I'm James Gibson and I wrote and directed Landmark.
I wanted to make a British film that looked like cinema - Something the Brits don't do. When we Brits get our hands on screentime, we always end making something that looks like good TV.
My idea was to exploit the screen and create some huge vistas whilst, at the same time, tell a little intimate and personal story.
We shot over four days on 35mm(anamorphic) in the summer. It turned out to be thick fog for the first three days and gloriously sunny on the final day. As we had no weather cover we just had to shoot when we could. We ended up shooting almost the entire film on the last day! Not a bad acheivement really.
The film was shortlisted (not nominated) for the BAFTA that year and has been in the running for quite a few other prizes internationally. In all, it has been a fantastic experience.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped me bring this film to the screen, particularly JS Mundh who co-wrote it, Tony Dixon at Yorkshire Arts who started the funding-ball rolling, Ann Tobin at YMPA and Gary Holding who produced it with Simon Watson. I don't know what I'd have done without Gary. He knew when to be around and when to keep his distance - He's been a great friend ever since.
