Not The Definitive List
Theo Robertson8 December 2003
This opens with a montage of scenes from different SF shows from over the years , including THE GREEN SLIME which is not actually a TV show but a crap Jap movie from the late 1960s so right away you just know someone hasn`t been doing their home work . The montage also includes a scene from QUATERMASS AND THE PIT which is in my opinion the greatest SF serial ever broadcast . Guess what ? It doesn`t actually feature in the top ten . Neither does the classic BBC drama DOOMWATCH and most shockingly of all neither does THE X-FILES possibly the most successful American show of the 1990s

Almost as shocking is the inclusion of BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY at number 9 . How can you include that but not THE X-FILES ! And since QUATERMASS and DOOMWATCH are both missing ( Not to mention the BBC adaptation of Orwell`s 1984 which shocked a nation in the 1950s ) what do we get instead ? The highly camp THE TOMORROW PEOPLE and the bizarre and confusing SAPPHIRE AND STEEL . I can`t help thinking this list was compiled so that the interviewees could have a laugh at the expense ( Lack of expense ? ) of some dubious shows

There are of course some decent candidates like BLAKES 7 , with DOCTOR WHO at number 2 and STAR TREK ( Yawn ) at the top but any list of classic telefantasy shows that exclude QUATERMASS and THE X-FILES while including camp nonsense is not to be taken seriously
