Rob Lake's future at the hospital now lies in the hands of Roger Hurley. If Hurley is to succeed as Clinical Director of the hospital, fast rising from the ranks of its three star status, he needs the best physicians around him. Luckily for Rob his face seems to fit, but when sheer determination and ambition wear thin, where do his allegiances lie? Can he justify being the hypocritical nail in the coffin for one of the consultants? Will he do to someone else what he saw done to Maria Orton when she tried to blow the whistle?

There's always a sinking feeling you get when you see an expectant couple walk into the South Central labour ward full of hope, and you know they're going to end up with him pale as a sheet and her looking like an extra in a slasher movie. But there are surprises tonight. The gore factor is slightly lower than usual; Rob gallantly offers Maya some advice about hospital romances; Polly gets a kick in the teeth from the drug company man; and Chrissy worries about Whitman's manner with female medical students. What's the surprise there? Ah, he has a magnificent ace up his sleeve.
