A gangster learns from a newspaper reporter that the police have found a witness who saw him kill a police officer. He directs a gang moll to pump the reporter for the name of the witness and directs his henchmen to construct a time bomb to eliminate the person who can identify him as the murderer. After the timer on the bomb has been set, but before it can be placed, the police arrive to interrogate the suspects.
A pretty young woman hard up for money answers a newspaper advertisement seeking a girl of her description to perform an unspecified job. She discovers that the man who placed the ad wants her to pose as his wife for a day to please his mother who he believes is suffering from a fatal illness and could die at any time. Complications ensue when the old woman begins to show signs of making a full recovery.
During the waning days of World War II, an American soldier mopping up German positions stumbles upon a cache of diamonds hidden in a wine cellar. Although he could be sent to prison for looting, the infantryman takes the gems and hides the diamonds in the stovepipe of a remote German train station before he can be search by MPs. Although the G.I. carefully wrote down the name of the train station, he is unable to find its location on any map of Germany. He travels to New York City's main library for assistance.
