The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has officially announced its first permanent exhibit, one dedicated to the Jewish history of the film industry.
The museum presents “Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital,” which will be on view beginning May 19, 2024. Presented in English and Spanish, the exhibit tells the origin story of filmmaking in early 20th-century Los Angeles, spotlighting the impact of the predominately Jewish filmmakers whose establishment of the American film studio system transformed Los Angeles into a global epicenter of cinema.
“The American film industry began developing amid an influx of immigration to the United States by Jewish émigrés escaping European pogroms and poverty,” curator Dara Jaffe said in a press statement. “Most of Hollywood’s founders were among this wave of Jewish immigrants and recognized that the infant movie business presented an opportunity to raise their marginalized status in an industry that didn’t...

Is it too early for a New Year’s wish? Well, I’m going to make one anyway.
I wish the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures would hurry up its long-promised Hollywoodland exhibition.
Officially titled Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital, the exhibit is intended, finally, to recognize that Jews—especially immigrants among them—did more than a little to establish the movie business in Los Angeles, beginning more than a century ago. It is scheduled to open on Sunday, May 19, 2024, and is said on the museum’s website to be the institution’s “first and only permanent exhibition.”
Many observers thought something like this would be part of the package when the Academy Museum first opened, back in September of 2021. It would seem impossible to tell the story of the film business without paying special tribute to the thousands of Jewish executives, filmmakers, and stars...

Phyllis Coates, the first actress to play Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane on television, only to leave the Adventures of Superman after just one season, has died. She was 96.
Coates, who also appeared in Republic Pictures serials and in such films as I Was a Teenage Frankenstein, died Wednesday of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, her daughter Laura Press told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Coates first portrayed the headstrong Lois opposite George Reeves as the Man of Steel in the dark sci-fi movie Superman and the Mole Men (1951).
The success of that Lippert Pictures film — the first full-length theatrical feature starring the comic-book hero — led to the quick decision to start production on a syndicated show for television.

The Hollywood Sign celebrates its 100th anniversary today when it was officially dedicated on July 13, 1923, over the Hollywood Hills on Mount Lee in Los Angeles.
The iconic landmark has become a shining beacon of hope for those who venture to seek fame and wealth in the entertainment mecca of the world. Originally erected as “Hollywoodland,” as an advertisement to lure real estate investors in 1923 has now become a major symbol of Los Angeles that has seen tragedy, many facelifts, and even pranks over the decades.

The Hollywood sign is an American landmark that’s come to symbolize glamour and the larger-than-life entertainment business. While it was erected in 1923, it’s seen many changes over the years, including a facelift championed by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.
While the sign symbolizes hope for many, it’s also seen its share of tragedy over the years, including a suicide from an up-and-coming starlet.
The history of the Hollywood sign The Hollywood sign in 1932 | Bettmann/Contributor
The original sign, built by the Crescent Sign Company, sat high in the hills and read “Hollywoodland.” Around 1922, real estate developers commissioned the company to assemble the structure to help advertise their new development.
The 13 wooden letters were 30 feet wide and 50 feet high and featured 4,000 lightbulbs to help illuminate the sign until it became too expensive. According to the Sherman Library, the entire project cost $23,000 and soon became the main attraction of the entertainment world.

In Hollywood’s long and illustrious history, thousands of young starlets have arrived with big dreams and plans. Some make it, establishing successful careers that last so long we’re duped into believing they’ll be with us forever. Who didn’t believe Betty White would make it to 100? How many of us were stunned when she died 18 days before that landmark birthday? Sadly, some don’t get that many years, and stun the world when they die suddenly at the height of their fame. Then there are those who die young and tragically when their careers have just begun, and are remembered more for their manners of death than their work. In more than 100 years of Hollywood history, there have been several deaths that have made the headlines.

“Swimming with Sharks” has waded into dangerously realistic waters while showcasing the abuse at the heart of Hollywood, but showrunner Kathleen Robertson wants to clarify that the Roku Channel series is anything but a woman-versus-woman cautionary tale.
The psychological thriller, now streaming, stars Kiernan Shipka as a Los Angeles newcomer who becomes the assistant to an ambitious studio executive played by Diane Kruger. Inspired by the 1994 film of the same name, “Swimming with Sharks” gender-swapped its two lead characters for a female-driven story.
“My feeling was if I could use this world as a jumping-off point, but have it be told through the eyes of two very complex women, there would be something there,” writer-producer Robertson told Black Book Magazine. “I’ve been a working actor since the age of 10 so this industry is very much a part of my identity. The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history. The Kid.For over a century, Charles Chaplin’s “Little Tramp” has been a global icon. His signifiers are simple: the derby hat and cane; the toothbrush mustache; the tight jacket and baggy trousers; the giant shoes. His significations, however—what the Tramp has meant to audiences around the world—have been profound. The most diminutive of men, the Tramp has had an outsized role in film history. Indeed, he is a portrait in paradoxes: a tragic-comic hobo-gentleman, flea-riddled but fastidious; a poet of pantomime, whose silence speaks volumes; a prat-falling klutz, who is the most graceful of danseurs; and a loner, who is worthier than most of human intimacy. Obtuse to the socioeconomic realities that structure his existence, he is an idealist hero akin to Don Quixote, as pointed out...

A year that saw the first Time magazine, the opening of the Yankee Stadium, the first 24 Hours of Le Mans race, and the dedication of the Hollywoodland sign — yes, the famous sign in California was spelled “Hollywoodland” when it first came up, only taking on the shorter version of the Hollywood sign we see today in 1949 after a renovation — 1923 was indeed quite an eventful year. Of course, the movies that were released during the year did complete justice to all the hype surrounding it! From mega projects like The Ten Commandments to the fun yet

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures revealed the first round of exhibits for its 2022-2023 season on Monday, including a tribute to Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film “The Godfather” and its first permanent exhibit, “Hollywoodland,” dedicated to the founders of Hollywood.
Other newly announced additions to the museum include “Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898-1971,” a tribute to French filmmaker Agnès Varda and spaces dedicated to “Boyz n the Hood” (1991), “Casablanca” (1942) and the collaborations of production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer.
“The history of film is endlessly rich and varied, which is why we envisioned the exhibitions of the Academy Museum as a continually evolving set of installations and virtual content,” said Bill Kramer, director and president of the Academy Museum. “We are delighted to present a new round of stories, explorations, moving images, props, and other objects that explore the many facets of moviemaking – from the founding of Hollywood to present day.

Six months after the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened to a chorus of critics sending mixed messages about its lack of scope and choices of representation, museum director Bill Kramer is revealing a full season of programs through 2022-2023 that include the previously announced “Regeneration: Black Cinema 1898–1971” and new permanent exhibition “Hollywoodland,” that will focus on the predominantly Jewish founders of the early Hollywood studio system and how their personal narratives shaped the movies their studios produced.
“Hollywoodland” will open in late Spring 2023, and will trace the history of filmmaking in Los Angeles to the beginning of the 20th century. According to the release, “it will foreground the ways in which the birth of the American film industry — and therefore the projected depiction of the American Dream — is truly an immigrant story.”

Ben Affleck is an accomplished actor, producer, writer and director, proven by his two Academy Awards. So why does social media chatter generally refer to each of his new and effective outings worthy of Oscars consideration as a “comeback?”
In the middle of his newest film “The Last Duel,” it dawned on me. Nothing regarding his interpretation of Count Pierre d’Alençon should work with his sensibilities as an actor. Yet he completely steals the show in one of three segments designed to belong to Jacques Le Gris (played by Adam Driver). Unfortunately, the Hollywood machine, critics and consumers have taken his abilities for granted. Perhaps it was the paparazzi’s focus on Bennifer or his openness regarding his struggles with sobriety. Either way, he’s shown himself, on multiple occasions, an uncommonly invigorating actor when placed in the right hands.

Kate: It’s not meant to be.Alex: No. Don’t say that. Something must’ve happened.A decade and a half is not really long enough to commemorate a film’s anniversary—but then again, bogus nostalgia for the immediate past is the main engine of pop culture discourse today. So here’s a wild proposition: what if 2006 was the last great year for adventurous, bigger-budget movies? It’s impossible to answer, of course, but consider these studio releases: Marie-Antoinette, Children of Men, Southland Tales, Clint Eastwood’s Iwo Jima diptych, Inside Man, Miami Vice, Idlewild, Crank, Idiocracy, The Holiday, The Black Dahlia. Millions were spent on bizarre highbrow and/or vanity projects like Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep, Soderbergh’s The Good German, Tommy Lee Jones’ (phenomenal) The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, or Ryan Murphy’s (excruciating) Running With Scissors. Is this a thrilling, Chinatown-like Hollywood mystery, or a semi-docu about the making of the first TV Superman show? Or is it going to shed light on the mysterious death of actor George Reeves, the childhood hero we couldn’t believe had died by his own hand? Allen Coulter’s well-crafted show has a lot to say and says it well with an excellent cast… yet it needed something it doesn’t deliver. If you don’t require your movieland mysteries tied up in a neat bow, this could fit the bill.

If you mourn the days when montage was king or have wondered why magic hour lens flare shots seemed to fall out of vogue, then you can fill your boots with Finding The Way Back as director Gavin O'Connor and his cinematographer Eduard Grau use old-fashioned techniques to take on the old-fashioned formula of an alcoholic coach falling and rising in this serviceable bounce around the basketball court.
Ben Affleck has long-since proved he's not just a pretty face, with the likes of Argo, Gone Girl and Hollywoodland and he reinforces that here, as he sinks into the slightly out-of-shape, bearded and puffy-faced Jack Cunningham - a one-time school basketball star who has now hit the bottle so hard he drinks vodka from a coffee cup at his building site job and cradles cans of beer in the shower. The lived-in look suits Affleck, somehow allowing him -...

Back in 2006, Ben Affleck was on the big screen in Hollywoodland, seen at the time as his comeback role after the Bennifer whirlwind and which culminated six years later with the multi-award winning Argo. There’s more than a whiff of a comeback about his latest offering, Finding The Way Back, a film that follows a somewhat fallow period post-Batman, echoes his own, well documented personal problems and has a title that’s more than a little apt.
The set-up merges an under-dog sports drama with a father and son story. It’s a potentially powerful combination, tailor-made to play on your emotions and director, Gavin O’Connor, who worked with Affleck on The Accountant, makes no apology for aiming at them throughout. The under-dogs in question are the basketball team at Bishops Hayes High School, no-hopers in a league that’s every bit as competitive as a professional one. They get a new coach,...

Ben Affleck celebrates his 47th birthday on August 15, 2019. Though he’s best known as an actor, the two-time Oscar winner has excelled in a variety of fields, including writing, directing and producing. But how many of his titles remain classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1972, Affleck first gained notice as a hot young actor with supporting performances in movies such as “School Ties” (1992), “Dazed and Confused” (1993) and “Mallrats” (1995). He shot to stardom when he and his lifelong friend, Matt Damon, decided to write a couple of plum roles for themselves in the inspirational drama “Good Will Hunting” (1997). Doug Jones wants to make it clear he has no ill will against the upcoming “Hellboy” movie, which reboots the comic book character on the big screen after two adaptations from writer-director Guillermo del Toro. The “Star Trek: Discovery” actor and del Toro favorite played Abe Sabien in 2004’s “Hellboy” and its 2008 sequel “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” In an interview with Popcorn Talk, Jones called out publications for running stories back in February that made it appear he had turned down a cameo in the new “Hellboy” movie because he was bitter the franchise got taken away from del Toro. The director’s plan for a “Hellboy 3” never materialized.
“The Hollywood Reporter article I think was written with a bit of a slant to it,” Jones said. “I think the headline says, ‘Doug Jones says no thanks to the new Hellboy,’ right? And that sounded evil. That sounded to me like me going,...

The highly acclaimed and award-winning Broadway musical Jekyll and Hyde is coming to the big screen. After decades on the stage and being toured through 28 countries, the movie is being adapted, written, and produced by Alexander Dinelaris, who has produced some incredible movies that include Hollywoodland, Birdman, and The Revenant. He also co-wrote Birdman, winning the Oscar for best original screenplay. So it sounds like the script is in capable hands.
The Broadway musical was loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” about Dr. Jekyll, who is battling with his alter ego, Mr. Hyde, in a struggle between good and evil.
Jekyll and Hyde was conceived for the stage by Frank Wildhorn and Steve Cuden, featuring music by Wildhorn, a book by Leslie Bricusse, and lyrics by Wildhorn, Bricusse, and Cuden. The music from this musical is so beautiful. It’s...

Adi Shankar, the producer of Netflix’s Castlevania, says his upcoming project, Superman Vs. The Ku Klux Klan, has been indirectly energized by Bill Maher’s put-downs of comic book culture and comments about the late Stan Lee.
Shankar said the firebrand comedian’s appraisal of comic book culture as an example of “using our smarts on stupid stuff” was a welcomed jolt because it underlined the importance of burnishing the legacy and celebrating the pioneers of “nerd” culture to disprove the opinion that Maher expressed.
“The comic-book/video game industry needs our Shakespeare in Love we need our Capote and Finding Neverland,” Shankar said, referring to acclaimed dramas that turned writers into screen characters. “The founders of nerd culture must be celebrated as much as the franchises they have given birth to. It’s our history. We also need to tell stories about how these myths have had a...

Because every Gigli has a silver lining, we look at how bad movies ultimately made good things happen.
No movie is all bad. Some films seem so misguided that it’s hard to see why anyone didn't stop them being made before they cost so much time, money and talent, yet sometimes those same mistakes have led to something genuinely great further down the line.
Careers have been ruined by stinkers like After Earth and Gigli – but they’ve also been made. A really, truly, unequivocally terrible movie often makes a big impact in the film industry as everyone else scrabbles to try and avoid repeating it – shaping genres, shifting tides and making sure we never have to watch The Last Airbender again.
However bad some movies might be, there’s always a silver lining if you look for it…

Timeless will change history once more with NBC set to air a special two-hour finale to wrap up the time travel tale.
Timeless defied cancellation one last time as NBC announced that it would bring back the fan favorite time travel show for a two-hour movie, which serves as the series finale and ties up loose ends that were left dangling at the end of season two. Although the show will not live on as a weekly episodic program, this news will bring closure to fans who rallied hard to save the canceled series during San Diego Comic-Con, when an airplane flew a #SaveTimeless banner paid for by a crowdfunding campaign.
In a joint statement with fellow showrunner, Shawn Ryan, Kripke explained, “While we wish we could’ve made another dozen seasons of Timeless, this is the next best thing. We’re thrilled to take...

The second and final season of “Timeless,” NBC’s time travel drama, embraces more inclusion and diversity, including encounters with abolitionist Harriet Tubman, suffragist Alice Paul, and blues musician Robert Johnson. This greatly expanded the challenges and opportunities for costume designer Mari-An Ceo, who especially enjoyed “Hollywoodland,” in which she got to recreate Katherine Hepburn’s lavish Greek goddess gown from “The Philadelphia Story” for star Abigail Spencer.
“The stories shifted and became more evolved [this season], but this was one of my favorites,” Ceo said. “Going into Hollywood, it felt like we were making a movie and dressed all the people that worked on movies. We made hundreds of background costumes. We were on the Paramount lot and, finally, we were shooting where the place actually was supposed to be.”

When the Timeless trio travels to 1940s Hollywood this Sunday (NBC, 10/9c), Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus are forced to improvise— to varying degrees of success — in order to maintain their cover.

Production was initially shut down back in October when series star, Kevin Spacey was fired in the aftermath of a string of allegations of sexual assault and harassment against him.

Actor Caroline Dhavernas began her career in French-Canadian television, with roles that probably played big in Quebec but not many other places. After starring in some notworthy indie dramas like Edge Of Madness, however, she finally gained wider recognition on Bryan Fuller’s charming and addictive Wonderfalls, a short-lived delight of a series that almost no one saw when it was on but has found an afterlife as a cult hit. From there, she’s gone on to an impressive career, toggling comfortably between film and TV in projects like Hollywoodland, Breach, Off The Map, and most notably spending three seasons on NBC’s superlative Hannibal. We caught up with her at SXSW, where she was promoting her new indie Easy Living, about a self-destructive door-to-door makeup saleswoman. Affleck took to Facebook on Tuesday to reveal that he'd completed treatment for alcohol addiction, and thanked his wife for her support, writing, "I'm lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I've done the work I set out to do."
Et is taking a look back at the couple's long relationship to see how Garner helped Affleck turn his life around.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
From “School Ties” to “Live By Night” and this weekend’s “The Great Wall,” Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have each — for better and worse — left a considerable and ever-increasing footprint in the cultural landscape. But while the world is wide enough for both of them, our hearts are not. And so, we forced our panel of critics to choose: Ben Affleck or Matt Damon?
There can be only one.

The Batman solo movie needs a new director, as Ben Affleck has stepped down as director.
Ben Affleck will not be directing The Batman solo movie for Warner Bros. Affleck will still be playing billionaire Bruce Wayne and his alter ego in the upcoming film.
"There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement.
“Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this...

Previously: Ten years ago, Ben Affleck resuscitated his sagging movie career, first by giving a finely-tuned performance as George Reeves (also known as Superman) in Hollywoodland and then by making Gone Baby Gone, a moody mystery that was his directorial debut, the following year. While Affleck is still best known as an actor, the films he's directed since then have reflected his growing talents and ambitions. The Town showed he could handle action as well as atmospheric drama and Argo introduced a lighter touch that fit the thrills of the 1980 U.S. hostage crisis in Iran. For his next movie as a director, Affleck is rewinding the clock far deeper into the past...
