Unbelievably Silly & A Lot Of Fun To Watch
ccthemovieman-130 August 2007
I liked the premise of this: an actor dressed as a mummy-like "Creature From the Black Lagoon," racing out to a hospital to see his wife deliver their first kid, not stopping to change his ludicrous outfit.

This episode is unbelievably silly but that's what makes it fun. It is SO preposterous you just have to laugh out loud in a number of spots.

The man has car trouble, stops at this out-of- the-way hillbilly gas station where the guy in the store just happens to be watching a mummy movie and our hero does everything the guy on the screen does! It gets worse....far worse....as the story turns into a Frankenstein parody. Overall, there were so many wild scenes and stupid things that all I could do was shake my head....and laugh.

It's Really Funny!
Hitchcoc20 May 2014
A man playing a mummy in a cheesy movie has to leave the set because his wife is about to give birth. In his panic, he doesn't take the time to remove the bandages that are his make-up (actually, the director doesn't want him to take the time because he would have to be re-bandaged when he returns to the set). So off he goes. Now there are a series of pratfalls involving a bunch of hillbillies that think he is the representation of a legend who set out to lynch him, an old blind man who actually has a mummy in a sarcophagus, and the "real" mummy himself. The hillbillies are excellent. A recurring bit is when a prissy matronly woman (probably a school teacher) tries to talk the guys out of what they are doing. They listen intently and then go ahead with their evil scams. Another highlight is when they discuss how to kill a mummy and keep getting it mixed up with Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and the werewolf. The final scene in the episode is priceless with one of the greatest exit lines ever.

Fun and exciting episode that's done in a classic kind of way!
blanbrn14 March 2019
This "AS" episode from season one called "Mummy Daddy" is one that was fun to watch an adventure escape like episode that takes a fun twist and makes all involved happy. It involves an overworked actor playing a mummy on a swamp southern set, who needs to get away to the local hospital before his wife goes into labor. All starts to go crazy when the locals spot him and think he's an actual creature the chase is on, only a different character is on the loose and the episode twist and takes a happy clever turn. Overall well done episode of the series.

We watch this 1/2 hour sleeper once each year! Amazing!
wjgold-120 July 2007
We didn't get too excited about any other Amazing Stories episodes except this one. Just one time, and we were smitten! It instantly became a FAVORITE! It's funny all the way through every time. The plot is ingenious with lots of humorous cuts on human behavior - crowd behavior, hopefully overdone compared to reality. Tom Harrison does very well as the Mummy. Even though you never see his face, his actions and words and tones of voice are hilarious, clever, and convincingly serious. The setting is eerie - with darkness, fog, realistic swamp, graveyard, small-town setting, etc. This is a see watch at least once - to see if you are like our whole family - ready to watch it again about once each year.

Warning: Spoilers
My all-time favorites of the Amazing Stories series. This poor expectant father/actor gets the call his wife is in labor, with no time to change out of his mummy costume. Little does he know there's a local legend that turns his trip to the hospital into a virtual "witch" hunt (only it's a "mummy" hunt). He's all under wraps and unable to speak up for himself during lynchings and an hilarious outtake from Young Frankenstein. He changes transportation, as I recall, about four times, but will any of them be able to transport this poor mummy from the set of his movie to father-hood alive? You have got to see this and find out. I don't recommend popcorn during this one. You'll choke.

This was and remains one of my favorite show episodes of all time! One of the best lines was, "mummies ain't got no necks!" I will buy the current DVD set just for this show! I had recorded this once on either Beta or VHS and now they have reworked it into a 5.1 version on a four disk DVD set that retails for $40 but can be had for less. In this episode which os only 30 minutes or less, is hilarious from start to finish. There are a number of character actors in this episode and they add some real redneck humor. And then there is the real mummy who appears and only adds to the dramedy. One key to the humor is how the actor's costume (the mummy bandages) prevent him from being understood and just makes everyone believe he truly is a mummy. But, of course, we catch glimmers of what he says and that only adds to the humor. When I started this review - my first I believe), I had no idea of the ten line minimum and I hope I haven't belabored how I feel about this episode!

A mummy becomes a daddy
sonnyschlaegel13 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
A film crew are shooting a horror movie at night in a backwater swamp area. Harold plays the monster, a mummy. During a break, the director tells him that there's a local legend about a real mummy haunting the swamps: a Gypsy Circus came to the area and they showed the mummy of an evil Egyptian king, Ra Amin Ka. One day, the mummy came alive, and it is said that it is still at large.

Then Harold gets a call from the hospital telling him his wife is in labor. He drives off without taking time to change his clothes. When the backwater people see him, they think he is Ra Amin Ka, and it gets very difficult for him to reach the hospital...

I liked this episode very much. The difficulties Harold faces when the backwater people chase him are very funny. There are lots of good gags; I especially liked the one about the number plates of Harold's car. And there even appears a second monster from Old Egypt. Everything is well done in my opinion, for example the sets/locations and the lighting create just the right atmosphere.

I think if you like funny monster stories you will like this one very much.

A really amusing, super silly episode.
TOMNEL30 March 2007
An actor portraying a mummy learns that his wife is having the baby and has to get to the hospital. On this same night an actual mummy comes to life, a group of people chase down this actor mummy and an odd comedic adventure ensues. The material itself is really super silly, but in the end it's very entertaining. The back-up cast is great including Brion James, Tracey Walters, Bronson Pinchot and even Len Lesser (Uncle Leo from Seinfeld). The fun, bouncy musical score for this episode is done by Danny Elfman. Though this may not be the best "Amazing Stories" entry, it certainly is one of the lightest ones.

My rating: *** out of ****. 24 mins. TVPG

Enjoyable and quite silly
planktonrules22 June 2015
The show begins on location. A mummy movie is being filmed and all is well. However, the actor playing the mummy learns that his wife is in labor and he rushes to the hospital. In his haste, he doesn't change and since he looks very real, folks along the way are scared to death to see what they think is a live mummy! To add to the confusion, a REAL mummy!

This episode has a paper-thin story and no depth whatsoever. However, this doesn't really matter because it IS fun--a lot of fun. Compared to the previous mostly poor episodes, this is a VAST improvement in the show and is one that has aged better than most episodes as well. Worth seeing and incredibly silly.

Brash and overbearing
Leofwine_draca10 November 2016
MUMMY DADDY is an early episode of AMAZING STORIES and a brash, overbearing comedy about a film crew shooting a horror movie. The director of said film crew is none other than Bronson Pinchot, that annoying French guy who turned up in a few films from the era. The lead actor is a mummy who never gets the chance to take his costume off, but when familial obligations force him to leave the set and visit a local town, the locals mistake him for the real deal.

Yep, this tale is as dumb as it sounds and it has the kind of loud, overbearing character humour that only Americans are going to enjoy. Me, I found it overbearing and annoying, with never a line spoken when it could be shouted instead, and lots of nonsense loaded in to take your mind of the paucity of the situation. This was directed by William Dear, who once made NORTHVILLE CEMETERY MASSACRE before lapsing into family-friendly fare for the rest of his Hollywood career. Watch out for Brion James in a typical thuggish role.

Truly Fun and Hilarious!
AnnieLola7 November 2019
I remember this as one of the finest pieces of filmed comedy I've ever seen. I recommend it to absolutely anyone who wants a good laugh. Great timing and casting throughout, and not black comedy, either-- just funny. And it's even on YouTube! Amazing Stories was a real treat while it lasted, and "Mummy Daddy" was one of its best.

The mummy is a Daddy.

Warning: Spoilers
This was the best of the Amazing stories. A wonderful play on horror meets reality come to life with rednecks, attempted hanging, turnarounds and of course a little romance. With our poor protagonist being threatened by and angry lynch mob and the real mummy himself. Hilariously played by an actor we never will see and deserves the recognition. I loved it, my children back then were young and they loved it. A wonderful time.

Not on par with other Amazing Stories.
matt87248 February 2008
Pretty much the silliest Amazing Stories episode out there. There were good things and bad things in this one (mostly bad things). The mummy costume was really great, I have to give it that. However, I had two problems with the episode. It lost me one minute in as far as humor. I can't say that I laughed at one joke. Also I can honestly say that this is the most ignorant representation of the South I've ever seen on film. It was insulting at every possible turn and used every stereotype it could muster. It seems that stereotyping in films is off limits unless it's against "rednecks" or the South in general. In the end, I just couldn't enjoy the episode because I was too put off by its stupidity.

"It was Ra Amin Ka, the Mummy!"
classicsoncall11 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Only the fourth episode to air for this series and it demonstrated that the producers weren't going for quality stories or serious acting. This is more slapstick than anything else, and relies a lot on red-neck, hillbilly humor to move it along, as an actor in a mummy get-up abruptly leaves the set to witness the birth of his first child. You can tell it's played for laughs, but because it's done so over the top, the humor is more forced than natural. I don't even want to get into the hick mentality of the deluded villagers who re-imagine an old native legend in their pursuit of the actor (Tom Harrison), who's real face is never revealed in the story. The whole thing is silly and wears out it's welcome early, even for it's short run time of twenty five minutes.
