A field trip worth going on
TheLittleSongbird1 February 2021
There are a fair share of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes that centre around an individual story, and there are great examples such as "A Looney Beginning", "Her Wacky Highness" and "Fields of Honey", all show high points. There are just as many, and perhaps even more, episodes that are made up of two or more segments (mostly three), again some great examples and many come off entertainingly but the quality is not as consistent with not every segment being completely successful.

"Going Places" (made up of "When You're Hot", "That's Art Folks" and "Slaughterhouse Jive") is another one of the segment structured episodes, and like a good deal of the segment structured episodes it is uneven. As of now is rated lower than the previous episode, the Season 2 opener "Pledge Week", but to me it's actually the better episode. Due to being less low-key, wittier, having no characters that annoy and with a more consistent quality with the segments. The segments also are more relevant to the episode's theme and connect more with the wraparound.

Animation is great, especially in "That's Art Folks". It is vibrantly coloured and beautifully rich in detail, not just the backgrounds but also the expressions and reactions of the characters which are wonderfully loony. The music is dynamic and characterful as always and the theme song has always brought a smile to my face. Something that was the case when a child and still is now. The voice acting is very good, especially Tress MacNeille.

Much of the writing is sharply witty, apart from in one segment. Of the three segments, my favourite was "That's Art Folks", the art museum setting (a perfect one for a Babs-centric segment) is inventively used and just loved the Wackyland vibe that is classic 'Tiny Toon Adventures'. "When You're Hot" is not as imaginative in the material, with the storytelling being quite formulaic, but there is still a good deal of wit and the character interaction between Buster, Hamton and Plucky sparkles.

Did think though that the wraparound, while very amusing, was not one of the most inspired ones of the show, and serve mainly to link the segments together.

Faring weakest of the three segments and the weak link of "Going Places" was surprisingly and disappointingly "Slaughterhouse Jive". It was a shame that a segment with such a terrific title, with such a ring to it, was pretty ordinary and feels over-stretched. The educational aspect of the writing was a touch heavy handed and didn't illuminate as much as it could have done.

Overall, well done if not great. 7/10
