One of the best children's shows of all time!

I was raised without a father, so for me, starting around 1953 until my mom married my stepfather in 1960, it was Sheriff John who was my boyhood hero and role model. He had strength of character and had a reassuring voice, but he was also very gentle and I felt he really cared about us kids. In those days, television was live and he would show your photo and announce your name on the air. He knew when it was your birthday and he knew your friends. Though "low tech" by todays standards and the cartoons were in black and white, Sheriff John remains in my memories as the strong, gentle man who I wanted to grow up to be like more than anyone else. A great man.

We Were Kids

Growing up in any area that received TV stations from Los Angeles, ALL Boomers will remember Sheriff John. He wasn't high-tech, and didn't really have any nifty side-kicks, but he showed those really neat Crusader Rabbit Cartoons. He sang the same theme song every day "Laugh and Be Happy" and of course that great "Birthday Song." any Boomer worth his salt that grew up in that area can STILL sing those songs!!! Sheriff John always had a well balanced lunch and told you what he would be having tomorrow so you could eat along with him. Even when I got in High School, on sick days, I'd sit and watch the old Sheriff. Even then it brought back memories of good times past. Sheriff John was/is a great guy.

I was one of the Birthday Kids
diansingh12 February 2017
In October 1954, Sheriff John personally wished me happy birthday on the air.

To all the children that he made birthday wishes to, we received autographed pictures from him.

On this website is the picture he sent to me as well as the envelope that he sent it to me in. At that time, I was Thelma Dian Helfer. Now I am Dian Van Patten.

I also have his original music sheets. Wonderful man, and an inspiration to every kid who grew up in LA at that time. My cousin was able to attend his funeral.

Childhood favorite

My sister and I would eat lunch with Sheriff John every weekday. He and Hobo Kelly were a big part of my early childhood.
