“The Strangers” marketing campaign got a little too strange.
Around 11:30 p.m. Pt Tuesday night, TikTok shut down Lionsgate’s page after a promotional livestream for the studio’s upcoming horror-franchise prequel “The Strangers – Chapter 1” was found to have violated the social media platform’s terms of service.
The video was removed. In its place, a TikTok alert read: “We do not allow showing or promoting dangerous activities and challenges. This includes dares, games, tricks, inappropriate use of dangerous tools, eating substances that are harmful to one’s health, or similar activities that may lead to significant physical harm.”
A Lionsgate spokesperson did not respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on the stream being taken down.
The Lionsgate TikTok page has been restored. On it are five videos promoting the film, but no livestream.

Horror has been one of the most reliable genres at the box office since the pandemic began. Even movies like "The Wretched" helped keep the industry's pulse going while most theaters were shut down in 2020. Unfortunately, 2024 has, up to this point, not produced a major break-out hit yet, with only indie success stories like "Immaculate" and "Late Night with the Devil" to celebrate. We've yet to have a "Smile" ($22.6 million domestic opening/$217 million global finish) or a "M3GAN" ($30.4 million domestic opening/$180 million worldwide). Lionsgate, however, hopes to change that with the release of "The Strangers: Chapter 1."
Directed by Renny Harlin, this is the first entry in a new trilogy of films that will reboot the franchise started by director Bryan Bertino in 2008 with his home invasion classic "The Strangers." As the title implies, "Chapter 1" is just the first entry in the trilogy, which has already been completely filmed.

Movie promotion can get more creative these days with the use of social media. Sometimes, staged moments in public also enhance the “viral” intention. Years ago, stories made the rounds of creepy clown sightings spotted in neighborhood areas, complete with haunting pictures of said clowns standing eerily still. The sensation coincidentally would do wonders for the release of the It films, and similar viral marketing was attempted with the Ghostface killer for the new Scream movies. Low and behold, The Strangers – Chapter 1 is about to be released by Lionsgate and the movie is all about property invasion by mysteriously scary figures.
The new film from Renny Harlin is getting in on the action as costumed killer characters were seen at Coachella as well as creepy viral footage of these characters appearing on Ring cameras as they stalk on doorsteps. People Magazine has now reported that Lionsgate would attempt to reach...

We always love a good viral marketing campaign, and with Lionsgate gearing up to release The Strangers: Chapter 1 in theaters on May 17, they’re pulling out all the stops this month.
The three masked slashers from the franchise – known as Pinup Girl, Dollface and the Man in the Mask – have been showing up on home security cameras across the country!
Videos and images posted to Tiktok, Twitter, and even Next Door have been documenting the sightings, one of which is a creepy doorbell cam video of a roommate who was allegedly followed home by the masked trio earlier this month. Another video sees them lurking around outside of a gas station, eventually stopping to look directly into the security camera.
The Strangers were also spotted standing outside the Manhattan Criminal Court House, making for “a strange, slightly unsettling scene,” as one Twitter user perfectly described it.

Four months of horror releases down, eight to go! With our 2024 Horror Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the other horror movies we can’t wait to check out this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they’re likely to show up at some point in 2024. Here we go:

Director Renny Harlin has been talking about a supercut of his new The Strangers films, with all three landing inside 12 months.
We aren’t too far away now from the release of The Strangers: Chapter 1, with the slasher prequel set to land in UK cinemas on 17th May. The film will serve as an origin story to the 2008 home invasion horror that starred Liv Tyler. While horror origin prequels are certainly nothing new, there is something a little different about the release strategy that Lionsgate is adopting for the upcoming film.
The film’s director – Renny Harlin – has confirmed that the second entry in the series will arrive in September or October of this year, while a third concluding entry will be released at the beginning of 2025. It seems to be the opportunity to go into the project knowing that he would get to make all three films that excited Harlin,...

Like many of you, I was scratching my head when I learned that director Renny Harlin would be making not one, not two, but three movies based on the horror cult classic The Strangers. While a pretty slick horror flick, the original spawned a modest follow-up that didn’t get a ton of buzz. When it came out, I figured it was a series that had run its course. It seems this is not so, with Lionsgate releasing a widely ambitious trilogy of horror films this year (it’s like the horror version of Kevin Costner’s Horizon).
Notably, it marks the return of director Renny Harlin to the horror genre. Now mostly known for his action films, such as the classics Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and many more – horror was where he made his original reputation. Prison, which gave Viggo Mortensen his first leading role,...

A new article published on Variety this afternoon details Lionsgate’s ambitious plans for their relaunch of The Strangers franchise, which kicks off with The Strangers: Chapter 1 in theaters on May 17, 2024. The new movie begins a brand new story that will continue in two subsequent sequels, one expected this coming Fall and the next likely to arrive in early 2025.
All three films were directed by Renny Harlin (A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Master, Deep Blue Sea), with the new trilogy centered on Madelaine Petsch’s Maya, who drives cross-country with her boyfriend Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest.
When their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they’re forced to spend the night in a secluded Airbnb, where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked strangers.
The project originally began as one massive script before being split up into three feature films,...

In horror, bodies are usually split into parts, not the movies themselves.
Lots of slasher icons are revived for sequel upon sequel over the years but very few franchises — in any genre — have released a trilogy of movies within one year. Lionsgate’s “The Strangers” is breaking down the door in an ambitious, three-chapter strategy to give horror fans a never-before-seen horror “odyssey.”
This isn’t the first time “The Strangers” has come sneaking into theaters. The original 2008 film, inspired by real-life break-ins and the Charles Manson murders, starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a not-so-happy couple who get an unwelcome knock at their door in the middle of the night. They turn away a creepy woman asking “Is Tamara home?” but are soon plagued by masked, knife-wielding home invaders. The movie became a sleeper hit, making $82 million off a $9 million budget, and 10 years it later spawned a sequel,...

Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and this past weekend they continued their viral marketing approach to promoting the movie. When the South by Southwest festivals were held in Austin, Texas last month, the Strangers were spotted around the city. When the music and arts festival Coachella was going on in Indio, California, the Strangers showed up there, too. Over the weekend, the Stagecoach Festival – which is described as “country music’s biggest party” was also held in Indio… and the Strangers crashed that party as well. Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and with that date just three weeks away the Motion Picture Association ratings board has announced that they’ve given the film an R rating for “horror violence, language and brief drug use.” That puts it pretty much in line with the ratings to the previous two movies in the Strangers franchise. Released in 2008, The Strangers was rated R for violence/terror and language. The Strangers: Prey at Night followed in 2018 and was rated R for horror violence and terror throughout, and for language.

"I know you think you found something out there. Or something found him..." Vertical has revealed a full official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Refuge, made by the acclaimed Finnish action filmmaker Renny Harlin - also of The Strangers; Chapter 1. Apparently he was already in Bulgaria shooting Ninja Fury when local producers contacted him about making Refuge next. After a mysterious attack from a malevolent demon during his tour of duty in Afghanistan, Sergeant Rick Pedroni returns home a changed man, and more dangerous than ever. This is similar to many other solider-returns-home-damaged films but with a supernatural Ptsd twist. The film stars Aston McAuley as Rick, Sophie Simnet as his wife Kate, Raza Jaffrey, Johanna Harlin, Shervin Alenabi, Atanas Srebrev, Max Kraus, and Jason Flemyng. This mostly looks like generic horror mashed up with a soldier story, though it does have some scary scenes in it. // Continue...

Joel Edgerton is playing a physicist who cannot control (or fathom) the constraints of the scientific world once he wakes up in a parallel reality.
Edgerton executives produces and stars in Apple TV+ sci-fi series “Dark Matter,” based on Blake Crouch’s novel of the same name. Author Crouch adapts his own book for the screen, penning the pilot of the nine-episode series and serving as showrunner.
The official logline reads: “There are infinite realities. This is the one where Jason Dessen (Edgerton) kidnaps himself.”
“Dark Matter” centers on Edgerton’s Jason Dessen, who is a physicist, professor, and family man. That is, until one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago, he’s abducted into an alternate version of his life. One of the scariest home invasion movies of all time, Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers terrified audiences with its chilling simplicity back in 2008, introducing three masked killers who torment, torture and ultimately murder a young couple at an isolated home in the woods. A full ten years later, the characters returned in a sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night.
And six years after that movie, the masked murderers are back in director Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1, the first movie in a brand new trilogy that will reboot the franchise.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 will be playing in theaters nationwide on May 17, 2024, but when can we expect The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter 3?
We don’t yet have release dates for either of those two sequels, but producer Courtney Solomon announced at WonderCon this month that at least Chapter 2 is coming This Year.

It’s always fun to discuss horror novels that Aren’T Stephen King. No knock on the monster from Maine, he’s the master of horror novels over the last, oh I don’t know, 50 years, for a reason but its nice to not have the show be solely dedicated to his adapted works. He says knowing that he makes the schedule and decides what books to cover. See you in May, Mr. King! Funnily enough, the man actually loved today’s subject to the degree that he called it one of 2006’s best horror novels, but more on that in a little bit. The Ruins (watch it Here) was one of those hot properties by an author whose previous work was an instant success with critics, fans, and studio executives that put it to celluloid. The book came out and just two years later we were given a movie...

Director Bryan Bertino crafted a classic of the home invasion genre when "The Strangers" hit theaters in 2010. Now, Lionsgate has teamed up with director Renny Harlin ("Deep Blue Sea") to revamp the franchise with not just one movie, but an entire trilogy that will not just remake the first film, but further explore these mysterious killers across three full movies. The studio is deeply committed, as all three movies are already in the can. Hence, they brought some new footage from "The Strangers: Chapter 1" to this year's CinemaCon, and I was on hand to see what they had to show us. Buckle up, horror fans.
Harlin explained in an interview with /Film that he hopes to "answer some of those questions that I think all of us who enjoyed the original were left wondering" such as "Why? Who were the Strangers? Why did they do this? Is this completely really random,...

There are only a few more weeks until the first chapter of Renny Harlin's reboot of the horror franchise, The Strangers, kicks off a trilogy of films. Lionsgate sent out new character posters for the home invading trio: Pin-up Girl, Dollface and Scarecrow. Check them out in the gallery below. Also, a clip of security footage was sent along as well. Because of the aspect ratio it defaulted into a YouTube short and I'm too old and too tired at this point in the day to figure out how to share that with you folks other than to point you in the direction of the link here. There is no The Strangers franchise without Bryan Bertino, who directed the original home invasion movie that paved the way for a sequel and now a reboot trilogy later this year.
Bertino (The Dark and the Wicked) is also making his own return to the horror genre with the upcoming Vicious, which has Dakota Fanning (The Watchers) on board to star.
Vicious has already been dated for release on August 8, 2025, and Deadline brings us another update this week. For starters, Devyn Nekoda (Scream VI) will also star.
Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things), Mary McCormack (The West Wing), Rachel Blanchard (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Klea Scott (Millennium), and Emily Mitchell (Ordinary Angels) have also joined the cast of Bryan Bertino’s Vicious, which is a Paramount production.

Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

What if “Friday the 13th” was told through Jason Voorhees’ point of view?
First-time feature writer/director Chris Nash’s slasher “In a Violent Nature” focuses on undead serial killer Johnny (Ry Barrett) who stalks new victims in the woods. The killing spree is spurred by the removal of a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a spirit seeking revenge after a horrific 60-year old crime. Johnny’s body is resurrected and he becomes hellbent on retrieving the jewelry from a group of vacationing teens. The only way to do it? Methodically slaughtering them one by one. Classic Johnny.

With Lionsgate's new The Strangers remake on its way, some audiences are wondering if the events of the movie and its original counterpart are based on actual events.
The original 2008 film starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as Kristen and James, a couple whose time alone in an isolated vacation home turns into horror not long after receiving a knock on their door.
The upcoming 2024 remake, titled The Strangers: Chapter 1, will be a close retelling of the same tale. This time, the poor couple in for a bad night are Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez’s Maya and Ryan.

"Knock, knock!" "Who's there?" "Abject terror." "Abject terror who?" No, not actually the start of a joke, but the basic premise for The Strangers: Chapter 1, which here launches a fresh take on the home invasion horror concept first launched by Bryan Bertino in 2008's The Strangers. With Renny Harlin in the director's chair of what is planned as the kick-off for a trilogy, the trailer has stalked online:
Written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, The Strangers: Chapter 1 is focused on young couple Maya (Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez), who are taking a road trip as part of their move to the West Coast. After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple (Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez) are forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive in The Strangers ― Chapter 1, the chilling first entry of this upcoming horror feature film series. Lionsgate has released the official trailer and poster for the first film in the ambitious horror trilogy, The Strangers: Chapter 1. Ambitious in the sense that Reny Harlin is filming three horror flicks back to back to back. Also courageous, that he's doing so with a horror franchise that is pretty well liked. No pressure, Reny. Nearly 16 years after Bryan Bertino's The Strangers shocked cinemas (moments from that movie still linger in my mind rent-free), it's time to "witness how the strangers became the strangers" in the trailer for The Strangers: Chapter 1 ahead of its May 17th theatrical release via Lionsgate.
Directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Alan R. Cohen & Alan Freedland and a story by Bryan Bertino (and based on The Strangers written by Bryan Bertino), The Strangers: Chapter 1 stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Guitierrez, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath. The film is produced by Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Alastair Burlingham, and Charlie Dombek.

"Why are you doing this to us?!" "Because you're here." Lionsgate has revealed the first official trailer for a horror sequel titled The Strangers: Chapter 1, arriving in theaters starting this May. It's the next sequel in The Strangers horror series, but it's also the start of a brand new trilogy, sort of a re-imagining but using the same premise of creepy, masked people showing up at a home. Madelaine Petsch & Froy Gutierrez star as a couple who come into contact with the three psychopathic masked strangers while on a roadtrip through Oregon. Serving as the third film in The Strangers series created by Bryan Bertino, it's also the first installment of a new trilogy of standalone sequel films, where Chapter 1 will follow a similar premise to the the first film and takes place in the same continuity as the first two installments. This is directed by action master Renny Harlin,...
