, this time.
"Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she's a very hot woman she's really overrated," posts the writer of Lindsay Lohan's "The Canyons."
But he didn't stop there. Next he decided to call out her specific films, including "The Hurt Locker" for which she won an Oscar (ahem, the first Best Director win by a woman).
"Kathryn Bigelow: Strange Days, K-19 The Widowmaker, Blue Steel, The Hurt Locker," he writes. "Are we talking about visionary filmmaking or just Ok junk?"

American Psycho author/ amateur d-bag Bret Easton Ellis cranked his douche ray up to 11 last night, putting Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow on blast for being a hot lady. Lord, why did you let us invent Twitter? “Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she’s a very hot woman she’s really overrated,” Ellis tweeted. From there it was a breeze collecting the author’s douchiest tweets. (Well, douchiest in the past few months. There are too many to count!) Can we be honest though? As douchetacular as Bret Easton Ellis clearly, clearly is…a lot of his tweets are pretty funny. We know! We’re so weak! However, at the end of the day, isn’t it possible to think someone or something is a total douche but still enjoy them? We hope so! That’s the basis of our enjoying anything!

'Idol' expert Jim Cantiello offers up suggestions for the top eight as they tackle songs of the cinema.

"American Idol" top 8
Photo: Fox
"American Idol" ended last week in a swirl of shock, anger and boo- hooing as Pia Toscano was sent home and Ryan Seacrest was reduced to begging viewers: "We need you! Stay with us this season!"
Where does the show go from here? Well, "Idol" will be relying on the bright lights of Hollywood to wash out memories of arguably the most shocking elimination in its history, as the remaining eight singers take on songs of the cinema. That's a familiar theme in "Idol" land, one last seen just last year (recall how Crystal Bowersox gave a killer country-rock makeover to Kenny Loggins' "I'm Alright"), but which stretches back all the way to season two.
What direction should the contestants take?...

Whether or not you’ve recovered from Pia Toscano’s shocking elimination from American Idol, the Season 10 show will trudge on Wednesday night with the Top 8 performing a “Songs From the Movies” theme. On paper, it could be a terrific 90 minutes of music — as long as the contestants aren’t limited to a list of 20 treacly ballads from Disney soundtracks, Celine Dion, and Bryan Adams. In my spirit of undying/naive optimisim, I’ve cooked up song suggestions for the remaining finalists. Ch-ch-check ‘em out, then brainstorm some ideas of your own in the comments. And for all my Idol news and commentary,...

Fanning
It seems that playing Cherie Currie in The Runaways (2010) was just not enough girlgroup action for Dakota Fanning. News is she and little sister Elle are maybe doing a biopic about a failed 1960s family band The Shaggs. [src]
Dakota, The Shaggs, and Elle
Are there any other Fanning sisters we haven't heard of yet to play the other band member(s)? If Dakota is moving backwards in time through musical biopics will we be seeing her and Elle doing The Andrews Sisters biopic set in the 1940s a decade or so from now? There are not enough pictures, other than war movies, set in the 1940s if you ask me.
But I'm actually a bit surprised they're in talks to do something together. Dakota and Elle aren't frequently photographed together. The pics accompanying every article about them seem to be from 2008 so I guess I'd pictured them as one...

When Danny Boyle snuck his new film "127 Hours" into the Telluride Film Festival last week it was as a heartfelt thank you to the festival for the early support it gave "Slumdog Milionaire" two years before. Audiences turned out to be just as grateful. The survival drama stars James Franco as mountaineer Aron Ralston, who managed to free himself after being trapped by a boulder in a Utah canyon for five days by severing his own arm. The experience is not just another kinetic work from Boyle, it's an especially intense one: A viewer in the very first screening required medical attention before the film was over.
The Hollywood Reporter: Why do you like bringing your films here? Because it sounds like the fest organizers didn't even expect '127 Hours' to be ready.

Pictured above: My reaction to Disney's "Double Rainbow" parody. The window of opportunity to take advantage of an Internet meme tends to be approximately a week or two, depending on the lasting value of the meme, and missing that window can mark the difference between a video/image that's lauded as comedic brilliance and one that's subjected to savage ridicule. Disney missed the window by about two months. Watch the video, and join in on the ridicule, after the break. Cartoon Brew found the vid, which on top of already being dated, reeks of a marketing campaign that's trying way too hard to be funny, hip and topical. Wise up, Disney. This is not how you work the viral marketing angle. No matter how popular and amusing an online clip may be, using it to sell your movie only serves to lower people's opinion of it, regardless of the quality of the actual film.

Updates Conan's $40 Million NBC Goodbye, Settlement Not Done But Close; Zucker Threatened To Ice Conan! Said "I'll Keep You Off The Air For 3 1/2 Years"; Team Conan Counters: "This Will End Up In Front Of Judge If NBC Doesn't Wise Up"; NBC Boasts O'Brien's Ratings Up; Secret Negotiator Tuesday 10:45 Am: I've learned that NBC late night chief Rick Ludwin, a big Conan O'Brien supporter, was not consulted by The Two Jeffs -- bigwigs Jeff Zucker and Jeff Gaspin. "When the decision was made, Gaspin and Zucker never brought Rick into it," an insider told me this morning in disbelief. [...]...

In March 2006 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sprung one of its annual surprises by awarding the best picture Oscar to Crash, rather than Ang Lee’s acclaimed gay cowboy drama, Brokeback Mountain. At the time it looked as though racism and multiple vehicular pile-ups had trumped homosexuality in the battle of the “hot button” issue movies. But perhaps the Academy was belatedly acknowledging the kind of ambitious, densely plotted, multi-character dramas made famous by the great Robert Altman. From 1975’s Nashville, to Short Cuts, Prêt à Porter and his 2006 swansong A Prairie Home Companion, Altman allowed audiences to immerse themselves in the cinematic equivalent of a book of short stories. Writer Alissa Quart has characterised these films with multiple intersecting plotlines as “hyperlink movies”, in which, “information, character, and action co-exist without hierarchy”. Now I’m a fan of Altman and I loved Paul Thomas Anderson’s,...

It has been my experience that there are two types of people in the world: those who love Magnolia, and those that don't (and the ones that don't, man, they really don't). I fall into the first category, and I'm still occasionally surprised by the people who will come out of the 'Magnolia closet' as either a fan or someone who just ''doesn't get what all the fuss was about". Now I'm not going to spend the next couple of paragraphs defending Anderson's flick, but it does feel like I'm forever trying to explain just what I think is so fascinating about a film centered on the intersecting lives of a group of damaged individuals living in the San Fernando Valley.
So it really doesn't matter what you tell me about how ridiculous you thought it was when the frogs fell from the sky, or that Anderson is an overindulgent director,...

Some very different cinematic methods and above-average acting and direction make this entourage of beautiful people a rom-com worth watching Writer/director Julian Kemp is best known for his 1997 BAFTA award winning children's tale "Roger and the Rotten Trolls,. which he shared with Phil Partridge and his second award for "Wise Up" shared with Mick Robertson. Although this film is hardly for children he has maintained a very playful style in dealing with the ups and downs of love and, well, being a dolt. But he is a loving dolt and finally starts to see the light at the end of the tunnel by the end of this cross-channel treatment of Alain de Botton.s international best seller, .On Love..
