In Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” Dickie Greenleaf’s father asks Tom if he’s ever read Henry James’ novel “The Ambassadors.” The reference is a sly one; James’ 1903 book is about a man sent from the Northeast to Paris to bring back a wayward son. That’s Tom’s mission, as well, though his European transformation is starkly different from James’ Lewis Lambert Strether, who ultimately returns to America wiser but sadder.
Tom intends no such return, and who could blame him when he sets up house in a palazzo as magnificent as the one in Steven Zaillian’s Netflix adaptation “Ripley.” “Who died?” his frenemy Marge (Dakota Fanning) quips when she first sees it; the answer is, of course, Dickie Greenleaf, but Tom pretends it was the aunt who raised him.
“In 2005, I did the film ‘Casanova,’ directed by Lasse Hallström,” “Ripley” production designer David Gropman told IndieWire.

Fresh controversy is brewing in the French film industry just weeks after a bombshell documentary detailing sexual assault accusations against Gérard Depardieu divided its ranks.
In what promises to be another divisive affair, actress Judith Godrèche has publicly condemned the relationship she openly had with director Benoît Jacquot in the late 1980s, which she says began when she was only 14 years old and he was 40.
Godrèche said this week that she was “under his influence” and that the relationship was wrong.
Jacquot – whose films as director include 2015 drama Diary Of A Chambermaid, Farewell, My Queen and Casanova, Last Love – has always held that Godrèche was 15, the minimum age of consent in France.
Godrèche, who is now 51, lived with Jacquot for six years and appeared in his films The Beggars and The Disenchanted, before leaving him in her early 20s.

Julia Stiles channeled a popular character from her past recently and looked quite shocked by the script all these years later.
Earlier this week, the Mash-Up Americans Book Festival in New York City set up Stiles to revive Katarina “Kat” Stratford from the hit 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You. In the big-screen teen rom-com, Kat reads a “hateful” poem to Patrick Verona, a bad boy portrayed by Heath Ledger.
“I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry,” the poem reads in part.
Toward the end of the reading, Stiles appears to get emotional recalling the scene. Her co-star Ledger died in 2008 at the age of 28. 10 Things I Hate About You is one of Ledger’s most popular films alongside A Knight’s Tale, Casanova, The Dark Knight and Brokeback Mountain,...

Actor Ethan Hawke became a film star after having done films like Dead Poets Society and Training Day. But overtime, Hawke began to notice a pattern among contemporary film stars that he wanted to take a break from.

Hawke’s filmography isn’t brimming with box-office hits like some of his contemporaries. Looking back on the actor’s work, even his successful films seem to focus less on spectacle and more on character work. This was designed by the actor earlier on in his career, who confided that he didn’t want to necessarily be a movie star. This was partially due to the Gattaca star‘s upbringing.

An edgy new voice within the world of French genre, Adrien Beau worked as a designer and scenographer for the likes of Dior, John Galliano and Agnes B before making his feature debut with the offbeat vampire movie “Vourdalak.”
Produced by Judith-Lou Levy at Les Films du Bal, “Vourdalak” will world premiere at Venice Critics’ Week and will likely be one of its boldest entries. At a time when horror has become a mainstream genre overloaded with special effects, “Vourdalak” couldn’t be more radical. Lensed in Super 16, the film’s central character is a vampire patriarch named Gorcha, played by a marionette that Beau operates and lends his voice to.
In an interview with Variety ahead of the festival, Beau says he got the idea for the film after he and Levy came across “La Famille du Vourdalak,” a strange vampire novella penned by Alexeï Konstantinovitch Tolstoï, published in...

In its continuing mission to help older Doctor Who fans relive their childhoods, and make even older Doctor Who fans say “Wait a second, that was your childhood? But you’re 30!” it has been announced that the next Doctor Who we see will not only be written by Russell T Davies, the showrunner of this version of Who’s first four seasons (plus specials), it will not only star classic, fan favourite Doctor David Tennant, and classic, fan favourite companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), it will also be scored by classic, fan favourite composer Murray Gold.
If you don’t recognise the name, you will still know his work if you’ve watched any of the increasingly-inaccurately-named “new” series Who prior to Jodie Whittaker’s incarnation. He is, in many ways, as responsible for the feel and identity of the show as Russell T Davies or his successor, Steven Moffat.

Nino Rota’s soundtrack for Federico Fellini’s 1976 film “Il Casanova,” which is getting a re-release via Italian record label Cam Sugar, has been a favorite of Alexandre Desplat’s ever since the Oscar-winning French composer first listened to it at 15 years old.
The magnificently staged film stars Donald Sutherland as the legendary 18th-century Venetian adventurer Giacomo Casanova, who sought wealthy patrons and sexual encounters as he traveled from Venice to Paris, London, Germany, Rome and Austria, where he makes love to a mechanical doll.
The 27 remastered tracks on Rota’s “Casanova” score are being re-released by Cam Sugar in collaboration with Decca Records on Feb. 10, both digitally and on vinyl. They feature compositions on the edge of classical and electronic music, making use of a wide range of instruments including harpsichord, vibraphone and electric piano.

The good news is that Pacifiction, the latest feature from Catalan auteur Albert Serra, who’s only in his 40s but directs like a grand old man of the 1960s avant-garde, is quite watchable, even sort of plot-driven — for a Serra film.
It’s got a fun central performance from Benoît Magimel and a spectacular Tahitian location. There’s even a surfing scene, the closest Serra may have ever gotten to an action sequence. On the other hand, it is still a 162-minute slog. And that aforementioned plot is a very attenuated, listless creature, telling a murky — in every sense — tale of political intrigue and municipal power struggles that refuses to be resolved or reveal any mysteries by the end. It’s like a Polynesian version of Chinatown but made by a cast and crew stoned on rum and ketamine. Forget it, Jake, it’s Papeete.

The number of films about Giacomo Casanova is legion, which makes the question “why another one?” especially relevant. What insight can be found to kindle enough interest to pour reportedly more than $7.5 million into a retelling of the great diarist’s life? Given Benoît Jacquot’s success with his earlier costume drama “Farewell, My Queen,” based on Chantal Thomas’ novel, perhaps he thought a new angle could be found together with Thomas, this time credited as main scriptwriter. How odd then that their vision imagines a world of predatory hormonally-charged females all throwing themselves at a lackluster, aging roué who shows more gusto wolfing down food than rutting around skirts.
Is this the Casanova for the early 21st century? A man famed among peers for his charisma and broad intelligence, companion of Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin, reduced to a lovesick sad-sack pining after a capricious young prostitute whose physical attributes...

The year 2020 is the 100th anniversary of Federico Fellini’s birth, and the home video world is seeing many restored and re-released titles from the maestro’s catalog. The Criterion Collection has just released a 14-movie box set, for example, but that exquisite package does not contain many of Fellini’s post-1973 titles because of rights issues.
Enter Kino Lorber. Their Kino Classics imprint has released on Blu-ray a gorgeously restored edition of Fellini’s Casanova (1976; released in the U.S. in early 1977). Casanova was immediately a curiosity because Fellini cast none other than Donald Sutherland in the role of the notorious womanizer,...

The Walking Dead actress Lauren Cohan didn’t think she would reprise her character Maggie Greene in the show’s season 10 finale, which airs this Sunday, October 4th. But after the cancellation of Whiskey Cavalier, in which she starred, it only seemed right to return to her most iconic role.
“[Showrunner] Angela Kang and I felt that there could be so much more awesome Maggie story to tell,” she said on Rolling Stone’s The First Time. “It was a very fluid creative conversation where you felt so many cool possibilities.

Leonard Cohen wrote and recorded until near his final breaths — the work, it was understood, was keeping him alive. Arriving three years after his death, Thanks for the Dance is a surprise, a sort of séance as shiva, a magnificent parting shot that’s also that exceptionally rare thing — a posthumous work as alive, challenging, and essential as anything issued in the artist’s lifetime.
Completed by his son and collaborator, Adam Cohen, it can be considered of a piece with You Want It Darker, issued just before his father...

It’s hard to imagine Doctor Who without David Tennant, as the Scottish actor’s portrayal of the Tenth Doctor remains – and likely always will – one of the most popular versions of the Time Lord ever. The Jessica Jones star has revealed, however, that he almost turned the part down when he was first offered it.
While speaking at a C2E2 spotlight panel, Tennant recalled that his relationship with the show started with his leading role in the BBC’s Casanova, which was made by the same production team as Doctor Who. As a Whovian since childhood, Tennant hoped that he might find himself a part on the show.
“Maybe they’ll give me a nice guest spot, maybe even recurring,” the actor remembers thinking. He even pushed to get himself hired but was given the brush-off. He later discovered that that was because they wanted him to replace Christopher Eccleston in the lead.
