Survival horror Fall (which is now on Netflix UK) sees two extreme sports enthusiasts climb up a 2000 foot tower in the middle of the desert and get stuck at the top. It’s high-concept in every sense as the two women teeter on a tiny ledge impossibly high up while the audience feel (pleasantly?) sick and anxious the whole time.
Fall is effective and efficient. The girls are likeable, capable and make good choices (other than climbing up a 2000 foot tower in the first place…). There’s real peril, enough back story to round the characters out, but ultimately it’s girls vs tower, with some pesky buzzards thrown in for good measure. This kind of survival horror – and by that in this instance we mean a film where characters are pitted against nature or a circumstance, rather than a person, or a supernatural entity – works viscerally when it’s done well.

After almost three absurdly long years, “Stranger Things” Season 4 is just around the corner. A tentpole series for Netflix — at a whopping production cost of reportedly 30 million per episode — the fan-favorite sci-fi show that launched its young adult cast, led by Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, into superstardom will be dropping new episodes May 27.
And, according to the Emmy-winning series’ executive producer Shawn Levy, it’s going to be “harrowing,” “cinematic” and “epic.” He told TheWrap in a recent interview, “This is so much more story and runtime than ever before, not by a little. By a lot.”
The last month of spring will also see the return of reality series titles like “The Circle” — a social media-driven competition series where players catfish, befriend and flirt with each other with the aim of winning a grand cash prize — and “Bling Empire” — which centers on a group of uber-wealthy Asian American friends in Beverly Hills.

Taiwanese cinema has been producing a series of crime movies lately, and quite diverse for matter, as titles like “Godspeed” and the “Gatao” franchise highlight. Chan Chun-hao attempts his own hand in the category, adapting Feng Shi’s novel, through an approach, though, that lingers somewhere between the pulp and the soap opera.

Chung Mong-hong is one of the most exciting voices coming out of Taiwanese cinema for years now. His work, either as a director in titles such “Godspeed” and “A Sun” or as producer in “The Great Buddha+” and “Classmates Minus” is a always a pleasure to watch, particularly for the way he manages to combine mainstream themes with an art-house approach and rich sociopolitical context. “The Falls” is not an exception.

There's nothing like a good old-fashioned vow renewal to stir up a few tears.
They spent most of the hour trying to figure out how to stop August Heart and his army of Godspeed clones from destroying Central City. But The Flash saved its best content for the final scene.
"Heart of the Matter, Part 2" was the finale of The Flash Season 7, but it felt more like the last five episodes of a season condensed down into one hour. It was hard to keep up with at times, and its only saving grace was Barry and Iris and their love for one another.
The threat of Godspeed has been building in the background of this show for a couple of seasons now, and it was time for Barry finally to face off against the villain speedster.
Unfortunately, the payoff was less than satisfactory.
August, I know that things seem really hopeless right now.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Exclusive: WarnerMedia has revamped its content innovation hub WarnerMedia OneFifty, relaunching a redesigned platform focused on highlighting new content and projects from underrepresented creators. The new site features a bulked up content acquisitions and projects slate, including its recent acquisition of Tomer Shushan’s White Eye, which is nominated this year for the Live-Action Short Oscar.
The platform aims to highlight and invest in out-of-the-box ideas from creators with unique voices who will develop content across the spectrum spanning features, series, digital, animation, documentary, interactive, VR/Ar, music, transmedia, experimental, immersive and more.

Considering the political issues that torment the whole Sinophone world, and the ways all these countries (even this term is under consideration) are connected and clashing at the same time, coming up with a title and which films to include in that list is at least as difficult as winnowing the films in the list.
Despite all the turmoil, however, films of utmost quality continue to come out from this region, if even the “Hollywood of the East” (aka Hong Kong) is definitely not in the place it used to be during the 90s, with the fact that Chinese “Better Days” and Taiwanese “A Sun” are shortlisted for the Oscar for Foreign Movie, highlighting the fact in the most eloquent fashion.

It’s hard to imagine how a staggering two-and-a-half-hour epic from an established auteur could play the Toronto International Film Festival, win the most prestigious movie award from its country of origin, receive a simultaneous worldwide release, and still manage to almost completely escape the attention of American critics, but the strange and singularly modern fate that befell Chung Mong-hong’s “A Sun” will only become more familiar in a world so flooded with content that even major works of art can sink into the murk like shipwrecks. Movies have never been more accessible, and they’ve never been harder to find.
If this particular case is uncommonly illustrative of the situation at hand, that’s because of the disconnect between the specialness of the movie and the indifference with which it was dropped into the bottom of the streaming world’s biggest ocean. It’s understandable that most critics...

When The Flash returns for its seventh season, it’ll be bringing back some fan favorite villains thanks to new time travel shenanigans. We don’t know all that much about the next run of the hit CW show right now as, though production is underway, it’s generally been kept under wraps so far. But one star of the series has teased that we can expect a few of the Scarlet Speedster’s old enemies to cause havoc in Central City once again.
Actress Danielle Nicolet – who plays Cecille Horton – virtually attended Comic-Con Experience Sao Paulo and promised that the upcoming batch of episodes will involve time travel somehow and that this will lead to a few “bad guy favorites” stopping by in season 7.

HBO Max is serving up a lot of great new movies this October. Fittingly for the spooky season, the Warner Bros. streaming service is adding a fair few classic horrors to its library next month, but there’s really something for everyone going up – from comedies to romances to sci-fi to superhero films.
Speaking of that last genre, DC lovers will be pleased to note that 2013’s Man of Steel, the movie that kicked off the Dceu, is among the titles arriving on October 1st. Besides that, there’s a bunch of animated DC pics dropping the same day, including Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and All-Star Superman. 2005’s Constantine featuring Keanu Reeves, meanwhile, also debuts on the service from the 1st.

Fans of both artists will know that Blake has some familiarity with the track, as he produced, arranged and played piano on Ocean’s original version of “Godspeed” for his 2016 album Blonde. After initially covering the song in a snippet on Instagram Live, Blake decided to release a full version of “Godspeed” when the snippet went viral on TikTok.

2016 has been very interesting year for all of the sinophone world, with a plethora of very interesting productions, both cinematically (Tharlo) and in terms of controversy (Ten Years). Art-house and Hk action could not be missing, while Derek Tsang directed a very impressive drama (SoulMate).
With a focus on diversity, here are the best Sinophone films of 2016, in random order. Some films may have premiered in 2015, but since they became widely known in 2016, are also included. Films like “The Tenants Downastairs”, “Godspeed” and “The Summer is Gone” seem like films that could have also been included, but since I have not watched them, I could not put them in this list.

Former atomic blonde Charlize Theron goes nuclear brunette to play Andromache the Scythian (call her Andy for short), a centuries-old warrior who’s getting weary of fighting the good fight into the violent present. As per screenwriter Greg Rucka’s graphic novel, Andy leads a tight group of dedicated immortal mercenaries that include Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), a member since 1817, and Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marinelli), a gay couple who’ve been head over heels in love since the Crusades. James Blake added Nirvana to his quarantine cover roster with a rendition of “Come As You Are,” performed on a benefit livestream this past Sunday. The cover, requested by a fan, got the full James Blake treatment, which is pretty simple: a piano setup and a lovely crooning voice.
Blake has done quite a few covers over livestream during the Covid-19 pandemic, including Radiohead’s “No Surprises,” Billie Eilish’s “When the Party’s Over,” Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed,” Ray Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind,” Roberta Flack’s “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,...

“A Sun” is another high-quality production of Taiwanese Studio Mandarin Vision (“The Great Buddha+” 2017). The two and a half-hour long crime drama directed by Mong-Hong Chung (“Godspeed” 2016) has been selected for the Netflix catalog and was the big winner of the 2019 Golden Horse Film Festival including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Leading Actor.
Coming from the homeland of the great Edward Yang, the story incorporates many similar topics such as broken families, lost youth, and the ultimate road to redemption. It all starts with a gritty scene of violence in which A-Ho, played by Wu Chien-Ho (“Xiao Mei” 2018), attacks a young man in a neon trenched back ally store of a dark city. As a result, he is sent away to a juvenile detention center and his father A-Wen decides to cut ties with him and solely focuses on his driving teacher job and the eldest son,...

One of the constants of The Flash is the regular supply of villainous speedsters Barry has to face off against, acting as dark mirrors to himself and his own powers. The most recent of these, Godspeed, has been only a recurring threat, but that might change in season 7.
Speaking to TV Line, showrunner Eric Wallace was asked if Team Flash would ever encounter the real Godspeed, as until now they’ve only battled his barely sentient drones. And his response was as follows:
“Yes, you just might, because that’s where we’re going!”
Of course, the brief comment doesn’t actually specify that Godspeed will be the season’s big bad, although since the evil speedsters Reverse Flash, Zoom and Savitar dominated the show’s early seasons, it’s been a while since one’s been a lingering danger.

After nearly a half-dozen fake-outs, The Flash will finally face off against a most formidable foe from the comics.
The CW’s No. 1 series first teased the introduction of the white-and-gold clad Godspeed during Season 5, when Barry and Iris’ daughter Nora, in the year 2049, bested the sinister speedster with a good amount of help from the imprisoned Eobard Thawne aka Reverse-Flash.

And you thought Crisis on Infinite Earths was going to be the end of The Flash? Think again! The CW had already confirmed The Flash Season 7 renewal back in January, only halfway through the show’s sixth season. The Flash Season 7 renewal news came alongside renewals for fellow Arrowverse shows Batwoman, Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl, as well as Nancy Drew, All American, Charmed, Dynasty, Legacies, Roswell, Nm, and Riverdale.
“These early orders for next season give our production teams a head start in plotting out story arcs and a jump on hiring staff, and this also provides us with a strong foundation of established, fan-favorite CW shows to build on for next season,” said CW President Mark Pedowitz back in January. “We’ve been thrilled with the creative direction of all three new series, and even though we are in the very early stages of our new full stack streaming strategy,...

The CW has now released the synopsis for “Pay the Piper,” the eighteenth and – it turns out – penultimate episode of The Flash season 6. Though there were to have been a bunch of episodes after it originally, it isn’t actually a bad second-to-last installment for the season as it sees the return of two key rogues from the Scarlet Speedster’s gallery – Godspeed and, as you can guess from the title, Pied Piper.
The synopsis teases that Barry Allen will turn to old ally Hartley Rathaway for help when evil speedster August Heart returns to Central City, only to have to overcome a tragic change brought about by “Crisis on Infinite Earths” – the pair no longer had their reconciliation in this timeline and are still mortal enemies.
“Godspeed And Pied Piper Return – When Godspeed returns, Barry (Grant Gustin) turns to Hartley Rathaway (guest star Andy Mientus) for help. However, things...

James Blake played a solo rendition of Radiohead’s “No Surprises” on Monday, tackling the Ok Computer anthem during a livestreamed Instagram performance.
The singer-songwriter — a noted Radiohead fan who previously covered In Rainbows‘ “Videotape” onstage — magnified the song’s melancholy core with his stripped-down take. Over rich piano chords, the singer-songwriter ascended to a fluttering falsetto as he sang about “a heart that’s full up like a landfill, a job that slowly kills you.”
Fans were clearly onboard with his version, replying on Instagram with a flurry of crying face and heart emojis.

The Flash introduced one of the most prominent new villains from recent Scarlet Speedster comics into the Arrowverse last year in the form of Godspeed. Despite his popularity though, the foe has only appeared twice on the show to date. His third appearance is on its way, however, with set pics revealing that The CW series is currently working on a new Godspeed episode.
The following image, courtesy of Canadagraphs, proves that the white-suited wicked speedster is returning to terrorize Team Flash and Central City yet again. It’s believed that episode 18 of season 6 is currently being shot, so it’s neat that Godspeed is returning here as he made his debut in episode 18 of season 5.

It's billed as a sequel to Cloverfield, but is 10 Cloverfield Lane all it seems? We take a look at the subject of unrelated sequels...
In an era where it's just about impossible to make a high-profile movie without at least something leaking onto the web, producer Jj Abrams seems to have pulled off the ultimate coup in recent months: he and his company Bad Robot have secretly created a follow-up, of sorts, to the 2008 hit monster movie, Cloverfield.
On the 15th January, a trailer landed for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a claustrophobic horror thriller that Abrams described in a statement to Collider as a "blood relative" of that earlier film directed by Matt Reeves.
The premise is this: Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character, Michelle, is injured in a car accident and wakes up in a bunker with 40-something survivalist, Howard (John Goodman).

There's a distinct sub-genre of horror/thrillers that can be easily described as "trapped in a Blank" movies, and you've probably seen most of them. Trapped on a ski lift? Frozen. Trapped underground? Buried. Trapped in a phone booth? Um, well, Phone Booth. Trapped in the ocean? Open Water or Open Water 2: Adrift. Trapped in a car? Try Wrecked with Adrien Brody or Brake with Stephen Dorff. And then of course there's the recent non-classic Atm, which is about four young idiots trapped in an Atm vestibule. It's a very simple hook, you see, whether you're a clever filmmaker or you're a lazy producer who simply wants to piggyback on, well, a very simple hook. Which brings us to the newest entry into this claustrophobic catalog: 247°F, which is about three young idiots who get trapped in a sauna. Ostensibly based on a true story and boasting one of the clunkiest,...
