Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls certainly pulls from the aesthetic and narrative party bags of noir and road movies. It even indulges the pleasures of high lesbian camp as two friends are drawn into a government-connected conspiracy. But to call it pastiche, a term that could be handily affixed to any number of films by the Coen brothers, is inadequate here given the rollicking, casual, intimate nature of Drive-Away Dolls’s relationship to its generic forebearers. In the classic queer punk tradition of Bruce Labruce, John Waters, and Gregg Araki, Coen’s film knows when to pay homage and when to move to its own rhythm.

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Narrowing down the best movies in any genre is tough, but for lesbian films you have to begin with a reductive question: What is a lesbian film? What, in fact, is a lesbian?.
Must the film focus primarily on a gay storyline, or can it feature strong lesbian characters doing something entirely different than just being lesbians? Is subtext enough, or must the sapphic be explicit? How much cinephile wrath will rain down on us for the absence of a certain recent Oscar winner?
Compared to the stand-outs of queer television, the best lesbian movies have relatively little time to convey their perspective on the vast, varied, (sometimes) vaginal lesbian experience. And yet, ultimately, the best lesbian films honor not just their own perspectives, but also the glory and traditions of all of queer cinema. Strong women, high entertainment value, and bold visuals reign supreme.

Angela Robinson has signed a multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group
Under the terms of the agreement, the director and writer of the GLAAD Media Award and Saturn Award-nominated independent drama “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” will develop and create original scripted television programming for all Warner Bros. platforms, which includes on-demand and streaming services like WarnerMedia’s HBOMax, premium and basic cable channels and broadcast networks. Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed, but sources say that the deal is valued in the eight figure range.
Most recently, Robinson executive produced the film “Passing,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this past January. Much has been made in recent years of the need to support, uplift, and, for the love of God — finance —more women filmmakers, but how many lesbian films have shaken out from all that hand-wringing? It’s heartening to see a woman at the helm of a comic book movie, but when was the last great lesbian rom-com? (Even more pressing: Where is the next one?) As in the struggle for queer liberation, lesbians —and lesbian films — are often an afterthought. That’s one of the many salient points covered in the peppy new documentary, “Dykes, Camera, Action!,” which while offering yet more proof that no one does catchy titles like the queers.
At a breezy 60 minutes, the film has much in common with that other lesbian tradition, the potluck, in terms of the topics it covers. There’s a little o’ this, a little o’ that, plus plenty of vegan and gluten-free options.

The 2018 Outfest Film Festival, the largest Lgbtq film festival in Los Angeles, will feature its most inclusive lineup of filmmakers with narrative and documentary features that reflect a growing sense of activism in the Trump era.
Organizers of Outfest, which which kicks off Thursday night, are celebrating a record number of entries this year by filmmakers of color, women and transgender directors. Two-thirds of films screening at the festival are from these underrepresented groups, a new milestone, said Outfest director of programming Lucy Mukerjee. Last year, 50% of the films at the festival were directed by women.
Mukerjee explained that it has become imperative for Outfest to be more inclusive and intersectional, reflecting not just one narrow view of the Lgbtq community.
“Putting the creative visions of women and people of color and transgender directors on the same plane as cisgender, white directors felt like the only logical and ethical thing to do,...

As we gear up for an awards season ripe with many quality queer films, it’s important to remember smaller successes who may get lost in the shuffle. Lgbt-themed film festivals Outfest and Frameline kicked off the summer, while New York’s own NewFest wrapped up last week. It’s always thrilling to see a gay film get awards attention, like the kind lavished on Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name” and foreign language contender “Bpm (Beats Per Minute).” But it’s been a banner year for nuanced queer films across the board, and especially ones from queer-identified filmmakers.
From up-and-comers making splashy debuts, to longtime favorites who have stepped up their game, the filmmakers on this list represent a varied swath of not only the Lgbt spectrum, but vastly different artistic styles. That means they have the potential to reach different audiences — and open up perspectives across demographics.

'Professor Marston and the Wonder Women' Director on the Superhero's Kinky Origin Story (Exclusive)
If you saw Wonder Woman this summer -- and the record-setting $800 million worldwide box office indicates a lot of people saw Wonder Woman this summer -- then you know the story of how Diana, Princess of Themyscira, became the superhero Wonder Woman, protector of mankind. How Wonder Woman ended up on the pages of comic books in the first place is a story unto itself however, told in Professor Marston and the Wonder Women: In 1941, Dr. William Moulton Marston (played by Luke Evans), his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), created the character to save the world...through psychology. Director Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S.) could never have predicted, though, that her Wonder Woman indie would arrive in theaters mere months after one of the biggest movies of the year.
"I'm getting a lot of credit for having the foresight to know that in the summer of 2017, the 75-years-in-the-making, long-gestating Wonder Woman movie would...

Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected),” which debuted in competition in Cannes and scored fresh acclaim at the New York Film Festival, is a day-and-date Netflix release, so no numbers are reported. It’s likely that the family comedy starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman, who all did substantial press, played well enough at high-end theaters in New York and L.A. to take a bite out of its competitors.
Despite the lack of reported numbers, a glance at the pre-buy seating chart for the Landmark theater in West Los Angeles for Sunday shows in a theater with over 100 seats that are close to sellouts hours ahead of time suggests a weekend total that might be roughly $20,000 (roughly). That’s impressive for a film that any Netflix subscriber can see at home.
Other openers continued the string of movies about real people that are dominating the specialized release schedule.

“Wonder Woman” might be the year’s most outwardly feminist blockbuster, but another of this year’s most outwardly feminist biopic chronicles her creation. Kinky and conventional in equal measure, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” follows the unlikely (and mostly true) creation of Wonder Woman, born out of both forward-thinking theory and a polyamorous relationship that endured for decades. Robinson’s film follows Professor William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their one-time student and eventual lover Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote) as they try to navigate a complex three-way relationship while also dealing with intense public scrutiny.
Cleverly packaged as a straightforward drama about personal desires and professional accomplishments, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” is a hugely satisfying alternative to often cheap excuses for feminist movies in Hollywood. If there’s one thing the film doesn’t skimp on, it’s the purposely feminist...

When Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” gave us Diana Prince’s fabled origin story, there was no trace of the whips and chains she so often battled in early comic editions by original Wonder Woman scribe William Moulton Marston. Diana’s inventor was as eccentric as they come, living in sin with two women and harboring some radical views about dominance, submission, and monogamy. In “Professor Marston & the Wonder Women,” we get to see the saucy side of Wonder Woman in this sultry new biopic of Marston and his notorious love triangle.

It’s not that this general idea hasn’t come our way before, including in the form of shows like Burning Love, but I don’t think we’ve had quite as blunt an effort that specifically took on the “We’re just famous,” sub-genre.
Potentially, this one could be hilarious, and I’ll let you know a little closer to the air date, but let me know what you think about the idea.

Out model/actress Natalie Garcia strutted her stuff in the Budweiser Black Crown “Celebration” ad. Garcia steps up on a table at the five second mark.

D.E.B.S. was actually made twice. First as a short starring Tammy Lynn Michaels, and later as a feature length film with a larger budget and distribution. The latter version came out in 2004 and was just as gay — if not gayer — than the original.
So what happened to the ladies of the feature film D.E.B.S.?
Sara Foster as good girl Amy
D.E.B.S. was Sara's first feature film, and she was its star. Since then, she's had a few minor roles on TV shows and movies (Psych:9, Demoted) but most recently she's appeared in the recurring role of Jen Clark on 90210. She is often photographed watching the matches of her boyfriend, professional German tennis player Tommy Haas.

During the month of February, AfterEllen.com highlights the queer black women who continue to overcome obstacles in the entertainment industry and society, ultimately finding success. These women not only face discrimination for being queer in such an image-oriented profession, but for being black as well. Regardless of how you sexually or ethnically identify, let's celebrate these bad-ass individuals!
This week’s spotlight: queer black women behind the camera.

In our first annual Top 50 Lesbian and Bi Characters poll, we asked you to vote for your favorite characters from film, television, and internet shows.
You cast your votes, and now we have the results. Before we reveal the winners, let's take a look at some of the trends that emerged.
Almost all of the characters were from films and television shows that made their debut after the year 2000. A few of the exceptions include Kerry Weaver from ER, and the ass-kicking ladies from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
While most of the characters were from Us productions, a fair amount came from international shows, including our top two characters (from the UK show Skins).
Also notable was the fact that some of your favorite characters, the leads from Xena: Warrior Princess (which ran from 1995-2001) and Idgie Threadgood from the film Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), were never officially presented as lesbian or bisexual.

As 2009 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the people and events that made this the Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. in pop culture.
Luckily for all of us, there was far more information to have mentioned from the last ten years than we could have included in this brief survey. That's why our lists for each year are not intended to be exhaustive, but are instead snapshots of different memorable moments that included the representation of lesbians and bisexual women in film, television, music, literature, comics, sports and the Internet since the year 2000.

Notwithstanding her fame in showbiz, Sara Foster has been planning to marry her fiance, German tennis star Tommy Haas, in a small and intimate ceremony with only them and a priest attending. The actress doesn't even bother having her parents, music mogul David Foster and model Rebecca Dyer, on the guests list.
"The wedding is going to consist of three people: him, me and the person who marries us. This is what I wanna do," claims Sara. "I feel like the vows you say are very private (and) you don't need anyone to listen to them, just him and the priest."
It is understandable then that Sara makes no mention on her wedding date and venue.

The Alma (American Latino Media Arts) Awards aired last Friday, September 18th from UCLA’s Royce Hall to honor Latinos in America for their achievements in the entertainment industry.
The show, also called the “Latin American Oscars,” was co-hosted by the new hottie mommy Eva Longoria Parker. An entire gallery really should be dedicated to how on fire she was on the red carpet and onstage charming the audience. Though it looked kinda like she rummaged through her closet and found all seven of her unused prom dresses from the '80s, the Desperate Housewives diva was smokin’ hot.
Now if only we could drop that pesky “Parker” from her name.

In honor of the upcoming film Blood The Last Vampire and its plaid skirt wearing protagonist, over at io9 they’ve put together a little gallery of other schoolgirls who kick considerable butt and look good in the process. Among the list of notables are the girls of D.E.B.S. (including Devon Aoki), the chicks from the schoolgirls versus zombies film Uniform Sabaigaru, Go Go from Kill Bill and Hermione Granger of Harry Potter fame.
Of course, as much as girls in schoolgirl uniforms are cool, I might expand the list to include other types of killer girls in uniform like cheerleaders and nurses. But that’s just me. Maybe that’s a topic for another gallery? Perhaps. In the meantime, check out some of the pics after the break.
For the full gallery, head over to io9.

Taking a page from our friends at AfterElton.com, who have a weekly entertainment column called "Ask the Flying Monkey," we're introducing a weekly column to answer your entertainment-related questions.
Want to know the status of a particular movie, TV show, or band? Wondering what a certain actress is up to these days? Want to know if someone is openly gay? (We won't out anyone, but we'll let you know what they've said publicly.)
Send your questions to askafterellen@gmail.com — with your first name, city and country — and Karman Kregloe and I will try to hunt down the answers for you (we'll trade off writing this column each week). Not all questions will be answered, and it may take a few weeks to answer some of them, but we'll try to get to as many as we can.
Note: this isn't a personal advice column — please post your dating...

Sean Astin, Sara Foster and Ceila Weston are the latest to join Michael Vartan and David Cross in James B. Rogers' upcoming indie comedy "Demoted," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Written by Dan Callahan, the film centers on two tire salesmen (Vartan, Astin) who enjoy playing big pranks on their co-worker (Cross). But when the latter suddenly becomes their new boss, he seeks revenge by making them his new secretaries.
Foster will jump into the role of Astin's wife, who thinks he's just been promoted, while Weston will star as the head secretary who pushes the two friends to pursue a revenge on their own.
Astin most recently starred in "The Final Game," and is currently filming "Stay Cool" for Michael Polish. Foster's acting credits include "D.E.B.S." As for Weston, she most recently starred in Oliver Hirschbiegel's "The Invasion."...

Herbie comes to theaters overloaded since much of the publicity surrounding Disney's retro children's film has focused on the grown-up problems of its star, Lindsay Lohan. Nevertheless, Herbie, the anthropomorphic auto, would not have survived five decades of film and TV exposure unless he was one resilient VW Beetle. And Lohan has star potential even if this vehicle -- ahem -- doesn't allow her to explore the comic and dramatic range of her most recent film, Mean Girls.
Herbie: Fully Loaded is, pure and simple, a children's film. Youngsters, who have no idea that Herbie has been around the track so many times, will giggle at this car with so many needy emotions. Teens, attracted by Lohan, will be entertained even if most would prefer the action in The Fast and the Furious. Baby-sitting adults will be amused to discover a bit of auto-eroticism in a G-rated film: Yes, a sleek, shiny New Beetle turns Herbie's lights on -- even if it is his taillights. Boxoffice will be decent though not extraordinary.
Acknowledging Herbie's long, historic track record, the new filmmakers -- an entire pit crew of writers and director Angela Robinson, who created a stir at Sundance in 2004 with D.E.B.S. -- initially show Herbie as a tired wreck arriving at the junkyard. But wait! A new college grad, Maggie Peyton (Lohan), a third-generation member of a NASCAR racing family, suddenly needs wheels for a few weeks. It isn't even love at third sight, but eventually Maggie decides to buy Herbie for $75.
The old VW springs into action immediately: Herbie wins a street race for Maggie within minutes of his purchase even though she barely touches the steering wheel. That race sets up all the movie's elements: There's her old high school pal Kevin (Justin Long), a mechanic trying to rescue a debt-ridden car repair shop who is bedazzled with both Maggie and her Bug. There is arrogant NASCAR champ Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon), who gets smoked by Herbie and vows revenge. There's her dad, Ray Peyton Sr. (Michael Keaton), who forbids her to race again. (It has something to do with her looking like her late mom and he can't afford to lose her again, if that makes any sense.) Finally, there's Ray Jr. (Breckin Meyer), who unlike Maggie has not inherited the family's racing gene.
Plot is best ignored in a movie where a car is the dominant character, his rolling headlights providing insight into his emotions and squirting oil and banging doors help him to get his points across. The racing footage -- accomplished with split screens and a combination of second unit photography, CGI and digital effects -- gets Herbie around the track, though some of the effects are a bit cheesy.
Lohan manages to establish a credible character in this young woman at a crossroads in her life. Unfortunately, the other actors get stuck in routine roles that fail to exploit their talents. Tech credits are OK. The film has fun with a soundtrack of classic rock standards, all used at appropriate moments.

David Ayer, whose 2001 Training Day explored the gritty streets of Los Angeles, is returning to those same streets for a film starring Christian Bale, Eva Longoria and Freddy Rodriguez. Ayer will direct Harsh Times, a low-budget indie feature that he wrote. Ayer is producing the film with Andrea Sperling (Dot, D.E.B.S.). Harsh Times takes place in South Central Los Angeles and is a coming-of-age story about two men in their 20s. Bale and Rodriguez play the friends, with Longoria appearing as Rodriguez's girlfriend. Ayer wrote the script in 1995 and developed it with the Sundance Screenwriters Lab.

LONDON -- Organizers of this year's Times BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday announced a lineup light on U.S. fare but with a strong representation from world and European cinema. During this year's edition of Europe's largest non-competitive film festival, Hollywood presence will be felt with the unspooling of animated film The Incredibles at a family gala presentation, with Focus Features' Vanity Fair and Warner Independent Pictures' We Don't Live Here Anymore also bowing as gala presentations. Sundance hit Tarnation will unspool during the event's Experimenta strand as one of that section's galas, while other movies from the U.S. include D.E.B.S., Bad Santa, Door in the Floor, Down to the Bone, Criminal and Garden State. Announcing this year's lineup of 180 features and 103 shorts, LFF artistic director Sandra Hebron said she was delighted with the "diversity and quality" of the selection.
